CD10: McCaul's McExploitation of American Children

by: MeanRachel

Mon Jul 28, 2008 at 02:23 AM CDT

(MUST READ! - promoted by Phillip Martin)

(crossposted at MeanRachel.com, the McCaul Retort, & DailyKos)

A politician using his office to exploit Americans' fears about homeland security, radical Islam, and foreign intelligence. Sound familiar? We're not talking about George W. Bush this time, but instead Republican Congressman Michael McCaul.  Since early July, McCaul has been misleading Americans about two young Pakistani-American boys who McCaul claimed were being "held in there against their will" at a international madrassa school, which McCaul says has Taliban ties in this FOX interview.

However, as CNN reported Sunday night, the media-hype surrounding McCaul's messianic quest to bring these children home is essentially just that: overblown hype about two children who were in fact not being held against their will and not being trained at a radical Islamic school at all.

Click here for the CNN video report on the McCaul expose.

After hearing about the two Atlanta children in a 2008 documentary called Karachi Kids, McCaul, who sees everything through red-threat-level colored glasses, immediately began exploiting homeland security fears in the name of the two children, as evidenced in this article from the Houston Chronicle on McCaul's website.  He refers to schools like the one the boys were at as "jihadist seminaries" and claims that they are "creating a new breed of terrorist." However, in his haste to  turn this into an election-year fist-bump, McCaul failed to check with his own State Department, the parents of the children or to do any sort of his own research to find out what the situation at the international school was.

As recently as Wednesday, the Austin American Statesman's Gardner Selby had a mention of the Pakistani-American boys being "released." When McCaul's spokesman Geoff Bailey found himself grasping for answers as to why McCaul was MIA on July 4th weekend in his own district, he used the two children as a political pawn in explaining how McCaul has shown "proven leadership."   Communications director Mike Rosen attempted to explain further:

Rosen said McCaul's personal request to Pakistan's president that the two boys be released "absolutely" prompted their freedom.

"He's very much responsible for those boys being home today," Rosen said.

It makes one wonder that since these children were not being held against their will to begin with, what exactly did McCaul do to catalyze their so-called freedom?  Additionally, also taking into account that these children were not being held against their will, what sort of government has the right to bring them back from another country?  It sounds as though they've lost more of their freedom in McCaul's hands being brought home -- collateral damage, and nothing more, in McCaul's exploitation of American children and misinformation to American citizens.

Reason #2,921 Not to vote for McCaul (5.00 / 1)
vote for Larry Joe in November and help turn Texas blue.

CD10: McCaul's McExploitation of American Children (0.00 / 0)
Come on, folks.  Congressman McCaul acted responsibly and did what any reasonable public official would do when he was asked to expedite the release of those two boys.  What would you do, leave the boys there?

And if you think Congressman McCaul spending July 4th with our troops in Afghanistan is truly MIA from the district, then this is an example of partisan politics at its worst.

well, except for the small details... (2.50 / 4)
...that apparently the boys weren't being held against their will, at a school the State Department says isn't a problem, in a situation in which McCaul didn't check with the parents of these American citizens to see if anybody needed rescuing or not. But other than that, everybody's got their stories straight. Given the choice between believing McCaul, or believing CNN, not exactly a close call there buddy. Good to know Congressman McCaul's staff keeps an eye on BOR though, keep it up!

what any reasonable Republican would do. . . (2.33 / 3)
grab onto the words "Islam", "Madrassa" and "Children" and pretty much just ad-lib the rest. I can't wait for LJD to sweep this guy out of office.

[ Parent ]
Acted responsibly, you say? (3.00 / 3)
The rpt he cited as indicating the madrassa had connections to the Taliban and Osama bin Ladin actually showed the opposite, and the State Dept describes this school as "moderate".

I would say his response wasn't even literate, much less responsible.

If these two young men had been sent to Catholic school in Italy, would McCaul have called them "future Mafiosi" as he called these two innocent young men "future terrorists"?

