Candidates not being invited to the Inner Faith Forum

by: Purple Junkie

Mon Apr 21, 2008 at 03:11 AM CDT

Candidates Samuel Osemene, Allen Demling, Ken Weiss, Ken Vasseau, and Jennifer Gale were not invited to a public forum for Inner Faith on April 20, 2008.

When Inner Faith was spoken to they could not give the candidates any reason to why they were not invited to the Inner Faith Forum.

There are several questions that needed to be answered before this matter can be cleared up:

1. The Inner Faith group stated that they are non-partisan. If this group is non-partisan then why were not all the candidates running for Austin City Council invited to the forum?

2. The forum was a public event; did they not know that the candidates would find out something about this event?

3. Were these candidates honestly over looked or does  Inner Faith discriminate  against certain candidates?

4. Why couldn't every candidate running have a fair chance to speak in front of the Inner Faith Group?

5. Would Inner Faith be willing to apologize to these candidates admitting that they made a mistake and that this will never happen again?

The way I understand it (0.00 / 0)
Only candidates that had previously responded to requests to privately meet with Interfaith were invited to the public forum. I didn't attend, just heard that from an organizer.

Turnout was much larger than expected (7-800?). Maybe if it was a smaller crowd they would have felt more comfortable bending the rules. I understand that the other candidates were again offered an opportunity to meet privately with Austin Interfaith, and that would be considered in any endorsement.

Not all the candidate where offered opotunity to meet privately with Austin Interfaith (0.00 / 0)

Not all the candidates were offered the opportunity to meet privately with Austin Interfaith to be considered in any endorsement.

So, there for it was not fair to all the candidates and this is discriminating against the five candidates who were not given this opportunity or a chance to meet with Austin Inerfaith privately or to attend the forum. Not only that these five candidates were not sent the questions that were sent out to the rest of the candidates. Just because more people turned out does not give Austin Interfaith the right to discriminate against these five candidates.

Fair, I think not, discrimination yes!

That's a shame (0.00 / 0)
Having been to many forums first hand, those candidates are critical to make sure things don't turn into a snooze-fest. Well, Robin Cravey does spice things up sometimes, but still.
