Jeff Fleece on Life

by: j

Thu Apr 06, 2006 at 11:47 AM CDT

(Fleece is in the Republican runoff in HD-50 against Don Zimmerman for the chance to go up against Rep. Mark Strama in November. - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

From the Texas Alliance for Life's "Voter Guide":

"The candidates were asked whether they supported, opposed, or were undecided on the following:"

Jeff Fleece supports "[t]he reversal of the U.S. Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision, which allows abortion for any reason, even as a method of birth control, and even in the late stages of pregnancy."

Translation: If you are a woman, Fleece believes that the Texas State Legislature, not you, should be the final arbiter on what happens to your body.

Jeff Fleece supports "[a] law banning partial-birth abortions, except to prevent the death of the mother."

Translation: If you are pregnant and unless you are going to die, you will be compelled to give birth, even if your health will be irreparably damaged.

Jeff Fleece opposes "[t]he use of public funds for abortions and abortion referrals, except to prevent the death of the mother."

Translation: If you are poor and you get pregnant, Fleece supports denying you access to the same procedures and information that well off women can purchase. He would rather you stay in poverty, and that your child be brought up in poverty, rather than allowing you a choice and a chance at a better life. Unless, of course, you're going to die.

Jeff Fleece supports "[a] law requiring an abortion provider to obtain the consent of the parents of a minor child before performing an abortion on their daughter."

Translation: If you're a girl younger than 18, and you have been sexually or physically abused by a parent, Fleece wants to require you to ask your abusive parent for permission to terminate a pregnancy.

Jeff Fleece supports "[a] law creating criminal and civil penalties for a third party who injures or kills an unborn child in the womb against the wishes of the mother, such as in cases of assault, drunk driving, or negligence."

Translation: Fleece wants to ensure that the unborn have more rights than you.

Jeff Fleece supports "[l]aws banning assisted suicide."

Translation: Fleece wants to ensure that should you face a lingering illness, grave discomfort and unimaginable pain in the final stages of your life, you can't seek the comfort of a death with dignity, nor can you shield your family's assets from health care providers which are forced to keep you alive.

Jeff Fleece supports "[h]onoring the wishes of patients who want life-saving treatment (including food and water) regard less of their degree of disability, age, and 'quality of life'."

Translation: Fleece believes that your physical remains should be kept alive as long as possible, even if you are in a persistent vegetative state, and even if costs to keep your body "alive" are bankrupting your family.

Jeff Fleece opposes "[l]aws that would limit the free speech rights of civic groups to report on public policy issues prior to an election."

Translation: If you are a candidate, Fleece supports groups allied with him to produce and air sham issue ads attacking you, even (or perhaps especially) in the final days before an election.

Jeff Fleece opposes "[r]esearch that involves the destruction of human embryos, including research on embryonic stem cells."

Translation: Fleece would rather your unused blastocysts, which can only be defined as "human" if you count their potential, be destroyed, rather than allowing them to be used to further medical research that might lead to a cure for a family member who might suffering from any number of debilitating and painful illnesses, such as paralysis, Parkinson's or Alzheimer's.

Jeff Fleece supports "[a] ban on human cloning, i.e., creating a human embryo by any method other than fertilization."

Translation: If you are a couple unable to have children, and traditional methods have failed, Fleece wants to ban technologies based on cloning that would help you have your own children.

Final thought: If you are not yet born, Fleece believes in the sanctity of your life. And if you are dying, Fleece believes in the sanctity of your life. But if you are somewhere between the womb and the tomb, he apparently doesn't believe at all in the sanctity of your life.

(Don Zimmerman didn't respond to the organization's questionnaire. Perhaps this is to his credit).

Roe v. Wade (0.00 / 0)
Wait, where does Roe v. Wade say that an abortion is allowed for any reason, even in the late stages of pregnancy?  Isn't one of the usual criticisms of Roe that it created the odd trimester line-drawing/balancing test?

Why am I even bothering to point this out?  People such as Mr. Fleece are clearly untroubled by the facts.

"In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican." - H.L. Mencken

Great post! (0.00 / 0)
Fleece is way out in right field.

Jeff Fleece: M.I.A./Mark Strama: "I've got to be someone's bitch." (0.00 / 0)
Jeff Fleece DID NOT VOTE in the same primary he is now asking voters to help him in, nor did he vote in the 2002 runoff election for the office he now seeks. Jeff Fleece was M.I.A.

While Don Zimmerman organized, led and partially financed the fight to make sure taxpayer dollars were being spent responsibly, Jeff Fleece couldn't even be bothered to vote in the March 2005 RRISD bond election, which had by far the largest turnout ever in a RRISD bond election. Jeff Fleece was M.I.A.

Don Zimmerman, an independent maverick, has been active with People for Efficent Transportation for nearly 2 years in the fight against tolling roads we've already paid for. Zimmerman filled out the comprehensive double tax toll Questionnaire from People for Efficient Transportation with flying colors.

Jeff Fleece failed to fill out or return his questionnaire. Jeff Fleece is M.I.A.

The reason Fleece has been so mysterious for many of the issues in the race (and MIA) is - he's is a puppet for the establishment. He'll vote the way they tell him to when the time comes. He'll vote for the establishments new hidden taxes - like tolls on roads we've already paid for - when they tell him to.

MARK STRAMA...

As a candidate two years ago, Mark Strama promised to vote against all freeway toll legislation.

Then, Mark Strama turn his back on his promises and voted with Mike "Toll Road King" Krusee every time on freeway tolling legislation in the last session. Every Time.

MARK STRAMA LIED AGAIN and voted to toll roads we've already paid for as a member of CAMPO in 2005!

After one of the CAMPO meetings last year, Mark Strama told myself and Matt Turner (who I had just met) that he voted with House Transportation Chair Mike Krusee on the freeway toll bills because "I'm a Democrat in a Republican house. It's kind of like being in prison and I've got to be someone's bitch."

Strama is fighting the good fight (5.00 / 1)
Strama has an uphill challenge, but he's fighting the good fight.  He is exactly correct that he is a Democrat in a Republican district in a Republican majority legislature.  You simply can't have a perfect Elliot Naishtat-type voting record in conservative districts like Northeast Travis County.

Instead of criticizing Strama and other swing district Democrats for working on a bi-partisan basis, we should focus our energies on electing more Democrats so that we re-take the majority and thus re-focus the agenda.  If Democrats have the majority, then Strama and other swing district Democrats will have more freedom to push the envelope.

No one likes toll roads.  No one.  But because we have a Republican majority that refuses to invest in our highway infrastructure, toll roads temporarily became the only viable option to solve our gridlock crisis.

Think long term.  We should focus our efforts on electing more Democrats who will vote to invest more money in Texas -- thus making toll roads unnecessary in the future.  It's that simple.

Sal, just out of curiosity... (0.00 / 0)
What would you propose we do about roads in central Texas. Feel free to pick one:

1. Nothing. (Which will increase the "time tax," "gas consumption tax" and "pollution tax" for central Texans)

2. Increase central Texas gas taxes

3. Invest in sensible mass transit

4. Toll lanes

5. Convince the GOP leadership to spend more on the central Texas transportation infrastructure (aka: getting blood from a turnip.)

Please, pick one.
