Where Is Myra?

by: John McClelland

Fri Mar 07, 2008 at 09:07 AM CST

(I wonder if that tune will make it on iTunes.. - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

My campaign has released the first campaign commercial of the 2008 general election season in House District 64.

We wanted to stand out from the crowd to publicize the campaign and this ad is a great beginning. The idea of the ad harkens back to the late Senator Paul Wellstone and his ads asking why his opponent at the time was never seen by his constituents. In this case, we want everyone to sing 'Where is Myra?' over and over in their heads while they wonder why their State Representative is rarely anywhere to be seen in District 64.

The concept of the commercial was the idea of J-Michael Cabosky and Michael Brown, new residents of the district, who recently moved their media production company to Denton from Beverly Hills. "I definitely wanted to do something fun and catchy for John's campaign to help voters remember his message," said Cabosky. "As a political junkie, my goal is to create a conversation throughout North Texas races.  Residents deserve to find out about the candidates, and what better way then internet political advertising."

District 64 includes the cities and communities of Denton, Corinth, Shady Shores, Lake Dallas, Hickory Creek, Lakewood Village, Oak Point, Lincoln Park, Paloma Creek South, Little Elm, and The Colony.

Thank you to the 10,845 people who voted for me in the Democratic Primary. Only 8,249 voted for Myra in the GOP primary. Maybe because they couldn't find her.

Wow (0.00 / 0)

That looks like exactly what I would envision an ad would look like if someone from Beverly Hills was trying to make fun of Texans.

p.s. you don't have to do an audio disclaimer for a state race.

Terrible (0.00 / 0)
John,

I totally support your campaign!  But this ad is terrible!

I agree (0.00 / 0)
No offense, but I have to agree that ad is terrible.

Agreed (0.00 / 0)
At the end of the ad, all I knew was her name, not yours. Tell J-Michael and Michael that people need to remember your name.

Jobu nailed it. Dump these guys and hire some pros.

But you might wish to reflect before making further use of this ad. As others here say, it looks like it is making fun of Texans.

I recall as a kid in Ohio a 1984 Mitch McConnell ad from across the river in Kentucky. It had bloodhounds looking for incumbent Senator Dee Huddleston. The dogs were sniffing around luxury vacation spots where Huddleston had been. That was a classic and did not make light of anybody except the incumbent.

Gross. (0.00 / 0)
This is one sure way to make people hate you.  I don't see what group of people this ad would go over well with.  I mean, you're a great guy, but I'd scrub this!  The funny accents are one thing, but the girl with a guy's voice?  That won't go over well at all.

Get some focus groups!

Are you really running for the state house (0.00 / 0)
or for a casting spot on HEE HAW? I agree with the other commenters, take this ad and bury it, fast.

Yes, what everyone else said. (0.00 / 0)
A little too Hee Haw.

Not Good (1.00 / 1)
Almost as painful to listen to as the Sally Kern rant a couple of stories above.

Am I... (0.00 / 0)
The only one that gets the tongue in cheek humor?  I dunno...being a Denton County resident, I think it's funny...and hey, even if apparently most of you don't like it, isn't ANY attention good attention in a race when otherwise there would be NONE?

Just a thought...

it's not about the humor (0.00 / 0)
It's about the fact that it mentions her name over and over and over and barely mentions his name at all. If you're challenging an incumbent, you don't want to reinforce that incumbent's name recognition, especially if you're a young up and comer that people don't know. Your early ads should say YOUR name over and over, NOT the incumbent's.

The ad is fine (0.00 / 0)
Don't you people have anything else better to do than hate?  It's obvious this was made in fun.  I'd rather see this that some 3am non-sense trying to scare me into voting for a candidate.
