Will the Real Ron Wilson Please Stand Up

by: Matt Glazer

Fri Nov 09, 2007 at 01:53 PM CST

Ron Wilson's request for a hand out continues to be suspect.  On October 27th, Phil reported that Wilson asked Rick Perry to appoint him as Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Wilson's bid for Commissioner is troubling.  Not because he supports Craddick's bid for total power.  Not because he was a top lieutenant in the push to institutionalize and fund vouchers in Texas.  The fact that DPS refuses to release video tapes that may show James Leininger on the House floors isn't the biggest issue either.  The problem is, you can tell a lot about a person by the company he keeps, and Wilson's friends don't seem like friends of the DPS.

Ron Wilson's client, friend, and rapper, Lil' Flip has something to say about public safety.

Lil Flip - I Got Flow
Cause I got flow, you know I got flow
If I ain't in your gal, I'm in the studio

Maybe that one isn't too bad.  How about…

Lil Flip- 7-1-3 (Remix)
I got a lot of girls, some of em give me head
Some of em give me bread, when my money get low
I use to fuck, one three days in a row
But she wouldn't let me drive her car
So I found me a bitch, with a Jaguar
Now I got, two herbs in mind
So don't try and jack, cause I'll burst a nine
That's one shot, two shot, three shot, fo'
And if you don't die, I'ma shoot five mo'
Yeah nigga, I'm on my grind
I'm just like Nas, I'm a mastermind
You got a plan, before you try to do something
Get a rubber, before you try to screw something
......
We can't forget Ron Wilson
He got the Lamborghini, you see it

Just for fun, here is another Lil Flip shout out to his boy Ron Wilson.

Lil Flip - We Blow Endo
Lil Flipper da Leprachun ak da Freestyle King
Sucka Free, Fuckin wit dat Ron-C on dat Dodo tshhh
Nigga ya'll blowin bull shit, Endo nigga dats what we blow

Maybe there is a different Ron Wilson with an Endo who represents a Houston rapper.  Actually, Mr. Wilson was a guest star in Lil Flip's music video, "This is the Way we Ball".

As a private citizen, Wilson has the right to do whatever he wants as long as it is within the bounds of the law. However, public servants are held to a higher standard. How can he be the commissioner of the Department of Public Safety while his friends and business partners are out there talking about shooting people on the streets, doing drugs, or screwing around?

Wilson has already shown a complete disregard for the rules.  Perry and Craddick continue to use cronyism to reward friends instead of considering actual qualifications. There is no reason Wilson should even be considered for this job.  Ever.

There he go, that nigga right there, he's a hoe
And I'm leave his white T-shirt wit a hole

I'll put him in a finger fold, don't fuck wit Flipper, hoe
I'm a kiss you wit a bullet, under a mistletoe

[Taz]

Call tha coroner, chalk him out, cause we done fucked this nigga

[Lil' Flip]

And ride wit Lil' Flip, cleanin' up on niggas
Droppin' bullets like rain, wettin' up yo niggas
Fuck you and everythang you love, hoe nigga

[Lil' Flip]
In conclusion, I'll empty out a full clip
You aint known for trampolines, but you gon do a full flip
And whatever you said, I'ma make you take it back
And if you chest get got, nigga I'ma make it flat
So you betta watch out before we run in yo house
And tie you up like tennis shoes, and put a gun in yo' mouth

[Chorus]

[Lil' Flip talkin']
For my dogz nigga, ya'll wonder why ya'll don't see me, cause I only chill

and having spent an inordinate amount of my time and money in highschool on mixtapes at various screwshops on Antoine and on Crosstimes @ Yale, I should mention that the shoutout to Ron C is not a reference to Wilson, but to OG Ron C, formerly of the SwishaHouse.

Nevertheless, awesome post.  Might want to mention Lil Flip's arrest for credit card fraud, or the lawsuit against him for breach of contract.  Here's his mugshot.  There was also the time he was shot.

Southside rappers suck anyway.

the 7-1-3 Remix was on the album Undaground Legend, released on 08/27/2002.  The song references Wilson's Lamborghini.  However, Wilson's Lamborghini has temporary tags and is a dealership car not for personal use.  He explains the temp tags by saying the car is brand new.  That's interesting, seeing how Lil Flip's been singing about it for 5 years.

