Jim Dunnam: "The Enemy of My Friend is My Enemy"

by: Matt Glazer

Thu Oct 04, 2007 at 06:30 PM CDT

(This was written by House Democratic Leader Jim Dunnam, not by a staff writer of BOR. We continue to be proud of our Democratic leaders and look forward to a Democratic Speaker. - promoted by Matt Glazer)

Today, House Democrats stand at 70 seats strong.

No one predicted we would be this strong this fast. Not in 2001, when the Legislative Redistrict Board drew a map designed to elect 98 Republicans -- almost two-thirds of the Texas House. And not in 2002, when 88 Republicans were elected to the House.

I believe the secret to our success rests in our refusal to give up the hard fight for our constituents and our ability to work together. But as we get away from Austin, we don't always know what is going on with our Democratic House colleagues. If you don't know what's happening to our friends, you should.

Here's but one example:

Recently, Rep. Allen Vaught politely declined to meet with a potential opponent of Dan Branch. Allen explained that, in the greater interest of Dallas County, he did not think he should be personally involved in county House races. This is Allen's choice, and certainly understandable.

Imagine Allen's surprise when he received a copy of the invitation to former Rep. Bill Keffer's fundraiser this month. Of course, you can guess correctly that Linda Harper-Brown's name is on it; heck, she did the same against Republican incumbents during the 2006 primaries. But you might be surprised by some of the other host names: Joe Driver, Ken Paxton, Jim Jackson, and Jodie Laubenberg. Oh, and Rep. Dan Branch. But wait, you say, Joe Driver isn't like Harper-Brown? And Paxton has always treated other members with respect, hasn't he? And this is how Mr. Branch says thank you to Allen Vaught?

This is being duplicated across the state. These incidents are neither isolated nor uncalculated. We must recognize the great effort our Republican colleagues are making, as incumbent elected officials, to actively campaign against Democratic House members. We must understand that when our Republican colleagues go after one of us, they are going after all of us. You might be in a safe district and say to yourself, "Well, they are not coming after me," but the truth is that when they attack one of us, they attack all of us. Their goal is to weaken our collective voice by defeating us one by one.

(A must read, plenty more below the fold)

Everyone knows that Tom Craddick retained Arlene Wohlgemuth to recruit Republican primary challengers against incumbent Republican members. Arlene just recruited a 9/11 survivor of the Pentagon attack to move into Jim Keffer's district and set up residency. Everyone who served with Arlene is not surprised by her vicious targeting of fellow Republicans; but I wonder how her clients feel about this special project she has taken on for Craddick. Arlene's clients include Time Warner Telecom of Texas, the Texas Optometric Association, the Texas Hospital Association, the Texas Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the Texas Association of Community Health Centers, the Texas Association for Home Care, the Academy of Independent Pharmacists-Texas, eMedicalFiles Inc. and many more. Are Democratic members so expendable to these groups? Or are their real issues so unimportant that their contract employees have time to recruit against sitting legislators? Maybe Arlene's clients don't know what Arlene is doing, but shouldn't they know that they are indirectly subsidizing the recruitment of an opponent against Jim Keffer and other House members?

Craddick has also been personally busy. Craddick is repeatedly in Arlington personally recruiting against one of our incumbent Democrats. At the same time, Craddick is traveling the state talking to other Democratic House members trying to convince them he should be re-elected Speaker. With news like this, it's only fair to ask that, from now on, any Democrat with the slightest intention of supporting Craddick in 2009 must have the honesty and courage to publicly state so now? The past is the past, but the future will affect us all.

We tend to think it is only Jim Leininger or Tom Craddick, through his surrogates or directly, who are trying to defeat our colleagues. That is not true. In 2004 and 2006, it was Republican statewides like Patterson and Combs going in and hitting our incumbents. And this month it is Joe Driver, Florence Shapiro, Elizabeth Ames Jones, and other of our Republican House colleagues going after Allen Vaught. Who will it be tomorrow?

