Nelda Spears Won with a Capital "W" (2nd)

by: Justice

Fri Mar 07, 2008 at 08:50 AM CST

Nelda Spears got 74.28% of the vote to Glen Maxey's 25.72%.  In this down-ballot race, Nelda got 115,322 votes.  Once again, Nelda Spears got more votes than any other candidate in a contested race, except for Barack Obama who got 116,137 votes.

The Tax Collector's race was the 31st race listed on the ballot.  As might be expected, there was some ballot drop-off from the Presidential race, where 185,596 people voted, but 155,322 people voted in the Tax Collector race.

There were more ballots cast in the Tax Collector's race--way down the ballot--than any other race except the Presidential race.  There were more people voting in the Tax Collector's race than the 2nd-on-the-ballot race for U.S. Senator (139,537 votes) and the 27th-place District Attorney's race (140,310 votes).

Nelda won more than the election.  She kept her integrity and her dignity.  She stayed out of the dirty, deceitful political games that Glen Maxey wanted to play.  The enormous turnout in this race and the trouncing Nelda gave Maxey is a testament to the standards that Democratic voters have set for their political candidates and for their office holders.

If Glen Maxey wants to sell anyone political consulting services in the future, he will have a lot of explaining to do about how he conducted his own campaign and why he lost so big.  Maxey did not win a single one of the 210 precincts.  Running against Nelda was a bad idea in the first place and Maxey's negative campaign tactics turned a bad idea into an unmitigated disaster for himself.

The big lesson for elected officials is:

Do your job well, and the politics will take care of itself.

classy (4.50 / 4)
You know, I saw Maxey's email after the race, and it was respectful and classy.  You should have taken the deletion of this post as an opportunity to inject some class into your victory, but you've managed to trash someone who has pledged to help you win in November, and instead of reaching a hand out to a rather vocal set of Austin progressives you blast them.  Spears may have kept her integrity and dignity, you sure didn't.  Way to go buddy.

Classy or Merely Self-Serving? (1.00 / 1)

Maxey didn't even show the class to call Nelda Spears before he put out that self-serving revisionist press release.  He still hasn't called her--perhaps because he knows he owes her an apology for the deceitful campaign he ran against her if he really wants to work with her in the future.

Folks who respect Glen--or who, like me, want to regain respect for him--should encourage him to realize what horrible standards he injected into this Democratic Primary and renounce them.

Those of us to stood up for Nelda bit back when he attacked her.  The style of politics that he demonstrated in this campaign should not be encouraged...or forgiven if he is going to try to go on as if nothing happened.

nah... (0.00 / 0)
you wanted to be a goddamn jackass, Bill. Klassy, with a capital K.

Robo-call (0.00 / 0)

You want classy?

How about the Maxey robo-call saying Nelda doesn't care about deadbeat dads?

What about the klassy move... (0.00 / 0)
of Nelda's campaign staff claiming that people would DIE if Maxey were elected?

There was enough bullshit flying out of everyone in this race.

What Nelda Deserved (0.00 / 0)
The only things in this race that Nelda deserved was the overwhelming outpouring of support and the margin of victory.  The lies - yes, lies - that were told about her, her family and the tax office were just plain wrong.  There was nothing too low for the Maxey campaign.  Thankfully, the voters could see through the nastiness.

So she did doesn't support proof of citizenship? She doesn't support voter identification more strict that any republican legislation proposed?

Whew. I am glad to hear that. I almost believed the "low dirty campaign" of Glen Maxey.

You're getting it (0.00 / 0)

Now you're getting it.  It just takes some folks a little longer to catch on or get over the effects of Maxey's Kool-Aid.

sarcasm was missed.... (2.00 / 1)

Sarcasm? (0.00 / 0)
So Maxey's lies about the child support issue, East Austin foreclosures, voter registration statistics, and Nelda's family didn't disturb you?

And the Rove-like robocalls didn't disturb you?

Nelda handled herself with grace and class.

Maxey disgraced himself with lies.

It's time for him to apologize for the race he ran.
