Rick Noriega Gets Progressive Patriot Fund $$$$ from Feingold

by: Benny

Tue Mar 25, 2008 at 01:56 PM CDT

(Congratulations to the Noriega Campaign on this well deserved recognition. - promoted by David Mauro)

I'm proud to announce that the Progressive Patriots community has chosen U.S. Senate candidate of Texas Rick Noriega as our first 'Progressive Patriot' of 2008.  Of the thousands of progressives who cast their vote, Rick received the most votes and we'll be sending him a $5,000 contribution today to help his campaign.  While I'm sure it was difficult to choose among so many great candidates, we're thrilled to support Rick's campaign for the Senate seat in Texas.

Rick has spent his entire career serving this country.  Following a 14 month deployment to Afghanistan, Rick returned to his native Houston to coordinate Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.  In addition to his military background, Rick was elected to four terms in the Texas House.  I urge you to check out Rick's website at www.ricknoriega.com to learn more about his record and to find out how you can help Rick succeed in November.

We're also proud to have made smaller contributions to the other six great Senate candidates that you nominated.  With thousands of progressives voting from all 50 states, this round of 'Pick a Progressive Patriot' was exceptionally close and I'm proud the Progressive Patriots Fund is able to financially support all seven in their campaigns for the U.S. Senate.

Thank you for voting and I look forward to more 'Pick a Progressive Patriot' events as we move closer to the election in November.

Sincerely,

Russ Feingold
United States Senator
Honorary Chair, Progressive Patriots Fund

I voted for him, and I'm glad he won.

A pic of Rick and Benny from YK2 (now Netroots Nation) last year:

Go Rick, and please stop by the EENR Blog to live blog, where Edwards Democrats are focusing on Senate and House Races to get better progressives to push the progressive agenda.  Charlie Brown from CA-04 race live blogged there and some other Senate candidates will be stopping by to live blog there too.

I'm looking forward to a purple state in TX (3.00 / 1)
And Rick will do it.

I was so impressed that Rick went to Big Spring, Lubbock and Amarillo recently.  Those are towns in Shrub's backyard.  Rick is fearless.

Congratulations to Rick! (3.00 / 2)
This year's Netroots Nation is really going to be cool - right here in our own backyard.

WOO-HOO! (3.00 / 2)
Go Rick!
Congratulations on the nod from Progressive Patriots!

Noriega! (3.00 / 2)
I just got the email myself and came right over here to see if y'all knew.

This is awesome.

I spent 2004 being harangued and blamed by some liberals in this country for all our problems just cause I was from Texas.

I also spent the election of '04 working my ass off for the national candidates in a complete vacuum - Texas might as well have still been a republic.

FINALLY!  And BOR - thank you.  You and the other Texas blogs (along with the caucus system and a long strange election season)and all of us Texas liberals,  have put Texas back in play!

This just rocks!  Hooray!

Here's Rick's Response to this (3.00 / 2)
The evidence is clearer than ever: we're going to have the support to take back Texas," Says Noriega

Houston, TX -- U.S. Senate candidate Lt. Col. Rick Noriega today expressed his gratitude to the thousands of Americans who participated in the nomination and selection process of the Progressive Patriots' Fund, a process that led to Noriega's selection as 2008's first "Progressive Patriot."

Said Noriega, "We're running hard in every county in Texas, to hold Senator Cornyn accountable for his failure to take on our health care and energy crises, his support for the economic policies that are leading us to economic disaster, and his failure to demand a responsible plan to get us out of Iraq.  And people are responding."

"Grassroots Democrats from across the nation had a number of excellent Senate candidates to choose from, and I'm grateful they selected me as the first Progressive Patriot of 2008.  I'm also grateful for the support of the Texas grassroots, who I know helped make this endorsement possible.  While no one is going to agree with me on every issue, I intend to honor their support by fighting every day for the families in Texas and across America who are being left out by Mr. Cornyn's special interest agenda.  I will continue the momentum of change and accountability in Washington over the next eight months on the campaign trail, and as Texas' next U.S. Senator."

The Progressive Patriots' Fund, founded by deficit hawk and campaign finance reform hero Senator Russ Feingold, provided key support in 2006 for winning candidates such as Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio.

The endorsement and financial support of the Progressive Patriots' Fund comes in the wake of Noriega's historic win in the Democratic primary, in which he received over 110,000 more votes than Senator John Cornyn.  Noriega's primary win makes him the first Democrat to win a multi-candidate U.S. Senate primary without a runoff in Texas since 1976.

Shocked (joyfully though!) (3.00 / 1)
I am shocked that our great hometown candidate beat out such nationally recognized and followed candidates such as Warner and the Udalls. Wow, Noriega has really organized his base successfully, and now he is ready to convert Independents to the cause. Go Rick!

And if anyone is wondering the results were:
Rick Noriega (TX) - 35.1%
Andrew Rice (OK) - 21.0%
Mark Udall (CO) - 19.0%
Jeane Shaheen (NH) - 11.1%
Mark Warner (VA) - 5.7%
Tom Udall (NM) - 4.6%
Ronnie Mugrove (MS) - 3.5%

A fine slate (0.00 / 0)
of very deserving candidates.  I am glad that each received a contribution, though smaller than Rick's.  Congratulations to them all, and major props to Rick and his team for the win!
