Campaign Advertising: Print Edition

by: Open Thread

Mon Apr 07, 2008 at 10:42 AM CDT

"Rarely is the question asked, is our children learning?" -George W. Bush

This is an ad for Mindy Montford's campaign for Travis County District Attorney.

It appeared in today's Daily Texan.

Just don't get it confused with an LSAT ad.

Patronizing (3.00 / 1)
The Montford campaign went way overboard in it's attempts to appeal to the youth.  I'm not a big fan of internet speak type language, and for someone to speak to me with the assumption I should is condescending.  This is a University, not a chat on AIM.

"I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually."- James A. Baldwin

Odd stuff! (3.00 / 1)
At first glance I really thought that "yU Care" part was a production error of some kind...

The irony is... (3.00 / 3)
no one can vote today. Early voting ended Friday. So anyone who might show up can't actually go vote for her. They'd have to remember to do it tomorrow. D'oh!

I did see Montford standing outside the FAC early voting location last week, talking to a few undergrads. From what I heard (and/or eavesdropped on, and/or asked them why they were voting for her) they were mostly college-aged children of her friends.

In any case, go Rosemary!

U dont care? (0.00 / 0)
I dont vote 4 mindy (or rosemary) bc im not registered in atx.  4 rlz?

Ugh (0.00 / 0)
Yeah, terrible ad. But they really liked it and I didn't have the heart to tell them that any self-respecting hip college kid shortens "you" to "u," not "yU."

forgive me if I'm misinterpreting it (0.00 / 0)
but after a few readings I thought it translated to "What's Get Out The Vote And Why You Care".  Now, it could mean "What's GOTV Plus You Care" but I understand that even less than I understand my own translation.

Either way, it hasn't been that long since I was a student at UT and I have no idea what is being said or why they spelled it out like they did.

[ Parent ]
Alex... (0.00 / 0)
I think all self-respecting hip college kids should never shorten it to anything other than "you".

And sorry I can't vote for ya!  (Not a UDems member this year)

Haha, sure (0.00 / 0)
It's a deal. But I think you/u/yU should just join UDems.

Juz huen u thawt it cuwdent git wurser (0.00 / 0)
it did!!!!  I thought the new standard of low was the dog commercial , now this. I guess all the cool kids dig it, and that's all a DA really needs to worry about. OMG spread the wurdddd and tell ur bff 2 vote M.M. 4 D.A. 2morrow.

LOL! (0.00 / 0)

SSINF

FWIW the low point has to be Kelly Fero creating fake news on his own web site and then Lehmberg's campaign then citing the fake news in their campaign materials.

TTYL

[ Parent ]
Actually, with all due props to Kelly's stupidity (3.00 / 1)
I'd peg the low point at Karl Rove asking his buddies to support Mindy.

That beautiful yard doesn't belong to just anybody, though. It belongs to a longtime Austin lobbyist and Bush "Pioneer" who has told her neighbors that she's voting for Mindy Montford because her friend, Karl Rove, asked her to.

The yard belongs to Karen Johnson. Johnson was recently asked by one of her neighbors why on earth she was supporting a Democrat, since Johnson is a Republican, intimate of Rove, and Austin lobbyist. "I never have before, but Karl Rove asked me to help her," came Johnson's reply, a source tells Capitol Annex.

I have a feeling Karl's standards for a DA in charge of the Office of Public Integrity and mine are quite a bit different.

Actually Jobu could be right (0.00 / 0)
There's a difference between Karen Johnson supporting Montford (there are Republicans on each side of this race after all, though more on Montford's probably) and Karen Johnson supporting Montford BECAUSE Karl Rove told her to. Nothing in that post is evidence of anything Karl Rove did.

Hey! (2.00 / 1)
"2" is normally a "good" rating, even if it is the bastard of the ratings system.

Maybe I should have just made it a 4 for trusted users. lol

Love the new rating... (3.00 / 1)
2. is my new favorite, now that "OMG! Stop w/teh stoopid!!1" is gone.

This is an election for D.A. not prom queen (3.00 / 1)
What? Did her advisors read one of those "how to talk to your kids about drugs" pamphlets? I want a DA who's experienced, knows the law and can spell...especially the hard stuff like "conflict of interest," "ethics," "code of criminal procedure," "integrity," "indictment," "grand jury," and "fairness."

There's a PR consultant out there who should be fired... (3.00 / 2)
The Daily Texas is a college newspaper, not a highschool teenie-bopper mag.  Any of the students who would even begin to understand or respond to that type of language (if you can call it that) don't know a thing about DA run-off elections.  No only do they have no idea what a District Attorney does, but they probably have no idea what a run-off election is.  The students who do know and care about the run-off don't read whatever language is being used in that ad.  This is sort of like running a fierce anti-immigration ad in Spanish.

Did anyone actually attend the rally?  'twould be interesting to hear a report.

I just got another robocall from Mindy (0.00 / 0)
too bad they didn't check the voter files.  I voted first day of early voting. LOL

Though our name is on it, our UDems PR Director did not make the campaign lit. (we don't really go by University Dems...)
And UDems, several students, and some adult supporters made it out.
