TX Sen: Noriega Only Down 2 to Cornyn in Latest U.S. Senate Poll

After the back and forth of Rasmussen polls, finally a poll I trust has some interesting news.

According to the Texas Lyceum, a statewide, non-partisan leadership group, the U.S.  Senate race is very tight. The poll shows Junior Senator John Cornyn at 38%, Lt. Col and State Representative Rick Noriega at 36%, and undecided at 24%. The biggest surprise is only 23% of Texans feel the country is on the right track.

The Texas Lyceum is a  live interview poll to over 1,000 voters with a margin of error of 4.5%

The breakdowns within the poll are particularly interesting.

The respondents come from a variety of places, 42% suburban, 28% urban, and 27% rural. Most - 59% - are married, and 43% have one or more college degrees. Most - 54% - identify themselves as White; 32% as Hispanic; and 11% as African-American. The party splits are 32% Republican and 44% Democrat - but the ideological splits go the other way, with 42% calling themselves conservative, 34% saying they are moderate, and 19% identifying themselves as liberals.

According to the Noriega press release, the U.S. Senate race is drawing national attention as more and more polling data indicate a close race and another potential win for the Democrats. The Noriega campaign was recently bolstered by news that the Obama campaign plans to send resources and staff to Texas and high profile national figures including General Wesley Clark, Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) and Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) are aiding in campaign fundraising efforts. Noriega has become a popular figure on the internet, soaring to the position of one of the top recipients on the Democratic fundraising site ActBlue.com.

This is an incredible poll and definitely good news going into the June 30 fundraising deadline.

You can read the full poll results here (be careful it is a pdf) and donate to the Noriega campaign here.

Barack Poll Numbers (0.00 / 0)
The poll also shows McCain leading Obama by 43 percent to 38 percent with 17 percent undecided. Given the margin of error, it is nearly a dead heat. Is there a chance that Texas is in play in the presidential election? I sure hope so.

And Rick is the Boxer PAC winner! (0.00 / 0)
Haven't seen this posted yet:

Leaners? (0.00 / 0)
With that many undecided, it's pretty obvious that they didn't push the leaners.  It would be nice see how it would have turned out had they done so.

This is exciting (0.00 / 0)
I hope this is the tipping point in Texas. I'm going to love seeing Webb, Clark and Tester in Texas campaigning for Obama and Rick.

Yes we can!

Clark will be in Dallas July 16 (0.00 / 0)
for a Noriega fundraiser.

We Can ALL Help. (0.00 / 0)
We can all help keep pushing those numbers in our direction -- through voter registration. Here in Austin, we go out FOUR times a week. I am sure everyone can give up at least one Saturday morning, afternoon, or Wednesday afternoon or evening, one time this summer. We need more hands on deck -- the more volunteers we have, the more ground we cover, the more voters we make.

Here's more information. Come join us!

Senator Boxer's contest (0.00 / 0)

Senator Boxer has heard the name Noriega before, at her appearance at the McFarlin Auditorium at SMU with Senator Durbin.

When the people fully digest the issues - - and use the election to confront the costs of the Phil & Wendy Gramm ENRON mentality, Noriega will win along with the other Democrats.

Yes - there is work to do to make this happen.

32% Republican, 44% Democrat (0.00 / 0)
The sample included 32% Republican and 44% Democrat -- and Cornyn and McCain are still ahead?  The accepted breakdown is an 8-point advantage for GOP, not a 12-point deficit.  This is an unusual poll, to say the least.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

A couple of us at Campaign Academy read the whole poll ... (0.00 / 0)
And Matt Angle showed us a few others with similarly incredible implications for Texas Dems. It almost feels too good to be true ... I for one feel pretty lucky to be taking part in Texas politics this cycle (even if I have to periodically pinch myself to make sure I'm not dreaming these numbers).
