Kudos to our House Democratic Leaders

by: Matt Glazer

Fri Sep 21, 2007 at 04:00 PM CDT

When we are fortunate enough to score a touchdown we usually subscribe to the theory of "act like you've been there", rather than dancing like an idiot.  However, I think it's important for us to stop for a second and take inventory regarding just how far the House Democratic Caucus has come since 2003.

In 2003, after Tom DeLay's illegally laundered TRMPAC money financed the Republican takeover of the Texas House and the ascension of Tom Craddick to the absolute pinnacle of power, Democrats were bruised, battered, and paralyzed by a 13-seat deficit in the Texas House.  The partisan make-up of the house was 62-D and 88-R.  For those who were around, it was an accomplishment for the D's to hold 40 votes on anything.

After the courageous and historic party switch of Kirk England this week, House Democrats have shrunk that deficit from 13 to a mere 5 seats.  No one deserves more credit for these significant accomplishments than the Leader of the House Democratic Caucus, Jim Dunnam.

When the Caucus was at the lowest point in its history, Representative Dunnam stepped up to the plate and accepted the challenge.  No one, friend or foe, can argue with his results.

After pulling of the impossible (Ardmore), Reps. Dunnam, Gallego, and Coleman formed the House Democratic Campaign Committee (HDCC).  During the 2004 elections, House Democrats netted 1 seat in the House by knocking off Craddick's Chair of House Appropriations, Talmadge Heflin.  In 2006, House Democrats had unprecedented success by picking up 6 seats; 5 on election-day and 1 during a special election to fill Todd Baxter's old seat.

This past week, after months of persistent and skillful negotiations, Mr. Dunnam and other House Democrats pulled off the impossible by convincing a Republican State Rep. (Kirk England) to switch parties and run as a Democrat.

After years of hard work by many folks, we are now only 6 seats away from electing a Democratic Speaker and moving Texas forward.  Every step of the way, no one has shown more skill or courage in taking on Tom Craddick and his corrupt right-wing cronies than our fearless House Democratic leaders; Dunnam, Gallego, Coleman, Hochberg, Thompson, and the other good Democrats in the Texas House.

Since Rep. Dunnam chooses not to dance in the end zone, we thought we'd do it for him.  Thanks for all that you've done for Democrats in Texas, and go win us 6 more seats next November!

The Dem Caucus in the Lege (5.00 / 1)
has indeed come a long way.

It took a little time to adjust to the decimation of the traditional bipartisan colleaguality of the Texas Legislature.  I know it's not come without cost to every member-on both sides of the aisle.

I hope we will be able to see that tradition revived, but it is necessary to fight now on the ground we have-and take back every stolen inch from a moralistic and autocratic Republican leadership.

Rep. England stated a simply demonstrated truth when he said that the Republican leadership makes the members vote against the interests of their districts.  That will continue until it costs them.

Relentlessly.

Sorry if that seems less celebratory and more partisan than you'd like, Matt.

Before you win, you have to fight. Come fight along with us at TexasKaos.

Todd Smith (0.00 / 0)
I think there is potential for Todd Smith to be honest with you.  If Kirk England can switch so too can Todd Smith.  He is rather moderate and has been since he has been in Austin.  Democrats and Republicans alike up here in HD 92, encompassing Mid-Cities and parts of West Grand Prairie, praise him.

His record is almost identical with England.  And he knows that the Mid-Cities Democrats are out there, hunting him, questioning him, and more.  Craddick is trying to get a primary opponent against him as well, and has been for years.

He'd be someone I'd be happy to see switch sides.

Todd

Tommy Merritt too (0.00 / 0)
I'd love to see Tommy make the jump. The GOP has smeared him every chance they've gotten -- and I have a hunch they will try to primary him again this year.

I'm very progressive, but I think I could get behind Merritt in a Dem primary.

John McCain is not a moderate.

