Obama Voter Registration in Austin

( - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

Yesterday was a great day for Barack Obama, and an even better day for the hundreds and thousands of new voters registered today across the United States. Here in Austin we ran a voter registration drive that crossed the city, looking to make as many new Democrats as possible. We ended up with several hundred new voters, and dozens of new deputy registrars.

We'll be at it again next weekend, Saturday May 17 at 1:00 p.m. starting from Nuevo Leon, 1501 East 6th Street, concurrent with the launch of the Travis County Coordinated Campaign.

Here's some photos from our event. Enjoy!

The biggest problem we faced? Most people are already registered! But we did our best to make new voters, especially those who just turned 18 and felons who have served their probation or parole and are eligible to vote again. Ex-Felon voting needs to be a big deal this fall. There are too many citizens in Texas who have completed their probation or parole and are unaware of their right to vote.

Preparation started Friday as volunteers assembled voter registration packets at the Obama office. Each volunteer received a clipboard, pen, voter forms, a map to their location, and some information about the event.

Volunteers came from across Central Texas to help out. We gathered at the historic Victory Grill to be trained. Local Obama supporters, City Council Member Mike Martinez and State Rep. Mark Strama, came by to fire up the crowd and remind us of the importance of our work.

Everyone's favorite local law enforcement officer, Bruce Elfant, stopped by to deputize all of the new registrars. Ramey Ko, head of Asian Americans for Barack Obama, helped explain how to register voters. He is clearly a frenzy of activity.

After a few role-playing scenarios to help volunteers feel more comfortable, folks headed out to get their packets. We had a really diverse crowd, and covered a LOT of ground in Austin.

After our teams were dispatched, I headed back over to Congress Ave., where the Obama HQ is. We registered voters on the street all afternoon. The folks on the right are first-time voters, both 19 years old. They don't know who they're voting for yet, but at least they have the ability to do so now.

All afternoon, folks came back with their completed forms. Mary, on the left, had success at a supermarket and a busy bus stop. The couple in the middle had success at a Walmart in South Austin. Carol, on the right, brought in the second-most forms from a really busy grocery store.

All in all, it was a great day. We registered senior citizens and folks who will be 18 in the next two months. We registered recently-cleared felons who have completed their parole, and newly sworn-in citizens of the United States. Best of all, we met hundreds upon hundreds of folks who have already voted for Barack Obama here in Texas, and are ready to do so again in November!

So. Polls may show that Obama trails McCain by 5 points in the Lone Star State. Well, I can promise you this -- Saturday, that margin got a little bit narrower.

You guys had it covered! (0.00 / 0)
The company I work for adopted a garden on Town Lake by I-35 and we were all cleaning it up yesterday morning.  A guy rolled by on his bike and asked if we were all registered to vote.  They of course were, since I started bothering them all back in January.

Great Job!!! (0.00 / 0)
Sorry I missed it but had some family things come up Saturday morning and could not make it.  I will be there on the 17th.

Thank you to the event organizers (5.00 / 2)
Over 100 volunteers!  Incredible!

Congrats to Katherine, Ramey and everyone else who worked so hard to organize the successful event.  If we're going to turn Texas blue, we need to expand the overall number of voters.  It's very inspiring to see so many volunteers this early in the campaign who are willing to give up their Saturday to register voters.

And so many of them (5.00 / 1)
first-time registrars! Voter registration will make the difference for us this November. We all need to commit to registering at least 10 new Democrats before the election.

It's great to see how many new people have been inspired to volunteer for the Obama campaign. All day on Congress Avenue, people kept coming up and asking how to get involved. They were all told about the kick-off of the coordinated campaign. It will be great to have so many fine people helping ALL Democrats get elected.

Just another example of how Barack Obama is growing the Democratic Party!

Yes it was a great event (4.00 / 4)
Very well organized and very friendly.  You get to work in teams if you have never done this before so that helps build your confidence too.

It's hard work sometimes, but very rewarding.  My team partner was a 19 year old who got deputized at the county convention in March.  I think he felt it was very important work and he'll be back too.

My story of the day was the ex-felon we helped register.  He's been off paper for over 10 years and he didn't know he had his rights restored.  He was so excited that he called a buddy who was in the same predicament.  Unlock the vote!

Some of you may remember that we passed a very good bill HB770 this pass legislative session, that would have required TDCJ to notify people as they were released from incarceration, that their voting rights were restored and provide them a registration card.  Petty Perry vetoed the bill.  We need to help people reintegrate into society. If someone has paid their debt to society, they should certainly be told their rights have been restored.

Excellent way to live your beliefs.  I've never met you, Sonia, but when I do I want to shake your hand twice!

Republicans are walking their walk too! (0.00 / 0)
From a link in a Cornyn e-mail I just received:

What is the Texas Strike Force "Walk to Win" program?

Mission: A collaborative Voter ID effort

Launch: Super Saturday May 17

Goal: 100,000 Voter Contacts Door-to-Door before Memorial Day Weekend

Keys to Success:

  1. By working together, Texas Victory 2008, Republican Candidates and County Party Organizations will muster our collaborative strength to knock on doors and talk to voters personally.

  2. Walk to Win is a "Door-Knock" not just Lit Drop. We will reach new voters, register people to vote and gather and append valuable voter ID information to the Voter File that every Republican candidate can access.

  3. We will announce the results at the State Convention and remind our Democrat friends what a strong force they are up against when it comes to the Texas Strike Force and Victory '08.

United We Stand, Divided We Fall

Wouldn't it be great if every potential new voter they talk to has already been registered by Texas Democrats?
