Rep. Burnam Asks for Impartial Investigation

by: Matt Glazer

Sat May 17, 2008 at 02:00 PM CDT

When we first wrote about the ghost worker attack Craddick launched on House members, we knew it was a story that would only serve to hurt Craddick and his allies.

It appears Craddick's miscalculation has hurt one of his top Lieutenants, Tony Goolsby, and now Rep. Lon Burnam wants to make sure Terry Keel is earning his $140,000 pay check.

In a letter to Chairman Larry Philips, Rep. Lon Burnam requested a full, impartial investigation of the entire house, including, Speaker Craddick, his employees, his Chairpersons, and his allies.  In the hopes that the entire House is help to the same standards.

The letter points to Keel as the biggest example.

As you know, the House Parliamentarian, Terry Keel, is a "permanent full-time" employee of the Texas House earning nearly $140,000 a year.  If Speaker Craddick is going to use taxpayer dollars to investigate three of his foes for employees earning a few hundred dollars a month, the importance of ensuring taxpayers that a $140,000 a year employee-- a substantially higher cost to the state-- is actually dedicating 40 hours per week tot the Texas House over and above his own criminal defense firm cannot be overstate.

Additionally, I would greatly appreciate assurance that whatever system Speaker Craddick currently uses to track work time of his employees, including those with outside employment and those running for elected office, will be included in your investigation.

As always, you can read the full letter here.

We are also going to help Chairman Phillips if we can.  While the Chairman is looking into these allegations, please feel free to send us any pictures you have of Terry Keel or any Craddick staffer not doing their job during the hours of 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. (typical work hours).

Pictures can be sent to me directly at Matt@BurntOrangeReport.com and I will notarize and send certified copies of them all to the Chairman and any other appropriate sources.  The best picture will win either an iTunes gift card or a box of Tiff's Treats too!

I love Lon Burnam (0.00 / 0)
Enough said!

Be careful what you ask for (0.00 / 0)
First off, I am not familiar with this "Rep. Lon Burnam" character.  So I did a search of legislation passed during the past several terms, but didn't come up with anything.  If this fellow is receiving a state salary and/or benefits, he should be investigated as a "ghost representative."

Second, do you really think you guys should be extending this storyline?  Everyone knows that there are other "ghost employees" (employees making less than $600 per month but classified as "full time" in order to receive full benefits) in the House.  There are probably almost 20 more Dem ghosts that haven't been reported on yet, even tho the media has done the research and know exactly who they are.  Dunnam may like this continuing storyline because it makes it look like "everyone does it" , so it diverts attention from his own hire of former members.  But trust me, a lot of your other Dem reps don't want this storyline pushed anymore, because they don't want to get reported on just to help Dunnam out.  Ask them.  I don't think you really want to keep starting blog chains where folks can start identifying more Dem ghosts.  I'm thinking of an office that starts with a G....

Third, let's make this photo contest more interesting.  How about some prizes:

$100     Picture of former member Zeb Zebranek doing "constituent service" for Eiland

$500     Picture of former member Miguel Wise providing "on-call legal advice" to Dunnam

You sound reasonable....be careful around here. (0.00 / 0)

Thanks for Joining (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for being the newest member of the community here.

We appreciate your involvement, but threats are pretty petty and transparent.  Second, are you saying that a $140,000 ghost employee is equal to someone getting paid $500 a month to ensure they have health coverage?

Finally, Democrats didn't start this debate, Tom Craddick did.  You upset that this story continues? Maybe you should talk to your buddies in Craddick's office for pushing it.

If you want to leave our writers your e-mail and start your own contest, have fun.  In the mean time, I will pay for pictures of Terry Keel out of my own pocket.

In the mean time, thanks for joining our community and maybe you should focus your misplaced rage at Craddick's office  where friends and enemies are treated the same way.

Beware (0.00 / 0)
TK can be like a cornered bear if you box him in. Better have a political head shot planned if pushing this deal.

On that first point (3.00 / 1)
No, Burnam hasn't gotten any bills passed the last three sessions. He used to get them passed, but he didn't even get a bill to the floor during any of those three sessions--except for two bills that came up for a vote last session.

But do you know why? In 2003, he was the only representative to vote against Tom Craddick for speaker. Craddick controls the committees, including the Calendars Committee. Given the way Tom Craddick runs things, why do you think Burnam's bills don't get far?

Burnam does his job by serving on committees, voting his conscience, and working to stop bills that are just plain bad ideas. It's really all you can do when the speaker has a vendetta against you.

Anyway, glad to see that you did some of your homework, but you should have looked a little closer.
