The Shot Heard Round the State

by: Todd Hill

Wed Dec 19, 2007 at 10:00 AM CST

The shot heard round the world was a phrase best associated with the start of the American Revolution by means of the Battle of Lexington and Concord during the 18th century.  Last night represents the beginning of a political revolution and a united Tarrant County Democratic Party helped lift Dan Barrett to victory.  This win should be seen by Democrats as the shot heard round the state and the beginning of our political revolution in Texas.

I returned from Dan's victory party rather late after a long day of phone banking and block walking.  The energy we had last night could have lit neighborhoods across the Lone Star State.  What this election confirms is what many of us who live in Tarrant County, and have been working towards rebuilding our Party here, have been saying for months now-there's something happening here.  This campaign created a blueprint that can now be utilized in campaigns across the state: cede no precincts, field committed candidates where you can, hit Republicans dead in the jaw with a strong message of change, utilize your resources wisely, and build a unified base of support to execute the plan.

This campaign was clearly a referendum on Speaker Tom Craddick and his autocratic, heavy-handed, my way or the highway style of leadership.  Consider this victory a shot across the bow of Craddick's sinking ship.  It is clear that Texans, even those who tended to trend Republican in the past, are ready for the type of change Democrats can bring to offices across this state.

What's more is the Republican Party in Tarrant County, and perhaps even across the state, is fractured.  There was no call to arms for volunteers by Republicans in Tarrant County, no visible organization by the Mark Shelton campaign, and no clear attempt on the ground to mount a challenge to Barrett.  Signage for Dan outnumbered Shelton in most areas of 97.  Some outlying polling locations were empty of any visible Shelton presence yesterday.  There seemed to be no GOTV literature of any kind out in the precincts encompassing district 97.  Why, if Shelton raised so much money and had such a proven juggernaut could he not deliver?  Republicans either conceded this election completely in the hopes of regaining it in 2008 when resources are less concentrated, no real support for Shelton amongst the Republican base, and/or a solid candidate in Dan Barrett with a solid message resonated with voters.  I believe it was a combination of all those points.

With that said, Democrats in Tarrant County worked together to execute a flawless campaign and a referendum against Tom Craddick and his Republican lemmings.  The momentum and energy we now have not just in this county, but for Democrats across this state, will translate to bigger victories in 2008.

Tarrant County Democrats delivered a victory when many thought we couldn't, but last night, we delivered the shot that has now been heard round the state.

Excellent post Todd... (0.00 / 0)
I'm not certain but I think this is the first time in 30 years that Dems have held 4 of the 10 state reps seats in Tarrant County!

It just goes to show... (0.00 / 0)
...what Tarrant County Democrats, working together, as a team, for a great Democratic candidate can do. If we continue to work together, countywide, and stick to our Democratic principals, I beleive that Democrats will continue to win in 2008 and beyond.

Lots of folks contributed to this victory... (0.00 / 0)
Dan ran a smart campaign...Midcities folks helped out a ton...Juan Rangel and Joel Burns pushed alot of folks to the polls...our southside phone bankers did a bangup job...the Tarrant County Democratic Party opened it's doors and resources to Dan's campaign and the dedicated folks from the Stonewall Dems came through as well.

Great Post! (0.00 / 0)
Congratulations to Dan Barrett and his volunteers on taking down Shelton. Great job

Dan Barrett's victory in District 97 last night was the result of a cooperative effort to benefit a well-qualified Democratic candidate.  Time, energy and resources from all over Tarrant County came together to put this one in the WIN column.  It shows what can be done when Democrats pull together.

Dan Barrett's victory can be the impetus for more Democratic wins in Tarrant County in 2008. Barrett's campaign was a cooperative one.  The Democratic campaigns next year will be coordinated ones, much as the Dallas County Democratic campaigns were so successfully coordinated in 2006.  Tarrant County Democrats, working together and sharing resources efficiently, can produce similar results for our candidates in every corner of the county next year.   This Barrett victory is not a fluke - it's a beginning.

Shout out to MCD (5.00 / 1)
Mid-Cities Democrats were awesome in their turn-out to get Dan elected. It will take the commitment, dedication, and follow-through of Dems like Mid-Cities if we are going to have this type of victory in 2008. A lot of people will be taking credit for the victory, but the #1 person who deserves credit is Dan Barrett (and his wife Deborah)  for putting his name on (allowing his name to be put on) the ballot, sticking to the message, and working each and every waking hour of each and every day to make it happen.

I doubt the Republicans (0.00 / 0)
conceded this election at all.  The dpi was so heavily in their favor that they assumed they didn't have to put forth an effort to win.

$100,000 (0.00 / 0)
That's how much Shelton spent...I would say they put forth a little effort!

more or less (0.00 / 0)
Maybe they should have spent less money and stopped reminding voters that Shelton was a Craddick supporting Republican. Might have helped their cause, haha.

RE: Dan Barrett is Tony Romo of Texas politics (0.00 / 0)
Dan Barrett is a friend and colleague of mine.  Dan is a great guy and lawyer.  I knew that he would make a great public servant.  Dan was a good candidate in 2006.  Like Tony Romo did as a back up quarterback, Dan watched and learned how to be a great candidate.

When Anna Mowery surprised many and resigned, Dan Barrett found his voice as a candidate and marched his team down field.  When given this chance to shine, Dan, like Romo, rose to the occassion.  I watched Dan at a candidate forum in fall 2007 and was impressed how crisp and effective Dan had become at delivering his message in a way that appealed to people not highly involved in politics but highly affected by politics.  Like Romo, Dan likes to throw to many different "recievers."  Many different groups worked hard for Dan, and Barrett's developed talents as a candidate complemented those efforts.  By taking it one step at a time, I believe Dan will be re-elected.

And because Dan has such a great wife, we don't have to worry about Jessica Simpson jinxing the Barrett campaign!

Congrats Dan and let's redouble our efforts in 2008.