As long as we stand together, we will continue to move forward an agenda for a brighter Texas. So stay on top of what is going on with your Democratic House colleagues. Remember that what the Republicans are trying to do to them, they are doing to you.

Yes but ... (0.00 / 0)
In general, I agree with Dunnam here.  In fact, my first question to Wendy Davis, when I finally meet her, will be: What have you done and will you do to help elect other Democrats?

My only concern is the current events in Dallas.  It just doesn't look good, and I'm honestly worried about the effects it will have on both policy and politics.  I think we should start warming the same bus we threw William Jefferson under.

Thank you for this... (0.00 / 0)
... while we did know it was going on, we didn't know specifics.

Study in Contrast of two great servants ... (5.00 / 1)
What a great contrast in styles and personalities.  Most of you are familiar with Jim Dunnam and the great job he has been doing as a leader of our house of representatives and of the House Democratic Campaign Committee.

Not as many of you are familiar with Allen Vaught, a great American and a humble servant.  Nobody ever thought a Democrat could win the conservative White Rock Lake/Lake Highlands area of Dallas.  After all, District 107 is drawn 55%R and only 44%D.  But Allen's hard work, remarkable story of serving in Iraq with the Army Reserve as  the "de facto Mayor of Fallujah," and his reasonable and moderate policy positions took this very conservative district for the Democrats.

As a freshman, he fought hard for many Democrat positions, but also was a principled servant who demanded of himself and others to follow the many unwritten rules of civility.  He also fought hard against Craddick's parliamentary tactics.

However, as a reformed Republican, I can tell you that the fact that Allen is a Patriotic Veteran who has acted in a bi-partisan manner and as a moderate voice of sanity in the house is meaningless to the GOP members listed in Jim Dunnam's fine piece.  If you are not exactly like these persons, your patriotism and your sanity are in question.  Each of these GOPers, however nice in person, thinks you deserve to be voted out, whether you have a D or R next to your name, unless you are as conservative as he or she is.

It is clear that there is a long history of bipartisanship in the house that Craddick and his GOP cronies have tossed out like last night's dinner.  Unfortunately for them, this strategy has led to the defections of scores of GOP voters who see that the GOP has been taken over by the far right, the personality cult of loyalty, and corporate interests.

The problem is how do you fight with opponents who do not think the prior rules of civility apply to them?

From what I know of Allen, I am not surprised that he is sticking to who he is - a principled thinking man who will not bend his values to the newest wind of changed thrust on us by his opponents.  From what I know about Jim, I am not surprised that he is sticking to who he is - a straight talking fighter who wants to get to the results Texans demand.

While they both have different styles, I am glad they both give so much of themselves for our benefit.  And even though there is a lot of fight in Allen and a lot of thought in Jim, if we are to get beyond 70 democrats, we need to have some representatives that can be characterized as genuine thinkers and some that are genuine fighters.

We should be proud of both Allen and Jim.  We will need both of them and both of their styles to bring Texas back to sane and principled government.

Sincerely, Eric

Know Your Enemy (0.00 / 0)
In politics today, the one with the least respect for the rules makes the rules.  He or she sets the boundaries of behavior, that line that theoretically shouldn't be crossed.

Karl Rove and his ilk -- including Tom Craddick -- understand this.  It may even be their organizing principle.  They go to places we Democrats think we should not go.  They aren't brilliant; they're brazen.

Take, for instance, the truth.  If the facts don't support a charge, you don't say it, right?  Wrong.  In a Rove world, it's not about what the truth is; it's about what people will swallow and ultimately believe.

Now, I'm mot advocating that we throw our moral compass out the window and adopt Rove's amorality.  I am saying that we need to understand how they operate and exploit the inherent weaknesses of their scheme.

We need to pound them -- early and often -- for their lies, failures and scandals.  We need to consistently show how they work for an elite few and ignore the needs of everyone else.

Which is pretty much what Dunnam, Coleman, Gallego and all the other HDCC members have done over the last few years.  Despite the money and power disadvantage, they've played a big role in helping good Democrats -- such as Allen Vaught -- win their races.  I see more victories in the future.
