I had hoped for Macias, for Dan's sake (0.00 / 0)
I went through the DFA training in April 2007 with Dan, and he's a great guy.  It would have been easier for him to pick off Macias (he's such a right wing nut), but I still think he'll be able to take out Doug Miller.

I even contributed to his campaign (not much, but every bit helps).  Use the PayPal donation link, or send a contribution by mail to:

Daniel Boone
Candidate District 73

there are times when I hope for the wingnut (0.00 / 0)
but this is a case where I was full on rooting against Macias.  What Leininger did in 2006 was some of the most ridiculous stuff I've ever seen and I'm glad to see someone get elected that actually knows the district and can be an effective legislator rather than a dittohead for Craddick.

I'll be rooting for Boone, and if I have a little scratch I'll contribute, but Doug Miller is light years ahead of Macias in terms of education and water issues.  He's a typical conservative with regard to immigration and other lightening rod issues, but the most important thing is that he knows the district and can represent their interests, not the interests of Midland.

Increasing local control, decreasing unfunded mandates, supporting strong schools and teachers, protecting the natural resources of the Hill Country and having healthy kids.  That's what's important in that district, and the debate between Boone and Miller will be how strongly to support those issues, not whether or not they'll even be addressed like we had with Macias.  I think that's fantastic.

A very good point (3.00 / 1)
We should be under no illusion that Miller won't be a conservative member of the Texas House. HD-73 is one of the most Republican districts in the state- but the key being that the counties it includes are becoming more intertwined with the Austin (and San Antonio) economies, media markets, and culture. It's a growing district, seeing rising economies, investment income, and a level of cultural history that stretches back 150 years which tempers the "reactionary" conservative movement that you see in some districts.

I fully expect Miller to be a conservative voice on many of the social issues. But contrary to Macias, a much more sensible vote on practical policy matters.

If I was still registered out there I would still support (and have donated anyways) to Daniel Boone who is a real Democratic candidate who speaks in the language of the district (just read his website). I don't expect him to win the seat, but he's a credible voice and banner carrier for the Democratic party in the GOP heartland and can serve to move the debate forward on issues like water, land use, education, and public services.

Comparing Education Backgrounds (0.00 / 0)
Joe, I appreciate your concerns for all the vital areas you've listed in terms of quality representation for D73. Gotta clear one item up though in regards to your comparing the education background of the R candidates:
Doug Miller: Bachelor's degree in Law Enforcement
Nathan Macias: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, 2 Master's Degrees=Business Admin; Environmental Management & Public Policy

You're right about one of them being light years ahead, you've just got the wrong guy in front, at least in terms of education.

If I'm not mistaken, Dan Boone holds a PHD in Experimental Psychology.

Cheers.
