Obama Broadly Describes Potential Running Mate

by: Michael Hurta

Mon Jul 28, 2008 at 00:00 PM CDT

Tom Brokaw, on Meet the Press, succeeded in pushing Barack Obama to elaborate just a bit on his Vice Presidential thinking:
I'm going to want somebody with integrity; I'm going to want somebody with independence, who's willing to tell me where he thinks or she thinks I'm wrong; and I'm, I'm going to want somebody who shares a vision of the country where we need to go, that we've got to fundamentally change not only our policies, but how our politics works, how business is done in Washington.

That got an interesting response out of NBC's political team at First Read, who asked, "Did he just rule out that he would pick a sitting Democratic US senator? Try and use that description Obama gave with Bayh, Biden, Clinton, or Reed? Now, try using it with Kaine, Sebelius, Nunn, or Hagel? Just sayin'... If Obama picks someone from the first group, he's going to have a tough time making the case that this person has shown a history of changing the way business is done in Washington. Frankly, it's tough naming any Washington player using that standard."

Among others, it quite possibly also rules out Texan Chet Edwards, who probably has gotten vetted anyways thanks to Nancy Pelosi.

But maybe the leader of the pack is now Governor Kaine.  Perhaps we weren't so slighted by Barack Obama's pick to send to our convention, after all?

At any rate, we'll probably know within the next week or two.  Until then, it's just stuff to think about.

Broad is the key word (3.00 / 1)
I think First Read may be reading too much into what Obama said.

I do not think Kaine would be a very good choice. His is short on experience, his tenure as governor has not been particular successful (especially compared to Warner) and he is a pro-life (though he is also anti-death penalty).

I don't have anything against him really, I just think we have a few other candidates who are head and shoulders above him.

Agreed (0.00 / 0)
I was unimpressed by Kaine's speech -- not to mention his staff and the rather lame "we're going to make threats" way they acted during that whole chaotic night.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

FYI, Mark Murrary of First Read is a Texas alum and often includes subtle references to UT and Austin in the morning updates.

I don't think (0.00 / 0)
that Obama's comment necessarily excludes Chet Edwards, at all.  I think Edwards would share Obama's "vision of the country where we need to go, that we've got to fundamentally change not only our policies, but how our politics works, how business is done in Washington".

It's NOT going to be (0.00 / 0)
Chet Edwards, for many and varied reasons. The one that comes to mind first is that almost no one in this country knows who he is. It's still gonna be Evan Bayh. Two terms as Senator and two terms as Governor of Indiana, where he is more popular than a loose meat sandwich. I know he's just this side of a conservative and he's as boring as watching paint dry. I'm not saying he would be my choice, but I think Barack is gonna pick him. Bayh is a second banana kind of guy. He's also a "safe" pick in many ways, and Barack has the disturbing habit of playing it safe when he's ahead. It's gonna be Bayh.

Obama/Bayh (0.00 / 0)
I don't know if it sounds that good.

Maybe it's better (0.00 / 0)
that nobody knows who he is.

Nah. We got dissed, Michael (0.00 / 0)
Even if Kaine winds up as the nominee, which today it's looking like.

Kaine in serious talks with Obama (0.00 / 0)
The Washington Post reports on the front page of their website that Gov. Kaine is in serious talks with the Obama campaign as the VP choice.  The piece also lists Evan Bayh and Joe Biden as other serious choices.

Word from the NY Times Michael Falcone is that Sen. Clinton is apparently on the list but is not a serious consideration. He states that she has not been asked to provide documentation for the vetting team.

One thing noted in the pieces about Kaine is his weak foreign policy and national security credentials. For a campaign to try to dispel any notions of inexperience in these areas that could be viewed as a liability for the ticket.

With only weeks to go before the convention we've got to be in the final rounds of selection. I expect we will have a VP named no later than two weeks before the convention.

Kaine has also (0.00 / 0)
only been governor for 2.5 years. The more I think about it, the more I really hope Obama does not pick Kaine.

I completely agree (0.00 / 0)
I'm still trying to figure out the appeal for this guy. I know he's an up and coming politician but for VP a this point?

So here's an alternative theory.  Maybe Kaine's the stealth candidate to throw us off the trail. Just a thought.

If Barack (5.00 / 1)
picks Kaine it's because he likes him personally. Remember these two go back a bit. Barack campaigned for Kaine when he was running for Gov. and Kaine was a very early supporter of Barack's presidential bid. I still say it's gonna be Bayh though. He's just got more experience and I think Barack wins Virginia without Kaine, but I'm not so sure about Indiana without Bayh.
