Open Thread: Ciro Rodriguez Endorses Clinton

by: Open Thread

Fri May 09, 2008 at 10:53 PM CDT

Congressman Ciro Rodriguez, whose spokesperson cited the district's vote as a primary reason, announced an endorsement for Hillary Clinton.  As a United States Congressperson, he is a superdelegate to the DNC Convention.

What say you?  How significant is it that the district's support is the primary reason?

Disappointed (0.00 / 0)
As an Obama supporter and as someone from his district, it's disappointing.  It's his choice and I'll still vote for him in November.

It's just disappointing because of Clinton's recent statements and because I fail to see how she can win the nomination.

Aside from her winning his district, I think a part of it was that Bill came down here and campaigned for him in 2006.

One factor among several is fine, but odd timing. (0.00 / 0)
A bit late in the game to do it though, more than two months after Texas and when Hillary it's looking less and less likely that she'll win.  The fact that we need to get behind our nominee and it's >95% sure to be Obama at this point, it seems odd to be endorsing Hillary now.  Either you should hold back or you support her so much that you're willing to ignore the fact that she's very unlikely to win, in which case you should have endorsed her a lot earlier.

I think Hilary Clinton was making a personal attempt (0.00 / 0)
At least, that's what I got from the Chronicle article -- that Hilary herself was making calls.  Perhaps such calls became more frequent.

Also, the near-certainty of Obama's nomination (0.00 / 0)
could make it more or less moot - safe, in other words, to endorse the candidate preferred by his district without really doing any harm to our eventual nominee. Nothing for him to lose at this point in doing so, he maintains credibility with his constituents and the capital to go back to them this fall and say, hey, I endorsed Senator Clinton too, but we need to come together now - whereas endorsing Obama at this point could look more craven and opportunistic. His is a swing district after all and he has no need to make enemies, but if he was actually pulling for Obama, then coming out for Clinton earlier may have been more timely help that Ciro didn't want to give her.

And maybe he's just slow on the uptake (0.00 / 0)
Ciro Rodriguez has been one of the biggest Democratic disappointments of the past two years.

Not nearly so much so as the Clintons, but still ...

Reason or demon (0.00 / 0)
I'm a supporter of Edwards and now favor Obama. This is due to Obama addressing several issues that drew me to Edwards, one being the style of the campaign that Edwards ran seemed  issues based. Obama has run an issues (and intelligence) based campaign that is not the normal/usual demonizing your opponent. The change that I  want in campaigns is to run them on issues and not demons.

Ciro is a fine man and I respect his decision to support Clinton especially since his reason is plainly stated - his constituents supported Clinton. A politician that represents his constituents, what more do you want? I say good job Ciro, especially since he had an honest reason not a demon to support his decision.

If you have to demonize your opponent to win, it's not much of victory.

Obamanos and on to better campaigning.

No Surprise but Why Two Months? (0.00 / 0)
Back on the day after the Texas Primary, I commented:
Plus, I am still surprised Ciro Rodriguez hasn't announced that he will backed Clinton, since Bill really helped put him over the top in 2006.  So, I expect her superdelegate count in Texas will improve in the coming weeks.
His endorsement is no supris, but I am surprised that he didn't endorse before the primary. I don't really see the point of him endorsing two months afterwards.

I know he is a Democrat... (0.00 / 0)
...and this is a Democratic blog, but Ciro was known as "Zero" in the Lege for a reason.

I wouldn't try to figure out his reasoning on this.
