Nelda Spears Endorses Republican Voter Supression Bills?

by: Matt Glazer

Mon Feb 11, 2008 at 06:04 PM CST

In a recent e-mail, former State Representative and community leader Glen Maxey shares an alarming experience during the Austin Chronicle endorsement meeting.

Nelda Wells Spears, the current Tax Assessor Collector and director of voter registration, was asked why she didn't go to the Capitol to speak against the Republican voter suppression bills.  Her answer is stunning.

Ms. Spears response was shocking. She said she thought requiring ID and proof of citizenship when registering to vote was a great idea and something we needed.

This is a follow up from January 10th when Spears said at the Capitol Area Democratic Women's forum, "People have to check that box that says they're a citizen.  We have a lot of people from other countries.  We need something, some way... to make sure they're all citizens when they register to vote."

Two days earlier, a non-partisan, independent study showed that voter ID bills suppressed legal voting.

After watching the debate around HB 218 and 626 unfold during the 80th legislature, I can say that the Craddick, Abbott, and Dewhurst lead charge to suppress minority voters is not the answer.  It is troubling to hear a Democratic candidate echo the Republican talking points.

Damn that Spears!

Shocking indeed (0.00 / 0)

Yes, it is shocking to hear that Glen Maxey doesn't think that citizenship is a condition for registering to vote.

The bill (HB 626) that Nelda commented on required the voter to indicate on the application some form of proof of citzenship (driver's license number, for example) and, if the voter didn't have any of those standard documents, they could merely  sign an affidavit that he/she is a citizen.

We Democrats should fight evil works by the Republicans in a united way.  But it is plain stupid for Maxey to go to this extreme and suggest that Democrats should not include some sense of protecting the integrity of our elections in our Party's position.  That's political suicide.

Shocking that Nelda supports HB 626 (0.00 / 0)
Democrats should be taking to the streets. HB 626 was the worst of the worst of the Voter ID bills.

Austin Chonicle: This bill requires proof of citizenship for voter registration, and get this: It will mandate presentation of a birth certificate (not a photocopy, but the actual thing), or U.S. citizenship papers, or an unexpired passport. You know all those ways we've tried to boost voter registration, things like registration drives on college campuses and in poor neighborhoods, or while you're at the drivers license office, etc.? They'll be gone. Bye-bye.

Spare us the spin. This is an outrage. You are repeating the worst of the Republicans talking points about Voter ID.

Why Not A Poll Tax Too? (0.00 / 0)
Heck, that's why the TACs were put in charge of elections in the first place.  Another example of why this function needs to be de-politicized by creating a new independently-elected county elections adminstrator.
