DCCC Reserves Ad Time for Lamspon, Rodriguez

by: David Mauro

Fri Jul 11, 2008 at 04:16 PM CDT

The DCCC has reserved $35 million in 31 congressional districts nationwide. While $22.5 million of the $35 million is allocated to seats currently held by Republicans, the only Texas seats in the buy are held by incumbent Democrats Nick Lampson and Ciro Rodriguez.

The buy in Lampson's district is one of five nationwide that is over $1 million, which could be a product of the expensive Houston media market as much as anything else.

Ciro Rodriguez will have $707,000 worth of ads in his district.

Ideally, I would have liked to see the DCCC make buys to support both Larry Joe Doherty and Michael Skelly. The reality is that, at this point, the high costs of running ads in the Houston area (coupled with the fact that Doherty's district spans both the Austin and Houston media markets) means the DCCC may continue to focus only on Lampson and Rodriguez.

The quickest way to change that, however, and to show the DCCC that both Doherty and Skelly are extremely viable candidates is to contribute to them.

It was Skelly's stellar fundraising numbers that allowed him to make the DCCC's Red to Blue List, as KT reported last month.

Support Larry Joe Doherty and Michael Skelly today.

Rodriguez has been too mush of a DOG Democratic to be very excited about. Still he does have the D and will attract many latinos.

what?? (0.00 / 0)
I'm not sure what
too mush of a DOG Democratic
means, but it sounds bad.

Ciro Rodriguez has become one of the hardest working members of Congress over the last 2 years and has put the interests of his district over his personal political views.

Long before it was popular, Ciro railed against the war in Iraq and fought for veterans rights and benefits.

He is a progressive with a capital P.

The only thing more confusing than your first sentence was your second

Still he does have the D and will attract many latinos.
.

There ain't exactly a wide diversity of folks in Texas 23.  Virtually everyone is Hispanic. But as this district has proven time and time again, they don't knee-jerk vote for anyone. You have to battle for their votes regardless of ethnicity.

Ciro won in 06 because he built a coalition of voters from across the district.  That is how and why he'll get re-elected.  This DCCC investment is appropriate and a strong sign that Pelosi is focused on helping Texas win tough races.

Ciro has a good voting record that we can be proud of.

And we know him by the enemies he has made. Tom DeLay's gang gerrymandered him out of office back in 2003. He was the only Hispanic targeted because they wanted to get rid of a progressive leader, a former head of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, one who voted against the Authorization for the Use of Military Force in Iraq, etc.

If the Repubs (using their fellow traveller Henry Cuellar) had not broken Ciro's seniority, by now he would be a high ranking member on the Veterans Affairs Committee and chairing a subcommittee. But he's making a comeback now, and he's going to be around a long time.
