Cid Galindo Fundraising Report

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Mon Jan 14, 2008 at 05:00 PM CST

I'm not sure that we've really discussed the fact that there is another candidate in the Austin City Council Place 4 race (Dunkerly's open seat) for which Laura Morrison and Robin Cravey are running. From his press release...

Cid Galindo today announced that he raised more than $11,000 in the first 30 days of his Austin City Council campaign, saying that his success in bringing together a diverse group of supporters over the holidays underscores how strongly voters want to unite behind a candidate who will move the city beyond the battles of the past to address the challenges of the future.

"We may not have the most money in this race, but our report shows that our campaign will have enough resources to show that we have the best message," Galindo said. "I am grateful for such strong support as we make the case for the kind of positive change that can turn Austin into one of America's greatest cities."

The former City of Austin Planning Commissioner, running for the Place 4 seat being vacated by Betty Dunkerley, filed his campaign finance report for the period ending December 31.

With $7,350 raised from 22 contributions in the period from December 10 through December 31, Galindo's report shows a broad spectrum of Austinites backing his campaign, from advocates for parks, neighborhoods, and the arts to champions of education, high-tech, health care reform, and sustainable development.

Galindo said he has brought in an additional $3,800 in the first two weeks of the new year, for a total of $11,150 as of Sunday.

hmmm... (0.00 / 0)
nothing on the city clerk's site yet.  I'll check it tomorrow to parse the names. It is pretty funny to hear the developer/business candidate carp about not having the most money. :) I'd be surprised if he didn't end up with the most by the end.  $7350 from just 22 contributions is pretty good given the 300/300 limit.  Lot of maxing out and husband/wife bundling(can domestic partners bundle?).

its tough to decide who to support in a city council race because most of the candidates are good Democrats. from what i have heard about cid galindo, i dont think ill have that problem in this race.

Galindo and "good democrats" (0.00 / 0)
If you're going to equate the pro-sprawl anti-affordability reactionaries in the BATPAC with "good democrats", as I expect you do, then, yes, Galindo's not going to be your man. But otherwise, he seems like a good choice - I want to see how he squares up against Cravey for sure, but the best thing a "good democrat" could get at this point is a strongly pro-densification city council member who could get some traction in reversing the past five years' trend towards LOWERING density in the neighborhoods nearest downtown.

i was referring to his ties to the Texas Public Policy Foundation, a conservative think tank.

please elaborate (0.00 / 0)
What would those ties be?  Lots of "good dems" work with the TPPF on issues where they agree with them - there were a bunch of "good dems" at TPPF's policy orientation last week.

[ Parent ]
Which ones? (0.00 / 0)
I don't know a single "good dem" who wants to be tied to TPPF or James Leininger. I hope you will elaborate as well.

I was at that TPPF event (0.00 / 0)
I went to listen to harebrained policy schemes like Abbott's nutty healthcare plan.

Some "good dems" participated on the panels as opposing viewpoints, but didn't really agree with anything TPPF was espousing.  An example would be Hochberg, who basically embarrassed the right wingers and voucher nuts (including Ron Wilson) on the panel about education policy.  I wouldn't necessarily call that "working with."

At any rate, participating on a panel as an "opposing viewpoint" at a policy forum is a bit different than working to advance the TPPF conservative agenda.

on toll roads? Yeah. Many 'good Democrats' work on toll roads.  We call them 'Republicans'.

What ties? (0.00 / 0)
Do you mean the stuff reported on Austin Political Report, which looks like his DAD is connected to them? The TPPF hates smart growth and public transit and densification and all that stuff - they're not exactly ideologically compatible.