Before you win, you have to fight. Come fight along with us at TexasKaos.

The fact is... (3.00 / 1)
that Americans should be thankful that Congressman McCaul, with his expertise in counter-terrorism for the Justice Department, recognizes this evolving national security concern and is doing something about it.

It is documented that the Jamia Binoria SITE madrassa, where the two American boys were, has firm ties to the Taliban.  Both the Binoria SITE madrassa, where the children were held, and the Taliban, are of the Deobandi fundamentalist sect. The Taliban is known by the U.S. government as well as independent researchers to recruit from Deobandi madrassas including Binoria and train their recruits as terrorists.  It is documented that Deobandi leaders have provided personnel to the Taliban's fight against US forces in Afghanistan.  Any Americans who are among the Taliban recruits represent a potential threat to the United States because of their unfettered access to this country.

Anyone who understands this is disappointed in CNN's coverage of a legitimate national security concern.  Its report failed to state that it became illegal to enroll foreign students in Pakistani madrassas after it was discovered that British citizens of Pakistani decent who were educated in madrassas were among the suicide bombers who carried out the London Subway bombings in 2005.  And even though CNN has exclusive rights to Imran Raza's documentary, "Karachi Kids", the report failed to give an accurate portrayal of the changed mindset of several American students. It elected not to show footage of interviews conducted with the students in March 2008 in which they denounced America and said they were convinced that no Muslims contributed to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and that no Jews died in it.

Would love (3.00 / 1)
to see any sources you have backing up your arguments.

Feel free to post them in response to this comment.

i'd be a bit more relieved if McCaul were as concerned (0.00 / 0)
about the education kids are getting in his district as he apparently is about the one two kids were getting in Pakistan.
i'll tell ya, those kids seemed pretty determined to attack America on those skateboards.

 multiculturalism is SCARY!!

[ Parent ]
The Kids in McCaul's district (0.00 / 0)
You're concerned about the kids in McCaul's district? Really?
Because I live in McCaul's district (and think he's been an outstanding representative of our district).

We live here in Eanes ISD ... and I assure you, you're fears and concerns about the quality of education the children in "our district" are receiving is unfounded.

[ Parent ]
In Eanes? (5.00 / 1)
Really? Well, sure, Westlake -  that's a bellwether district.
You traveled the length of the 10th and talked to the teachers and parents from East Austin, Elgin, Burton, Brenham, Hempstead, etc?

I live in McCaul's district, and I think he's done a shitty job. He pays scant attention to his constituents, except for his 45 minute "meet and greets" that he does a couple of in the month before the election. He represents corporate money, massive government waste, and national security bed-wetters.   The people of the 10th District need someone who listens to them and looks out for them, and Mike McCaul ain't it.

[ Parent ]
'Nuff said (4.33 / 3)
From the US Census Bureau:

Number of kids living in poverty in McCaul's district: 34,979
Percentage of kids in McCaul's district living in poverty: 14.7%

I daresay that's 34,979 kids who don't have a choice. It's probably not a stretch to say that the majority of those kids don't have health care insurance. This Census Bureau Report says that in 2001 22.7% of all Texas kids didn't have health insurance.

So why do I bring this up? He's voted against childrens' health care 15 times. But he sure moved aggressively to save these two kids.

It all fits with McCaul's narrative that from undocumented immigrants, to Islamic Terrorists, to Narco Terrorists, to tax and spend Liberals, to (apparently) kids in Pakistani schools, it's a scary scary world, and he needs to protect us from it. Apparently, we want him on that wall. We NEED him on that wall. (But first, we need that wall...)

Never mind more immediate threats right here in our own communities. Our neighbors are loosing their homes. There's lead and phtalates in our kid's toys. We're getting sick from chicken and spinach and tomatoes and beef. The wages of our working class friends and family members and neighbors are stagnating. And they're scraping by without health insurance, and they can't afford to get sick. Their KIDS are without health insurance. They have to go to the local food bank just to make ends meet.

