Capital Metro Offering Free 7-Day Passes; Ridership Up

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

First of all, I just noticed that Capital Metro (Austin's metropolitan transportation system for the uninformed) has launched a blog. Check out the Capital MetroBlog here.

Anyways, tomorrow Capital Metro is taking part in Dump the Pump Day and offering free 7-day bus passes as part of a "Xtreme Transit Makeovers" from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at 100 Congress Ave.

Daily Texan: The event's officials hope to convince potential riders who may be apprehensive about riding the bus to try a route free of charge, McKewen said. Capital Metro representatives at the event will help commuters by offering personalized route plans. Participants will also receive help in calculating how much they are decreasing the wear and tear of roads by riding buses.

Participants will receive a free seven-day pass on any shuttle. University students can always ride the bus free of charge with a UT student ID.

I also though this line was interesting from the article, indicative of the face that people are actually changing their habits based upon fuel prices.

From January through April, there was a 12.5 percent increase in shuttle ridership compared to the same period last year. Capital Metro spokeswoman Erica McKewen said she expects an even greater increase in May.

Of course, I've held out for about 7 years in never getting a car- much to the chagrin of some of my employers who may browbeat me yet into getting one. I'm so counterculture. (But I also like getting a paycheck.) **sigh**

Maybe... (0.00 / 0)
If CapMetro would have a BUS out to my apartment, I'd use it. If I can't walk to the bus (as the CapMetro website says there are no stops near my apartment), then I can't take advantage of the 7-day bus pass. I feel disenfranchised as a bus rider... sigh

They were reporting (0.00 / 0)
last night that ridership (is that a word?) is WAY up over the last month, but indicated that it has more to do with people trying to get off of the streets, out of the 100-degree weather, and onto a rolling air conditioner than it has to do with fuel prices.

Thanks for this post.  I've been contemplating taking the bus, but couldn't talk myself into it.  A free week MIGHT be enough to get me to try it.

I have no car either! (0.00 / 0)
Stay strong, KT! :-)

Because I don't pay monthly car expenses, folks, I can live in central Austin and have access to many good bus routes. Seems like a fair trade to me.

Busses are great (0.00 / 0)
I have one that goes 3 blocks from my apartment and downtown to half a mile from where my parents live in south Austin (easy biking distance).  Very useful because I don't have a car.

Through a combination of biking/riding the bus you can get many places in Austin.  Walking is a bit more difficult depending on where you live.  It's kind of a catch-22 sometimes.  Have to get the ridership up before they can justify creating more routes and running buses more frequently, and have to have more routes/run buses more frequently to get more riders.

Why ban commuter bikes? (0.00 / 0)
I was thinking of buying one of those commuter bikes that are popular in Europe.  You can ride to the bus / train stop fold your bike to the size of a briefcase and you're off.  I was stunned to learn that CapMetro (officially at least) bans folders of any size on the bus.  They don't fit in the (usually full anyway) bike racks on the front of the bus.  Someone please explain why you can take any amount of luggage (I've done it I ride the Flyer to the airport) but you cannot take a tiny collapsible bike.
