Gary Cobb Is In

by: Matt Glazer

Tue Dec 18, 2007 at 00:25 PM CST

Gary Cobb has become the first to formally announce his candidacy to replace District Attorney Ronnie Earle (ed. note- Rick Reed filed his paperwork on the 14th but we are unawares of an official statement on his behalf).  Cobb is an assistant district attorney and has worked with Earle.

The Statesman recently profiled the likely entries and had this to say about Cobb:

Grew up in Mississippi before attending the University of Texas School of Law from 1983 to 1986. He's been a prosecutor at the Travis County district attorney's office since 1990.

Among his many prosecutions, Cobb got a life sentence against George Weldon Smith, a Del Valle youth coach, for sexually abusing a young boy for four years. He also prosecuted Celeste Beard, who was sentenced to life for plotting to have her wealthy husband killed for his money.

Cobb said he would encourage prosecutors to get involved in the community to build trust.

"Ronnie Earle has established a tradition of responding to the community," Cobb said. "We need to be more pro-active."

With Earle retiring this easily becomes one of the most interesting races this primary season.

I think Rick Reed may have been the first to file, though I'm not sure if he's announced. He did it like, that day.

yeah, Rick has been making the rounds, saying that "If Ronnie Retires, I'm running."  Not sure if that counts as official, but he's definitely been politicking for over a month now.

I didn't see his filing (0.00 / 0)
I knew he had been talking about it along with the others mentioned in the statesman article, just unaware of his actual filing/announcement.

It's on the TDP's website under the county filing section, listed as 12/14.

is actually a minority elected official that attended EAI meetings weekly.  I appreciate that.

Lacresha Murray case? (0.00 / 0)
I read a comment from someone using the name "Mr. J" on the Austin Political Report that said Cobb "was the chief prosecutor against Lacresha Murray, an 11 year old girl charged with murder. Cobb used a coerced confession to convict. The case was later thrown out by a Republican appeals court. Murray is now suing in federal court. You can read Bob Herbert's article in 11.22.98 NYT. My bet is Travis County voters aren't going to forget that case. We insist that our elected officials be fair, especially when kids are involved."

I have no idea who that commenter actually is or if they are right about Cobb's role in the Murray case, but I would certainly be interested in hearing what role any DA candidate had in the Murray case.
