BOR Endorsement: Dale Henry (Railroad Commissioner)

by: Burnt Orange Report

Mon Mar 17, 2008 at 08:00 AM CDT

On April 8, Texas Democrats voting in the runoff election have an easy choice to make in the only statewide runoff race on the ballot for Texas Railroad Commission.

The clear choice in this race is Dale Henry (D-Lampasas).

Dale Henry is not only the candidate who is most qualified for this position, but the candidate who gives Democrats the best chance for unseating incumbent Michael L. Williams in November.

Although you cannot tell such from its name, the Texas Railroad Commission is one of the state's most important consumer protection agencies. It has an important responsibility to protect Texas consumers from the physical and environmental dangers posed by the oil and gas industry.

The Texas Railroad Commission has abdicated that responsibility. Dale Henry pledges to change this, and make public safety and environmental protection top priorities for the agency that, over the last several months, has been chided by the media and even state appeals courts for its failure to act in the best interest of Texas consumers.

A retired petroleum engineer with more than four decades in the oil and gas industry, Henry has a unique understanding of both the responsibilities and the failures of the Texas Railroad Commission. He is a true progressive, and Burnt Orange Report wholeheartedly recommends him to Democratic Primary voters in the April 8 runoff.

Thank you! (3.00 / 2)
Thank you very much for this endorsement.

The numerous failures of the Texas Railroad Commission are deeply troubling to many Texans. The "rubber-stamp" culture of the Railroad Commission must change, and I am the candidate who will change it!

From rubber-stamping high cost-of-service rate increases for natural gas companies to rubber-stamping permits for injection wells that pollute groundwater, the Texas Railroad Commission has forgotten the meaning of public interest. To them, the "public interest" is not everyday Texans, it's the energy companies.

There is so much more that the Railroad Commission could do, not just in these areas, but in the area of promoting clean, renewable energy, to make Texas a better place.

I will work to do those things, and I appreciate your support.

Onward to Victory on April 8,
Dale Henry

Now I have a request for you (3.00 / 1)
As you campaign, please reiterate how much of a difference it will make to have a Democrat running the Railroad Commission. As Phillip Martin rightly noted, most people have no idea what the Railroad Commission is. So as you bring awareness to your own campaign for a position that you are well poised to win, you can also help to pave the way for our other statewide races, including Rick Noriega for U.S. Senate, and our Texas Supreme Court candidates, among others. It was a faulty mindset and lack of support of the state party that kept you from winning in 2006 (What? Chris Bell isn't the only Democrat running statewide? We don't have to do anything to help them, do we?).

We are working hard to turn this state blue again. You can help tremendously by allowing other Democrats, including Rick Noriega, ride your coattails.
