Top Ten YouTube Moments of the Presidential Campaign

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

Fri Feb 29, 2008 at 00:30 PM CST

I've put together the list of what I think are the top 10 YouTube clips of this Presidential primary campaign. I've done my best to find clips that are well known and had (at least some) influence and/or interest. I think you'll enjoy the list.

Feel free to disagree with my order in the comments, and let me know which ones I missed. Watch all 10 videos below the fold...

#10: "A snowman's biggest question"

From the YouTube debate, the most ridiculous (but most memorable) question of the night:

#9: "Vote different"

This take-off on the famous 1984 Mac commercial helped set the frame for Obama's campaign:

#8: "Bill Clinton on Barack Obama"

This small gaffe was talked about (perhaps unfairly) for weeks, and is often still mentioned as being the reason President Clinton was moved out of the spotlight leading up to Super Tuesday:

#7: "Full SNL Democratic Debate Sketch - Hillary vs. Obama 2008"

Senator Clinton referenced this sketch in the Ohio debate:

#6: "Bitch is the New Black"

Our second SNL clip, longtime SNL cast member and writer Tina Fey puts to bed some of the ridiculous reasons many out there have found not to vote for Senator Hillary Clinton:

#5: "Halloween at the Clinton's"

Our third and final SNL clip (what can we say -- the show is still pretty good) has Senator Clinton hosting a Halloween party for the Democratic candidates. The two Spongebobs are my favorite:

#4: "Hillary Clinton Sopranos Parody"

Genuinely funny, well-timed, and in good spirits:

#3: "I Got a Crush on Obama"

Yes, we all hate this song now. And yes, she didn't even find the tiny acumen of brain power necessary to remember to vote. But no one can say this video didn't make a splash this election season:

#2: "Hillary Clinton Tears Up During Campaign Stop"

An honest, though infamous, moment of the campaign -- the ridiculous accusations made after this that Senator Clinton wasn't tough enough to handle the campaign helped (possibly) lead to her win in New Hampshire. I empathized with her that day, and watching the honest moment now -- in today's context -- reminds me of how much I respect her.

#1: "Yes We Can Song by will.i.am"

This doesn't make #1 because we endorsed Senator Obama -- this is #1 because it is by far the most creative use of the internet and the forum that YouTube provides to further the cause of a campaign. The song has been watched several million times, and -- in my opinion -- deserves the distinction of the top YouTube video of the campaign season:

Disagree with me below -- tell me what I missed. More importantly -- enjoy.

pretty good list (0.00 / 0)
I might add Elizabeth Edwards calling MSNBC to spar with Ann Coulter, or the "driver's license" debate question since that seemed to be the moment Hillary started faltering.

Elizabeth Edwards was a good one (0.00 / 0)
I loved her for that, and made my first big contribution to a presidential candidate after I saw that video.

Sorry about the SNL videos (0.00 / 0)
I've tried finding links to them -- just not happening. NBC should learn how to share those clips -- it's not losing them any money to have them on YouTube. What -- I'm going to go back in time and watch the show?

Ugh.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

they moved all their stuff to the NBC universal web site, but I don't care enough to look.

Yeah (0.00 / 0)
Probably. It's a shame -- its all funny stuff. That's why I like the Daily Show and Colbert Report so much -- they want you to YouTube all their stuff.

Senator Clinton's Teary moment - Plagiarism?? (0.00 / 0)

What is good for the goose is good for the gander.

Petty charges of plagiarism have been thrown at Obama - but there is a blatant example of using someone's phrases in the famous video of Senator Clinton's teary moment in New Hampshire.

Sorry to delve into something that is petty. I am doing this grudgingly just to show inconsistency and maybe hypocrisy on the charge of plagiarism that the Sen. Clinton campaign had thrown at Sen. Obama.

When I saw the video today on your top 10 list of videos, it reminded me of how the phrase "This is very personal for me" had struck me as something very similar to what Senator Edwards had used in one of his speeches. Today, after all the attacks on Obama for plagiarism I decided to look into it and did a quick Google search for: '"This is very Personal for me" Edwards'.

I found the use of the phrase "This is very personal for me" on Jan 7th in New Hampshire that Senator Clinton used in the teary moment was exactly the same as what Sen. Edwards had used in a speech in Ames Iowa on Jan 1st, 2008 in  Iowa, a few days earlier. (See the YouTube video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... )

This search confirmed that Senator Edwards had used it earlier in the primary in a speech in Aims Iowa on Jan 1st 2008. In addition in the search results, there was a reference to the phrase used by Sen. Clinton - "Some people think that politics is a game .." having been used earlier by Sen. Obama which I have did NOT get a chance to follow up on and confirm.

Just trying to set the record straight, and with NO intention of feeding the needless partisan back and fro between supporters of two great candidates for the Democratic Party nominee. Enough of that already!!
