A Letter from Bob

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Sat Mar 11, 2006 at 01:50 PM CST

This is a final request from Bob Gammage in what he wrote me just now.

If you think it is appropriate, please post the following for me.  It will be going out to my entire list of supporters very quickly, but there are a lot of your bloggers that I don't have addresses for.  I appreciate the forum you give to those who are interested and want to be involved.  It is important.  You are important.  They are important. -Bob Gammage

This is the end, and the official call to action to go forth and unite.  The primary and the rehashing is officially over- fresh coverage begins here. I think it's worth it to post Bob Gammage's last comments from his campaign. You can also read Bell's post-election post at his site here and you should go sign up for his campaign if you are not already on it.

We didn't win this race. We didn't win this time.

And just as surely we didn't lose, either -- in fact so much of what we accomplished together in a few short weeks feels like a lasting and important victory.

With little money and even less time, we roused a sleepy party and raised an amazing core of principled, passionate volunteers who lent their hard work and enthusiasm to advancing the best values of the Democratic Party.

I am in awe, I am humbled and I am forever thankful to the thousands of you who rose of your own accord and worked tirelessly at the difficult job of beginning to rebuild our state on the basis of timeless principles and honorable values.

We called on you to stand up for your beliefs and you did, as Democrats and Texans and Americans. The story of the Democratic Party, and of democracy itself, is fundamentally a story about people who stood up for their beliefs, lost some battles, stood up again and kept standing up, over and over, as many times as it took, until they triumphed.

Often in life, as well as in politics, victory is not about whether or not you are beaten. It is about whether or not you yield.

And this campaign -- which means all of you -- did not ever yield, even in the face of long odds, from the first day to the last hours of this race. You did not yield to apathy from the public and the media, and you did not yield to scorn from pundits or the partisans of other candidates.

Most important of all, none of us yielded to the temptation to hide the truth to gain popular appeal or political advantage.

Some of you have said I inspired you, but it really was the other way around.

It was all of you who inspired me every day of this campaign -- to run this race, to criss-cross this big state from border to border, and to fight every day to tell the people of Texas that Democrats are as passionate as they ever were and as committed as they always have been to their principles, their faith, their community, their state and their nation. Please keep delivering that message.

Through it all, you gave me and my family your truest gift of steadfast support and we are forever grateful for your efforts and your commitment. We will continue trying to earn it. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Respectfully,

Bob Gammage

To Victory in November.

A class act (5.00 / 2)
Bob Gammage does all Texans proud.

Thank You, Bob, for running (5.00 / 1)
You expressed my vision for the Democratic Party in Texas--a vision where we continue to fight for reform and for economic and social justice while working with available moderate Republicans (may their numbers increase) to solve problems brought about mainly by the rigid idealogue arrogance of the Republican right-wing, which has, in large part,  created the funding crisis for education in our state.

I'm a yellow-dog. I'll still "do my duty."  I'm also human.  Thus, the extent of my involvement and the verve with which I do so will be in direct proportion to the degree of commitment Chris Bell demonstrates to the vision you stood for.

And thank you (0.00 / 0)
Thank you for taking a second look and taking a look at the FEC and TEC campaign finance records and attempting to bring the obvious to everyone's attention.

Someone asked me over the weekend why I would support Kinky Friedman since he was a Republican. I pointed out that he was running as an Independent and not as a Republican, or a Democrat, and among other reasons, I didn't see any Republican money his campaign coffers but there was lots of that Republican money in Chris Bell's. She said she didn't believe it. So I directed her to the FEC and TEC websites and told her to look for herself. It is amazing how people just assume that a Democrat would only be supported by Democrats.  Equally amazing is their reaction when they find out that in fact that is not true. She will not vote for Bell either.

The money speaks for itself. And not just in Chris Bell's campaign finance records but in the campaign finance records of quite a few Democrats in this state.

Most Texas Democrats are "yellow dogs" or used to be and you have to ask yourself if you were running for public office if you would compromise your values by taking Republican money.  I don't know many who would. Why then don't they take that second look with regard to those who are running for office?

Is Kinky Friedman the perfect candiate who will be the perfect governor? Of course not.  But also serves no party and so far serves no special interest as reflected by his campaign finance records. Which may in the end be what gets him elected. He is interested in those who have no voice.  Which is most of us.  Many of the things he supports such as school prayer and the Ten Commandments are federal issues.  They are out of his control.  Until the legislature decides to give him that control. Even then they are moot until the Supreme Court rules whether they are constitutional or not. So far, the Supreme Court has been ruling on the side of the Constitution.  This is an  issue few are really looking at and should be.  The threat of the Republican agenda is far greater in the legislatures and in the Congress itself.  As we have seen in South Dakota.  The main basis of endorsement of Chris Bell by the newspapers seems to have been that he works well with Republicans. Thanks, but no thanks.

And thank you to Bob Gammage for rescuscitating a dying Democratic party in this state.  There are those who will support Chris Bell. There are those who will not. But I believe most who were inspired by Bob Gammage will put their focus now on the party itself and the importance of rebuilding the party itself in this state to the point that we can generate far more than just 4% of Democrats voting in a primary.

The 4% who voted in the primary is reflective of what? Overwhelming support of Chris Bell? If Gammage had won, the same question could be asked. It is reflective of a party whose members for one reason or another simply have given up. But also of many who just assumed their vote wouldn't matter. So they didn't bother to cast it.

Most of the people I have talked to who didn't vote in the primary are now saying they wish they had. Some assumed Bell would win anyway. Some assumed Gammage would win anyway.  Where you don't have apathy, you have assumptions that the individual vote doesn't count. It doesn't.  Until you add all the individual votes up. Then it, and they, do.

I think Bob Gammage reminded of us that most of all.

Bell (1.00 / 1)
Chris Bell, unfortunately, has no chance in hell of winning in the Texas Governors Race. He'll more than likely come in third. Perry wins and in 2008, Texas sits on the sidelines for another Presidential Election. But...If Strayhorn wins and Texas has an Independent Governor,a former Republican yes and also a former Democrat, Texas may actually have some say in a Presidential Election for the first time in a long time. It would be nice and a lot better than being a fly over state for the Dem candidate in '08. Again.

Thank you and Happy Birthday (3.00 / 1)
To you and Lynda, for all you've done, the past few months and the many years, we owe you a deep debt of gratitude.  You two are what I think of, when I think of DEMOCRAT!
The progressive grassroots at it's finest.

You and Lynda, kick back (for a tiny bit) and enjoy your birthday.