Smith Switch (0.00 / 0)
I generally agree with you on Todd Smith.  The fact that he sponsored HB1919 earned him my praise too.  I'm much more inclined to go after Zedler and Patrick, since they voted against it.  However, if Todd Smith were to switch today, then he would have the biggest Republican bullseye on him.  Even though I think MCD does a great job, I think you all and Smith would have a really hard time keeping that seat Democratic in 2008.  However, maybe in a few years after MCD and others have pushed the DPI further, then a Smith switch might be more reasonable.

Todd Smith needs a poll to have an opinion (0.00 / 0)
Personally, I'm getting sick of DINO's. I'd rather have real Democrats running for office. The one time I met Todd Smith in person, and asked him point blank if he supported toll roads, and the sellout of public infrastructure for private profiteering, he said point-blank that polls he'd seen have swayed both ways, so he didn't know where he stood on the issue. He very much struck me as a political opportunist who will say what he needs to in order to get elected. I don't know anything about Kirk England, except the small amount of research I did after his announcement. I will have a few questions before I give my support, like what his bill exempting fines for certain GPAC's was all about. All the good Democrats out there need to say enough is enough... if you give money to Republican campaigns, or support eminent domain abuse (Trinity River vision), or vote to back foreign ownership of our freeways, or other REPUBLICAN agenda items, you're NOT a real Democrat and you don't deserve our support.

The point... (0.00 / 0)
Is that his constituents like him and that is why they continue to elect him. Legislators should be able to represent their districts without having Craddick in their faces everyday.

Get over yourself (0.00 / 0)
I have tried to hold my tongue over all this blather but enough is enough.

The people who keep posting under pseudonyms about how they know what is best for the Democratic Party in Texas while decapitating anyone who dares to return from the GOP need to get their meds adjusted.

No GOP state rep is perfect but neither are any of the Democrats.  They are human beings, pure and simple, and guess what?  Each of them will disagree with you on some policy issue at some point in time.

If you want someone else to represent HD 106 in Austin then work for that end.  Otherwise, please quit smearing the people who have turned their personal lives upside down for the privilege of serving their communities in the state Legislature, regardless of which party they are or were a member of.

Todd...The point...Get over yourself (0.00 / 0)
I didn't realize until now that part of this thread was getting down to the 106th, but hey! It is a beautiful discovery. As for Kirk England, the man was already a successful business man before running for the 106th which essentially pays nothing. This combined with the fact that I don't doubt the genuineness of his ability to notice the obvious dysfunctionality of the Texas GOP, leads me to accept his party switch at face value.  Of course he IS the first Republican in over 14 years to win that district with less than a majority, but then I don't doubt the authenticity of political necessity either. I personally have some issues with his votes in the Legislature which I plan to question him about . . . apparently he was on the wrong side of the voter suppression bills despite some crumbs he tossed to seniors on that issue. Anyway I still like him better as a Democrat than as a Republican, so Hooray! No need to get too agitated about it before we know the whole primary picture, so let's keep on celebrating . . . for a while at least :)

If you still gotta vent, however, I've started my own public BOR journal for these things one way or another.

Take it easy. We've got time to digest it all.

Thank you Jim Dunnam (5.00 / 1)
Great post Matt - I couldn't have said it any better myself.  We all owe Jim Dunnam a debt of gratitude...

Thanks (0.00 / 0)

Delwin Jones (0.00 / 0)
I hope the caucus is focused on flipping Delwin Jones. He used to be one of us. The Republicans hate him.

Let's get the caucus and Speaker Laney to work on bring Delwin back home where he belongs.

Command performance (5.00 / 3)
This is long overdue praise. The post doesn't mention much about his legislative actions, so I just want to add a thank you to the man who stood at the back mic in the Texas House and took on Tom Craddick night after night, while others watched in support but never approached to speak out.

I am most fond of the famous exchange where Craddick claims to follow House rules. Dunnam's one word answer sends the House into cheers - "When?"