Clearly I need to get a refresher course on the Houston rap scene.

Didn't Lil' Flip get in a gunfight in Houston with Atlanta rapper T.I.?

Okay... (1.00 / 2)
So I can't stand Ron Wilson more than any of you all--probably less.  I remember vividly the day that the Killer Ds went to Oklahoma, I went to the Capitol to see all the Republicans trapped in the House chamber.  I sat in the gallery for a few minutes, and I remember seeing Ron Wilson there and really wanting to throw something at him.  Alas, I didn't.

But this seems a bit over the line.  Becuase he is a successful attorney who represents artists from among the world's most vibrant popular music scenes--that of Houston's hip hop culture--who appreciate his services enough to give him a shout out is no reason to oppose him getting a certain job.  Should all attorneys who represent people with questionable backgrouds be dismissed from public service?  Then there won't be any lawyers in public service (not a bad idea, now that I write it down...).  It seems to me that your problem isn't that Wilson represents certain people of a particular charachter in his capacity as an attorney, but rather that these people are public figures in the hip hop game.  If it were a country artist who talked about shooting men in Reno just to watch them die, or a blues artist who talked about selling his soul to the devil would you be just as critical?  Or is it because hip hop is a revolutionary genre that takes pride in flauting social and civil norms established by wealthy White men without their input or consideration that you feel that it should be a blight on Wilson's character that he is involved in it?  Or is it just that you have after almost 5 years finally (at long last) come to the end of all the truly bad things you can say about Wilson that you now reach into non sequitors and slander of his clients?  Perhaps it is none of these.

I like Lil' Flip.  I like Chamillionaire.  I like Mike Jones and UGK and other Houston rappers.  I am especially excited to see the 214 finally get some respect with the Dirty South Rydaz (check out "Did I Stutter?").  Texans ought to be proud that in the musical movement of our times, the natural successor to the blues, jazz and rock and roll Texas is the epicenter of some of the most original and influential work being done in the genre.  Your post seems to me to represent the worst sort of anti-hip hop elitist bias.  There are plenty of reasons to oppose Ron Wilson.  Let's not besmirch the artists who happen to associate with him in the process of doing so.

Dobbs (5.00 / 2)
Your comment is more an unnecessary defense of the Houston rap scene more than it is Ron Wilson. None of us have any problem with rap music -- and we didn't speak ill of it at all in this post. But when this kind of controversial music enters the public political arena, yeah, we're going to call it into question. We did it with Kinky Friedman's jokes, and when Perry had Nugent play at his inauguration -- neither of whose defense you came to, by the way.

Considering you wrote about the "long overdue" death of Falwell just a day ago, I really don't think a tolerance comment is very credible coming from you.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

Missing the Point (5.00 / 2)
Ted Nugent can say and sing whatever he wants.  Kinky Friedman can say whatever he wants.  Lil Flip can say anything he wants.

The point is, when Ted Nugent is singing at Rick Perry's inauguration, then whatever he sings or does reflects on Rick Perry.

Kinky Friedman the musician is allowed to be as racist as he wants. Kinky Friedman the politician should not be allowed to refer to babies as "n*gger eggs".

Ron Wilson the attorney can represent and make money any way he wants.  Ron Wilson the House Assist Parliamentarian and possible Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety should denounce any "friends" who actively sing about killing people, drugs, or violence towards women.

This is about hypocrisy.  You can't make money from rappers who promote ideas contrary to public safety and then walk into work with any credibility.

If he wants this job he must denounce these lyric and fire them as clients otherwise he has the same credibility as Kinky and Perry.

Should a potential Commissioner of Public Safety be driving a Lamborghini (thanks for the link, Joe) without a permanent license plate, to boot?

ALL of this is very weird.

Wow (0.00 / 0)
Who knew a surf session on Houston hip hop could get so political?

As much as I love Flip, I'm not sure their lawyer should be running the Department of Public Safety.  I can see how Rick Perry would disagree, of course.  I didn't realize he was a fan, though he probably does break banks wit his dogz.

How does this work?  Doesn't the governor apppoint whoever he wants?

Jim
