Five Years Ago: "The Stephen Colbert House for Democratic Runaways"

by: Mark Duncan

"Yes, like so many runaways, Rodney is here to break a legislative quorum in the Texas legislature." - Stephen Colbert

Keeping in line with the great coverage this week on where Texas Democrats were five years ago and all the fallout from the GOP takeover in 2002, with a bit of levity, here's a story Stephen Colbert did as a correspondent for the Daily Show in 2003 on redistricting in Texas.

I was there... (3.00 / 1)
as Colbert, a whole bunch of union-scale technical pros, and at least one 18 wheeler worth of equipment rolled into the Albuquerque Pyramid Marriott to shoot that piece. It was stunning, the contrast between the huge budgets of entertainment department shows, and the scrimp-and-save budgets of the scores of broadcast news crews and trucks already there.  The shooting of the Daily Show piece was one of few really fun moments in a very long 45-day stay in Albuquerque.

I was so proud of the Senate Democrats for having the courage and resolve to stand up for what they believed in, but no one who wasn't there can understand how tough it was on everybody there. That said, there were a few moments that were big fun -- and that day was among them. Both Rodney Ellis and Leticia Van de Putte knew the resulting piece would be ridiculous and funny, and they've got the sense of humor to sustain a good laugh at their expense (but mostly at DeLay's), so a good time was had by all.

Behind the scenes fact: the interview segment between Van de Putte and Colbert took forever, because both of them, plus the crew, were all laughing so much it was producing unusable footage.
