Dan Grant Endorsed by Texas AFL-CIO

by: Matt Glazer

Thu Jan 24, 2008 at 05:21 PM CST

According to a press release, Congressional candidate and Austin native, Dan Grant received the full endorsement of the Texas AFL-CIO in his race for the Democratic nomination for Congressional District 10.

"The working families of Texas have put their support behind me," Grant said. "They can count on me to go to Washington and help us all to make a fresh start in a new direction."

Grant earned the official backing of the Austin Central Labor Council, the Brazos Valley Central Labor Council, the Harris County Central Labor Council, and the Texas AFL-CIO in the March 4 Democratic primary.

Grant is challenging Mike McCaul in the November general election and Larry Joe Doherty in the March 4th Democratic primary.

This is an amazing endorsement! (0.00 / 0)
Dan Grant is going to make a great Congressman.

Congratulations, Dan! (3.00 / 1)
and the best to you on your journey, as you head on to November.

An amazing turnaround (3.00 / 1)
Not that long ago, Larry Joe Doherty had two important endorsements -- Barbara Radnofsky and Richard Morrison -- and Dan Grant had nothing. Since then, Grant has picked up some influential individuals, a bunch of club endorsements and the AFL-CIO, while Doherty hasn't picked up anything.  There are a few more club endorsements out there, and the newspapers haven't weighed in yet. Those could tilt things back for Doherty, but I wouldn't bet on it.  Grant is on a roll.

This is as influential as the AFL-CIO endorsement: (0.00 / 0)
the Harris County Central Labor Council

The question, all along, has seemed to be: So who will the Eastern half of the district support? I think the more the district learns about Dan, the better he does.

Dan is speaking to constituent's concerns and issues, not framing his legitimacy by fund raising numbers.

It's part of the same thing (0.00 / 0)
To get the support of the statewide AFL-CIO, you first need the support of the local Labor Councils in your district.  For CD10 that means Austin, Brazos Valley and Harris.

But you're right that support in the eastern half of the district is essential to Dan Grant's chances. It's possible to win the primary with just a strong Travis base, but to have any chance in the fall he'll need a lot of help in Harris and the rural counties.  For that, he needs to become the consensus candidate ASAP, and not just the Austin-area candidate.

Ted Ankrum's endorsement will help.  Labor's endorsement will help. Do the Democratic clubs in Katy, CyFair and the 1960 area endorse? It will be interesting to see what they do.

Generally speaking, the "tweener" clubs don't endorse... (0.00 / 0)
...in contested primaries. It is, however, easy to gauge the levels of support in the counties between Travis and Harris. That's because our clubs generally have a core of 20-30 members and they generally reflect the demographic makeup of the county, as a whole.

I see that getting the local labor councils is key to getting the AFL-CIO endorsement. The reason I think the Harris County endorsement is insightful is that's where we've been told Larry Joe's strength lies, and that doesn't seem to be translating into endorsements.
