Laura Morrison's City Council Ad

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Sat Apr 26, 2008 at 05:44 PM CDT

Here is City Council Place 4 candidate Laura Morrison's TV ad.

I was trying to figure out which specific development those 3 ominous black towers were in the middle of the ad. Using Google Earth and it's new 3D buildings, it was pretty easy to pinpoint it to the Green Water Treatment Plant between the Seaholm redevelopment and City Hall, prime redevelopment land.

For kicks and grins (and since I'm not aware if a trio of towers has even been proposed for that land), I drew up some mock-ups of the towers and their approximate location in Google Earth and recorded the following fly-around.

Here is a high resolution file and a second flyby as well (and the Google Earth .kmz file if you want to play around with it).

Nice work. (0.00 / 0)
Except your towers are sitting on the Green site.  I think hers are sitting on the hike-and-bike trail.

Yeah well (3.00 / 2)
I figured that logically, they couldn't be built in the middle of the trail. Of course, one of mine is standing right in the middle of the creek, so that's not much better. But you get the picture. :)

Seeing as I've never seen those tower designs proposed, it's just a fear tactic. BOOO BIG SCARY CONDOS BADD!!!!!

I mean, seriously?

Not An Effective Ad (0.00 / 0)
Morrison's ad leaves more questions than it answers.

First of all, what does the project do with the reasons she is running for council? What we know is what Laura running against..not what Morrison is running FOR..

The general impression left is of a candidacy with a negative tone.

Fearmongering (3.00 / 1)
This sort of fearmongering and obstructionism is typical of Morrison.  Notice that she doesn't actually propose what should be done with this industrial site.

Also, there are two major factual errors in the ad.  First, one of those three sites is the location for the new central library.  Second, putting these properties on the tax rolls should actually lessen tax burdens on average homeowners (as public lands, they currently are not taxed).  Not to mention, that the Council has choosen to use the Green Redevelopment as a demonstration for how affordable housing can be built Downtown.  Also, if we don't build housing, I'm not sure how Austin will ever be able to maintain any sense of affordability.

This is the "pragmatist" endorsed by the Chronicle?

one more point (2.00 / 1)
even if they do build towers there, I don't think they'll be firebombed by the allied air force as displayed in the ad. :)

super bad (0.00 / 0)
not good. not convincing. not flattering. not persuasive.

didn't really learn anything about her.

could have inserted council candidate name "here" and run the spot. nothing special or unique about HER in the spot.

Brilliant ... but K-T ... (0.00 / 0)
