"I love the 80s"

by: M. Eddie Rodriguez

Mon Jan 14, 2008 at 09:30 AM CST

In a lightning-quick, tech-savvy and fun response to challenger Todd Hunter’s press release, the Juan Garcia Campaign has defined the race for HD-32:

The tired old crony power structure vs. The new generation of Texas leaders.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

Wickedly funny (0.00 / 0)
Love it!

Hugo Berlanga? (0.00 / 0)
You know I sort of remember that name from a long time ago, but I did have to google it to refresh my memory.

This spot gets it right - tired old cronies versus the new generation of leaders.  Let's move forward!

brilliant! (0.00 / 0)
that hugo berlanga, he's sooooooo 1998.

and judy hawley's sooooooooo 2001.

todd hunter's crazy for having the support well-regarded people (especially democrats!) from corpus christi.

the last thing he'll want is pete laney's suport, that dinosaur!

Berlanga got elected in 1976 (5.00 / 2)
and served in the 65th Legislature.

Well regarded? Not likely. Float Hugo's name around the Austin and CC and see what response you get.

Who knows what party Hugo and Judy belong to but they haven't truly helped Democrats in God knows how long. Decades?

Given your past love affair with Republicans and your curmudgeon-ness, we'll take your thoughts with a grain a salt.

and relax a little, stop taking yourself so seriously - they are all grown ups and can take a little ribbing

Berlanga and Hawley are Democrats? (0.00 / 0)
Are you sure about that?  With all the party switching of late, I'm not so sure.  After all Hunter is running as a republican isn't he?  And if Berlanga and Hawley are supporting the republican in the upcoming republican primary, then I would certainly question their party affiliation.

We have a great opportunity as a Democratic party to take control of the Texas House and remove the Craddick dictator and one of the seats we need is HD32.  Yet Berlanga and Hawley would rather the republicans stay in control of the House.

Hugo Berlanga is why people hate lobbyists. He was a complete (0.00 / 0)
revolving door whore, setting up his cash-out while in the Legislature and collecting his mordita soon after he left the Legislature.  He's a kleptocrat in the worst tradition.

Todd Hunter is also a favors-for-hire lobbyist, and he also epitomizes exactly what is wrong with government -- he's already pledged his soul and vote to Craddick.

Judy Hawley flipped to the dark side when she got neck-deep in the TTC property condemnation/privatized public highways shenanigans.

These are three sleazy peas in a scummy pod who sold themselves for filthy lucre.

Great find on that Berlanga lobby list (0.00 / 0)
From the revolving door lobby client list for Hugo Berlanga from the Texans for Public Justice files, linked above.

Berlanga exemplifies how government works in Austin as in Washington. He resigned as a powerful committee chair in March 1998 to become a revolving-door hired gun. By 1999, Berlanga billed 22 lobby clients between $635,000 and $1.3 million. One-third of these clients were health interests affected by his old committee.

Now someone tell us again how Hugo is looking out for the best interests of this district by supporting Hunter?

I actually used to respect Rep. Hawley. (0.00 / 0)
When I worked in the House in 2001, Rep. Hawley was a respected member.  She was a WOMAN chair of the rural caucus, and one of the last few white women D's.  She quickly lost some respect with the TTC fiasco, but she was still nonetheless like able.  What in the world would possess her to endorse Hunter?
