Travis County DA Race: Runoff Between Lehmberg, Montford

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

We're catching up on races we were unable to report a lot on -- and this race, now going to the runoff, could be the most important race Travis County voters have for quite some time.

First, let's look at the results from Tuesday's four-way race:

The runoff is between Mindy Montford and Rosemary Lehmberg. We at BOR endorsed Lehmberg for the primary, and I'd imagine we'll do so again for the runoff. She's a well-qualified candidate, someone with tremendous experience in every aspect of the job.

We'll be reporting a lot on this race in the coming weeks. In the mean time, here's some resources for background on the race -- including previous coverage here at Burnt Orange Report:

  • Austin American-Statesman - Ronnie Earle announces his retirement
  • Texas Observer - A terrific, long discussion of the race
  • BOR - Ronnie Earle endorses Rosemary Lehmberg
  • BOR - Richard Morrison writes a diary titled, "Why the Travis County DA's race matters" that is a must read

Montford Supports Tom Delay? (1.00 / 1)
I have heard that Montford is really a Republican and has said behing closed doors that she will dismiss the case against Tom Delay.  If that is the case, please expose it and make sure that voters know what is going on here.

Lifelong Democrat (3.00 / 1)
Montford is a lifelong Democrat, and no one can legitimately question that.

Let's expose Montford's nefarious friends (3.00 / 1)

I have heard that Montford has also enlisted former Democratic Governor Dolph Briscoe, the AFL-CIO and the University Democrats (groups that have endorsed Mindy Montford) as cohorts in her scheme to dismiss the case against Tom DeLay.  After that they will be looking for ways to extend Tom Craddick's reign of terror for another two years.

Earle (1.00 / 1)
It would be good to know what Ronnie Earle thinks about Montford.  This is not my DA race, but since the Travis County DA is in charge of prosecuting elected officials, and since there are so many GOP criminals that need to be brought to justice, we need to ensure that Montford is not a wolf in sheep's clothes.

[ Parent ]
I can tell you what Earle thinks about Montford... (0.00 / 0)
...through his actions.

Earle handpicked Montford to work on the Delay-TRMPAC case.  She worked on that for a year and has publicly stated that she would continue it.

Every time Earle needed representation before the legislature over the last several years, he sent Montford to represent him and the office.

Earle is out and you are off (0.00 / 0)
I don't know Mindy Montford, but I know the family she comes from, and republican it ain't.

There is zero evidence that Montford isn't a Democrat.  One could argue that there is more evidence Montford is a Democrat than Lehmberg.

Since we're exposing things...why don't you expose your true identity? How do we know you are not a "wolf in sheep's clothes"?  I'll bet you are not as independently wary and concerned for our greate state as you oversell.

Offer evidence for your accusations or don't put them out. Calling someone a republican is a very serious charge in my eyes.

Calm Down Angry Person (0.00 / 0)
I simply asked a question in response to a rumor that is floating around out there.  Isn't that what blogs are for - to expand one's base of factual knowledge?  It looks like Montford is okay based on the posts.  However, like it or not, there is a rumor floating out there that she would let Delay off the hook.  Based on the representations on this blog (i.e. David Holmes post, not yours), it seems it is just that - a rumor.  In any event, you need to calm down and respond in a professional manner.  You do not do your supported candidate any good when you post angry blogs instead of responding professionally with facts.

[ Parent ]
no you didn't (0.00 / 0)
you tried to spread a ridiculous "rumor" (aka slander/libel) without attributing it to a specific source or offering evidence.

I'm undecided about which candidate to support in the runoff. I think both are good people with different types of experience and offer generational differences that might cut both ways. I think disparaging either by calling them a republican is repugnant.

You still don't get it. Your claims of innocence "just asking a question about a rumor" don't convince any objective person. The only credible mention about Delay is Rick Reed saying Rosemary didn't want to prosecute.

Guess you didn't bother to catch that "rumor".

The facts are obvious to everyone but you: Montford is a Democrat and there is zero credible evidence that she would let delay off the hook.

The facts don't support your "questions" in any way, shape or form. Even cursory research or googling would have answered this "question" for you. Right or wrong, my kneejerk is that your effort is an attempt to slander a Democrat.
