Sadun Endorses Dan Grant for Congress, TX-10

by: LSadun

Wed Dec 05, 2007 at 10:27 AM CST

I am happy to endorse Dan Grant for Congress in the 10th District of Texas. Dan's experience makes him supremely qualified to be a Congressman in a time of war, and his temperament will make him a tremendous Representative in peacetime.

The biggest challenge we face is the war in Iraq. Dan's 18 months under fire in Iraq, helping the Iraqis manage their elections, give him a unique perspective on what can and can't be done. For the last 3 years, Michael McCaul has blindly supported every blunder that the Bush administration has made in Iraq. Dan Grant can see through the lies, and he isn't afraid to speak the truth. In an election with the Iraq war as the central issue, there is no stronger candidate than Dan Grant.

Serving in Congress means more than just voting against the war. A true Representative listens to his district, does his homework, and acts to help his constituents. Unlike Michael McCaul, whose constituent service is nonexistent, Dan Grant learned constituent service as an aide to the master, Jake Pickle. He is humble enough to learn what he doesn't already know, and he is committed to using his position to help real people with real problems.

Any Democrat would be a huge improvement on Michael McCaul, but Dan Grant isn't just "any Democrat". His Texas roots and Texas-sized heart, coupled with a world of experience, make him uniquely qualified.

Thanks again for your run at it (5.00 / 2)
It takes a lot to step up and run, and I'm glad you did, when you did.

I'm also glad to see your support for Dan in this cycle. It's going to be an exciting race, through March and beyond!

Dan is by far the most qualified to face McCaul... (5.00 / 1)
...in the general election. That, and he has the best chance of beating McCaul in a race based on ISSUES, not who can raise the most money (although Dan's fundraising has parity with his primary challenger).

We are not republicans (0.00 / 0)
I think very highly of Lorenzo Sadun and he is a real blessing to Texas Democrats. Texas used to be hopelessly republican and opposing a republican in a gerrymandered district was like tilting at windmills. As a result of his efforts and the national climate, Texas is changing. I think democrats in this election cycle and future election cycles will do well.

The War in Iraq is a republican issue. George Bush is the only one who has any interest in keeping The War in Iraq in the American consciousness. It's how he got re-elected and it will define his legacy. He can't run in 2008 so before the next election, he will begin withdrawing troops and declaring victory. I cringed when I read that an issue that appeals to republicans would be a deciding factor in endorsing a candidate in a democratic primary. We can't beat republicans by acting republican.

Democrats care about people. We care about raising healthy and well educated children; we care about building strong communities; we care about a fair economy; and we care about the public welfare. Let's return to the proactive thinking that prevailed in the 90's when the democrats ran the country.

The moment I saw Barbara Radnofsky endorse Larry, I felt that Dan had this (0.00 / 0)
race in the bag.

I love Barbara, but she seems to have a tin ear for politics.

Larry Joe Doherty (0.00 / 0)
Larry Joe is by far the most qualified person to take on Michael McCaul next November. For one he is the only one who will be able to put the financial resources into the race necessary to defeat the wealthy, big business backed McCaul. Secondly, he is not a one-issue candidate. Larry has plans to improve energy policy, our health-care system, and a flailing economy. And lastly Larry is not polarizing, he has ability to pull moderate Republican votes which will undoubtedly be crucial to winning back the 10th district for Democrats.

30 Second Rebuttal (5.00 / 3)
I must disagree with your posting, and would like to refute a couple of your statements.

First of all, other than the unsubstantiated belief by some that LJD is the only candidate capable of raising big money, on what basis is LJD the most qualified candidate? Also, I'm not sure that selecting Democratic representation based on financial strength is the best way to progress forward as the party of the people.

Secondly, I am forced to infer by your statement that you think Dan Grant is a one-issue candidate. Over the last four months, Dan Grant has put out no less than 29 press releases, addressing issues including children's health care, worker's rights, and yes...Iraq. A look at Dan Grant's web site will demonstrate that he also has big ideas, all with the primary purpose of making life better for the constituents of TX-10.

Finally, it seems as though you misunderstood the main point of Lorenzo Sadun's endorsement of Dan Grant. Mr. Sadun recognizes that the war in Iraq is one of the most important issues facing Texans and America today. When it comes to qualification in regards to this issue, I have no doubt that Dan Grant's 10 years of experience overseas, makes him not only the best qualified candidate in this race, but exceptionally qualified in this field...period.

A great democracy must be progressive or it will soon cease to be a great democracy.

29 press releases? (3.00 / 1)
seems a little much. i haven't seen any that stick in my mind on the evening news. maybe that tactic isn't working very well.

how many doors has he knocked?

how much money has he raised?

how many points does he garner in a scientific poll?

those are the only numbers that count in a campaign, especially one of this size.

experience overseas doesn't equal diplomatic knowledge, for one.

for two, no freshman is going to play any role whatsoever in resolving ANY international conflict...especially not Iraq.

i'm not saying Dan doesn't have the right plan or best ideas...i don't know.

i'm just saying, living overseas doesn't make someone madeline freaking albright.

You make some fair points... (4.33 / 3)
I do agree that overseas experience alone does not equal diplomatic experience, although having lived overseas myself, I will argue that it gives someone perspective. What does equal diplomatic experience is a Masters of Science in Government Affairs and Public Policy, coupled with practical application - two things Dan Grant has. For example:

Elections work in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo.

Coordination of security and policy planning in Afghanistan for their constitutional convention.

Elections work in Iraq. He also worked with international military forces and local leaders in Basra, Fallujah and Mosul.

So while Dan isn't Madeline Albright (yet, who knows - he could be someday), he is exceptionally qualified in the field of international relations. John Kerry must agree; he hired Dan as a foreign policy consultant during his 2004 presidetial campaign.

As for the numbers, I don't have them beyond the quarterly filings in which LJD and Dan had raised more or less the same amount. And yes, you are right, a freshman will probably not play a significant role in resolving international conflict. The thing is we live in an ever shrinking world, and it's my belief that Dan's skill sets are a better fit for leading America through those changes.

A great democracy must be progressive or it will soon cease to be a great democracy.

I only recall one press release from LJD... (0.00 / 0)
...and that was announcing his candidacy, where he listed his experience as an attorney and "host of a syndicated courtroom reality program" as his qualifications. Where's the beef?

Not many votes...but... (5.00 / 1)
Who would you vote for in the TX-10 Democratic primary to take on Rep. McCaul?
* Dan Grant - 55 votes (79.71%)
* Larry Joe Doherty - 14 votes (20.29%)

Total votes: 69
