TX-6: Republican Congressman Joe Barton to Retire in 2010

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

Fri Jul 25, 2008 at 09:12 AM CDT

From the Ellis County Observer:

What started as one of those “off the record” conversations was confirmed by numerous Arlington-area Republican sources of mine who have kept talking about the 2010 retirement announcement (supposedly) by Congressman Joe Barton, R-Ennis.

I'd say this is credible, since the poster -- Joey Dauben -- was the last person to run against Barton in the primary.

TX-6 is in North Texas, and contains all of Ellis County, Navarro County, Freestone County, Leon County, Houston County, and a part of Limestone County, Trinity County, and Tarrant County. It runs on a "backslash-diagonal" angle from Arlington & Fort Worth in the Northwest to Trinity in the Southeast. (See district map here).

Talk about Barton's retirement -- and potential Democrats that could run -- in the comments.

So whether or not there is a strong Republican (or strong Democrat) to run for the seat, to me this is a sign that the Republicans and the NRCC might have another woeful time funding all of the races they'll have in 2010. The retirements are going to keep coming in waves, as Congressfolk decide to cash out while they getting is good, knowing they won't be in the majority again for a long time. (Knock wood.)

It's sad that so many Republicans are retiring for person profit rather than continuing their call to serve their constituents. But, at least it's a potential pick-up, which can only help those same constituents!

Wish he would have retired this season.  He's been one of the biggest obstacles to a national policy on green energy jobs.

There were rumors that Barton was going to retire before this cycle, so it's no real suprise that there are rumors about him retiring in 2010.  Of course, the big name thinking about running for this seat is P.  I doubt there are any top tier Democrats interested in this race.  Paula Pierson and Chris Turner would be great candidates, but they seem more interested in state government for now.  Even if they were interested in congress, then my guess is that they would probably wait to see if 2012 redistricting would make this district more Democratic friendly.

George P. Bush, but he just said he was moving to Austin.

I missed that P was moving to Austin.  And, yes that's who I meant.
