Mark Thompson Last Voted in '96 GOP Primary

by: David Mauro

Fri Mar 28, 2008 at 00:51 PM CDT

If you needed another reason to vote for BOR endorsed candidate Dale Henry, here it is: his opponent, Mark Thomspon, has not voted since 1996, when he voted in the Republican primary and the November general election.

From the Houston Chronicle's Texas Politics blog:

Thompson agreed that he hasn't regularly voted although he said he cast a ballot in an Austin city election a few years ago. He remembers meeting Chris Bell in 2006 but isn't sure if he went to Travis County polls that year when Bell was the Democratic candidate for governor.

Thompson said he rarely votes because he's not excited about most candidates because they "just care about getting themselves in office."

Our own Vince Leibowitz, who is Henry's campaign manager, had this to say:

"Earlier this week, Thompson told the Texas Observer that Dale Henry wasn't fighting for the people and that was why he did so well on March 4," said Leibowitz in a press release. "Not only is that a complete fallacy based upon the fact that Thompson barely campaigned and most voters didn't have a clue who he was, but the idea that someone who hadn't voted in a decade is out fighting for the people in an election is utterly laughable."

Early voting begins Monday and Election Day is April 8.

I can't say I have been overly excited about every candidate in my voting history, but I still voted.

Most people who run for office do it because they feel it is their civic duty, much like voting. So it shows me a quality that Mark Thompson has that conflicts with that statement.

I am not sure how one makes the leap from not voting for a decade, to sorta kinda liking Chris Bell, to running for a statewide office that is one of our most important.

Been there, done that (3.00 / 1)
Speaking as someone who has been on the receiving end of one of these bombshells, voting history can definitely damage your campaign and be an effective political tool.  At the time I ran for Austin City Council in 2005, I was 26 and had only voted in three elections, none of which were City elections.  I tried to justify this to myself as everything from my young age to lack of candidate choice to the tone of politics, but it just came down to I was not being a responsible voter.

I used that as a learning experience, as we all must do when faced with adversity.  I have since voted in every City election and every Democratic Primary, and look forward to voting for Barack Obama in November (after the Travis County Run-off and City elections in May of course).  I even took my three year old to our caucus so he could absorb the process.  I'm hoping he'll avoid the mistake his old man made, and realize you can't change the tone of politics unless you participate...EVERY TIME.

Thanks for listening and have a great weekend everyone.

Casey has really put it well.  So few of us, myself included, truly learn from our past mistakes, so I find his comment even more inspiring and powerful because he's shared his own experience with us.

Despite being a self-proclaimed political junkie, I skipped a few elections when I was first eligible to vote, justifying by saying I was too busy and my vote wasn't going to count anyway, etc.  But Casey is right.  Nothing will change until we all realize that sitting out elections isn't a principled form of protest; it's just abdicating your responsibility.  Voting is about more than just having an effect on the outcome of a particular race; it's how we reaffirm our commitment to democracy.

"In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican." - H.L. Mencken

Could this guy be more clueless? (0.00 / 0)
Dale has driven all over this state, at his own expense, helping people who have environmental problems caused by the oil and gas industry that is enabled by the RRC.

To say that Dale isn't fighting for the people...well Thompson has no clue what a big lie that is.

Glad voting history is important for endorsement... (0.00 / 0)
I just wish BOR had taken this into consideration when they endosed a Republican, who has voted in Republican primaries since 1996, over a Democrat who has voted in Democratic primaries since 1954.

Candidate for 32nd Congressional District of Texas.

What is it about Thompsons and voting...? (0.00 / 0)
State rep candidate Brian Thompson had a very sketchy voting history, too.  In fact, he didn't vote in a Texas Democratic primary until this year.  I guess that issue didn't matter as much then, as BOR endorsed him anyway. ;)

By what Thompson had to say on this:

Thompson agreed that he hasn't regularly voted although he said he cast a ballot in an Austin city election a few years ago. He remembers meeting Chris Bell in 2006 but isn't sure if he went to Travis County polls that year when Bell was the Democratic candidate for governor.

Two things:

1.) Saying you can't remember if you voted is like saying you can't remember if you turned the coffee pot off.

2.) Last I checked, the corporate city limits of Austin did not extend into Hamilton County. Hamilton County records that Mr. Thompson has been a registered voter there since 1989. This means that either Thompson has voter registrations in two counties or he has a bad memory. If Mark Thompson had voted in 2006, it should have been in Hamilton County, where it does not appear on his voter history.
