What To Do With the Other Clinton

by: RBearSAT

Today Ben Smith of politico.com is reporting on an issue the Obama camp is facing, what to do about Bill. Now that we've moved into the general election cycle Obama is trying to line up the surrogates that will help him carry his message. Does that include Bill?

Remember, even Hillary had a hard time reigning him in during the primary election cycle. In many cases he just was downright nasty at times. Part of it is that Bill keeps wanting to fall back on his legacy as if it is a foundation for the way to run a country.

While I enjoy and like Bill Clinton and what he stands for I'm ready for a new benchmark for government that Obama seems to bring. I'm a member of the Clinton Foundation and really like their focus on AIDS and other issues in the world. Bill is my image of a great former president. But that's about as far as it goes.

So what do you do? You want the Clintons in your camp.  But there's more bad blood between Obama and Bill than Obama and Hillary. Remember Bill called Obama a "fairy tale" along with other things. Obama never really shot back which I was very glad of.

However Bill carries a lot of great star power in Texas, especially south Texas. He could draw many more than even Hillary to an event down here.

Personally I would almost wish Bill had some critical issues abroad to deal with. Then you would never have to "handle" him which can be a real challenge.

Send him on a prolonged campaign tour... (5.00 / 2)
...in West Virginia, too. Let's see if he can work his magic there and in those places where "African American" still means "them people" in the minds of the electorate. If Bill can open Democrackers' eyes, he'll prove he's still got a little of the old Hope Magic left in him.

But, whatever.

Why are you (0.00 / 0)
quoting politico.com as if it's a good source for unbiased reporting? Definite GOP slant, sir.

Oh, and setting up the whole critique of Bill Clinton by saying you are a member of the Clinton Foundation? Please.

This is called a concern diary. Once again, I'm not buying what you're trying so hard to sell.

I support Bill as an ex-president (0.00 / 0)
My statement about the Clinton Foundation was meant to demonstrate my support for his work as an ex-president. Dang, you try to read so much into a statement. When's the last time you actually followed or supported the work of the Carter Center or the Clinton Foundation?

Ex-presisdents can be great leaders long after they leave office. Bill and Jimmy have done great work on the international fronts and I applaud them.  I haven't seen the same for the Republican exes.  Granted Pres. Reagan was unable to due to Alzheimer's. I really don't expect to see anything like that from the current. In fact I'll be amazed if he ever gets off the ranch in Crawford.

Concern is that Bill as a surrogate is not the best thing to have as evidenced by Hillary's campaign. That story in politico.com was actually covered by a lot of news sources. It's a genuine concern these days. Bill has a temper (very well known fact) and it's kind of hard to control an ex-pres these days with fast media. Hillary is at least a little more reserved in her comments.

Bill's one line statement pretty much shows his position on this matter. He's not interested. Yes he can probably be coaxed into a surrogate support role but I think he's going to take offense at the control the campaign might impose on him.

Surrogate support role? (0.00 / 0)
Yes he can probably be coaxed into a surrogate support role but I think he's going to take offense at the control the campaign might impose on him.

If you call an ex-President a surrogate or say that they are functioning in a support role, well then, any president would be "offended."

It's all in the presentation. Certainly, the way you have presented it will not work.

Anybody but the principal is a surrogate (5.00 / 1)
I hate to correct you on this but anyone who is representing the candidate is a surrogate. They are not the principal and can only act in support of the principal. So to be precise and accurate an ex-President IS a surrogate. I don't care what their over-inflated ego might be they are not the principal.

I never said anything (0.00 / 0)
about being the "principal." Seems this word "surrogate" is everywhere lately. I guess it's an outgrowth of so many people speaking for candidates. But it has a really odd sound to it.

And don't "hate to correct me on this," because I really don't think you are correcting me on anything I actually stated.

I think Bill'd be great in Texas too. (0.00 / 0)
I say we set Hillary, Bill, Chelsea and hell even socks the cat out on an electoral "vision quest" - not to return until Obama's won in November. Furthermore, both Bill and Hillary would be excellent for use in defending Obama against GOP smears, they can kick the shit out of those Republican talking points allowing Barack to remain above the fray.
AND, Chelsea can still bring in a hell of a lot of younger voters who by some phenomenon didn't go Obama, as well as Hispanic voters. She's quite a charismatic one that Chelsea.
I'm not so much worried about "muzzling" Bill, I was always sort of puzzled and saddened by that line of thinking. The few gaffs he made during the primary were i think, specific to the dynamics of this primary - and don't represent a larger trend on the campaign trail.
I understand that the Clintons need time to rest and recoup from the primary, I'm just curious how much time. We need them to work literally non-stop for Barack through Fall in order to implement the 50 state strategy in places like Texas and WV, hell even in Ohio.
There is a bit of a lull right now so there's time, but after the convention, no more time. They'll either make good on their word or they won't. That'll define the Clinton legacy at this point, how hard they work for Barack.
