The 2009 Race for Austin's Mayor May Now Begin

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Mon Jun 16, 2008 at 09:00 AM CDT

For current coverage of the 2009 Austin Mayor's Race, click here.

This weekend's runoff election for Austin City Council Place 4 closes the last chapter in this springs endless series of elections. Of course, the most inside City Hall observers will also note that it means that it's the start of a new election- that for the spot of Austin Mayor in May of 2009.

Now, this post isn't meant to start debating and discussing the potential candidate and their merit (though you're more than happy to engage in that speculation and talk in the comments!). The reason I wanted to write this post is to simply lay out my thoughts on what will guide my own thinking about this race since I get asked about it a lot.

This is an open mayoral seat, a chance for Austin voters to step up, engage the candidates, and pick someone to lead their city that expresses what they want to see in their city. It's a free for all, and a chance to really select a Mayor in a different way than we select our council members. There is something that draws in and engages an expanded set of voters in selecting a Mayor, and it's an opportunity to have a much different conversation about who we are as a city and where we want to go.

Austin is a unique place- with energy, with youth, with growth, with different ideas of what it's future should be. Our mayor should be someone who reflects that. A mayor with character. Just like Austin.

I recognize there are prospective candidates from the current council, as many as three. But this race should be much more than a simplistic insiders debate over "Brewster or Lee" which I find rather small-picture and for the most part, unexciting.

Some of the prospective candidates might be former councilmembers, which is a step in the right direction in that you get some institutional knowledge from folks who've stepped away from the game for a while. Bill Spelman comes to mind among others.

We should honestly be looking for possible candidates from outside the typical council world. For the open seat in 2009, why limit ourselves to the known?

All said- this our chance to elect a new mayor without it being under a cloud of scandal, without particular local issues driving the race, or without certain ballot questions taking priority. Who knows, that could all change in a year, but for 2009, my personal feelings about the race for mayor are ones based upon thinking beyond the insider narratives of today.

Bear in mind (0.00 / 0)
We have a weak mayor system of government here - the mayor has effectively no more power than any other city council member when it comes down to brass tacks (they have a little more influence, especially with outside entities, of course).

This makes every single council seat a critical issue - especially when some councilmembers in the past made irresponsible promises (like Griffith's promising to never vote against a valid neighborhood ptentition even though such an event already automatically set off a supermajority requirement).

Who do you think should be considered? (0.00 / 0)
I like Bill Spelman, Jackie Goodman, and DeWayne Lofton as possible choices for Mayor. I would hope Robin Cravey would run for an open seat next spring if one becomes open.

If I had to chose between Lee and Brewster, I would go with Leffingwell or run for Mayor myself as a protest,  campaigning in South Austin only. I know I could cut into Jennifer Gale's base vote and do some damage to McCracken.

been there, done that... (0.00 / 0)
Protest candidacies are a lot of fun...ONCE.  Just be sure to get your spouse's permission beforehand. :)

And as much as I like DeWayne, I'd like to see him on Council first, before running for Mayor.

Drive Participation in Local Races....early eye on Bill Spelman (0.00 / 0)

Thanks KT for introducing this critical topic early in the cycle.  Unfortunately, we've not seen a great turn-out in local elections.  Hopefully we can help drive more participation in local elections.
It's early, and Lee and Brewster are both assets to this great city, but I'm keeping my eye on Bill Spelman.  Also, Jackie Goodman, former councilperson is running and could be another player in the mix.

Best,

I'm surely mischaracterizing your words... (0.00 / 0)
but I really hope the Mayoral race is driven by particular local issues and certain ballot questions rather than who can generate the warmest fuzzy in the legs of voters who have never voted in local elections and have no idea what city government does. :)

For me, it comes down to:

POLICY

1) How should we manage growth?  (Is 3% per annum growth inevitable or the result of city policy?  How can we direct our growth to minimize negative externalities?)
2) How do we protect the aquifer? (and other aspects of the environment)
3) How do we preserve affordability?

The more specific and rooted in historic reality the answers are, the better.  Can the rhetoric, please, just raw substance.

CREDIBILITY

1) How have you demonstrated your commitment to the above policies in your previous work in the public or private sectors?
2) How successful have you been in accomplishing the above policies in your previous work in the public or private sector?

General thoughts: Next year's campaign has the potential to be one of the most heated on record, given the quantity and quality of those rumored to run.

Add Transportation and Public Safety (0.00 / 0)
Mobility and crime prevention/response added to your list would complete it. The question then becomes, what are the candidates postions on the five core policy issues, their priorities, and how they propose to fund it.