These are real problems affecting real people. McCaul doesn't have any plan for helping address those, because he doesn't believe they need to be addressed. His schtick is to convince us we've got to live in abject terror of those other people, and then propose solutions that he claims will mitigate our dread.

If Obama's slogan is "Change we can believe in," McCaul's must be "Terror you can be frightened of."

austin05: Lee Nichols from the Austin Chronicle here. You may want to actually watch the CNN report. It quoted the State Department has saying that the Binoria SITE madrassa is often mistaken for the Binoria Town madrassa. I'm guessing you've just made the same mistake. The State Dept. identifies the former as "moderate" and the latter as openly radical.

Too weird to be a Texan, too Texan to live anywhere else.

Are Austin05 and TruthSeeker the same person? (0.00 / 0)
I suspect the answer is either "yes" or "plagiarism."

Check out TruthSeeker's comment on Rachel's post on MikeMcCaul.com. Reads a lot like austin05's comment here.

Quick question: Is the congressman now, or has the congressman ever been a member of the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus?

Mike McCaul Saved Me from High School!!! (2.33 / 3)
I often dreamt of being rescued from the fundamentalist religious kooks who had ties with Jimmy Swaggart and indoctrinated me against my will in high-school.  It would have been awesome to be rescued and then later talk about my love of hot-wings on TV.  My US Representative could have swooped down any day from 1981-1985 and saved me from the spiritual and psychological hell of being forced to pray in tongues and wear synthetic polo shirts with the word Christian over the left breast.  Bethany Christian School is a lot closer than Pakistan, it's in the neighboring state of Louisiana. And another thing, it would have been perfectly acceptable if I were rescued by a Texas congressman while residing in Louisiana.  Even a Republican one would have been okay as long as I wasn't father-handled for too terribly long.  My mom would have shit herself when she turned on the 700 Club and heard about a US congressman "rescuing" her son from high-school!!!

This is great (3.00 / 1)
McCaul got owned and not one of his supporters have posted anything sourced.  This story is going to spread like wild-fire.  Wag The Dog II Staring "McCaul it like no one else sees it"

That director looks like Jeff Guckert/Gannon.

Here's Larry Joe Doherty's ActBlue page!

Question re McCaul campaign literature (3.00 / 2)
I received a piece of literature in mail from McCaul titled "Important Information on Energy Policy..." It states, "Public Document - Official Business... prepared published and mailed at taxpayer expense." It's supposedly just informational, but it's obviously meant as campaign literature. Does anyone know if this is legal?

Funny how they decide to send out a "public document" for the first time during a campaign - I've lived in his district for years and don't recall ever receiving any  "information" before. I also got a sophisticated robocall from him a few weeks ago - something tells me that might also have been funded at taxpayer expense.

Larry Joe Doherty...Hyping Polls... (1.00 / 1)

How far will hyping a poll get a candidate?

Below is the latest from the highly respected Stuart Rothenberg:
The Rothenberg Political Report - http://rothenbergpoliticalrepo...

"Larry Joe Doherty (D)is hyping a poll against Rep. Michael McCaul (R) in Texas' 10th, and some bloggers seem to be excited about Sharen Neuhardt (D) in Ohio's 7th. Neither even made the DCCC's emerging races, so how seriously should they be treated?

Talk of a 30-plus seat Democratic year is overblown. Even though many factors favor Democrats, the party would need to win solidly Republican districts to get that kind of gain, and that's a daunting challenge. Partisanship still matters a great deal.

In Texas' 10th, a Goodwin Simon Victoria Research polling memo for Doherty in late May argued that "Democrats have a real chance to take this district in November." The Doherty campaign is also crowing about a June survey conducted by IVR Polls, an automated polling firm with a very thin political track record.

The reality of the race is quite different. Doherty showed almost $260,000 in the bank at the end of June - not what he'd need to oust a mega-wealthy Republican in a solidly GOP district that gave George W. Bush 62 percent in 2004. If McCaul campaigns, he wins." (The Rothenberg Political Report)
