Burns to Run in Vacant Cowtown Council Seat

by: Todd Hill

Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 11:54 AM CDT

Joel Burns, an openly and unabashed gay man, proud Democrat, and current Commissioner for Zoning in Fort Worth District 9, announced last night at the Tarrant County Stonewall Democrats meeting that he will be running for the vacant District 9 council seat opened up by the Wendy Davis resignation.

This marks a historic moment for not only Fort Worth politics, but Tarrant County politics as well, considering no open member of the LGBT community has so proudly run for public office.  It was an exciting and proud moment for those of us who share Joel’s pride in not only being gay, but also announcing a run for higher office too.

Check out Joel’s website and be prepared to chip in some change to help him make important history.

In other news, sounds like tonight’s CEC meeting could be full of exciting political drama centered around the SD 10 race.  Look for a report tomorrow about all the happenings.

Stay tuned…..As Tarrant County Turns will continue.

Good for Joel! (0.00 / 0)
I don't live in Fort Worth anymore, but if I did I would fully support this guy.  He was one of the repsonsible politicos I metin Fort Worth. He would be great for the city.

Open and Proud (0.00 / 0)
I guess it depends on your definition of open and proud, but don't forget that Louis McBee ran for council and then for mayor. He didn't trumpet his orientation, but never hid it either.  The problem with being "open and proud" in Tarrant County is that the Star-Telegram under bigot-in-chief Wesley Turner will trash any gay who has the balls to stick his head above the line of fire.

Oh well... (0.00 / 0)
It's not like you can keep it in the closet.  I admire Joel for openly embracing his sexuality because it's not what defines him. I'm aware of McBee, but he didn't embrace his sexuality.

What defines him instead is his experience serving the voters of District 9.  He is, so far, the most qualified candidate for the position.  Sexual orientation aside, he's the right man for the job.

It's a tough hill to climb regardless, but good for him for giving it his best shot.

And I would also suggest that if Turner and the Star-Telegram does trash Joel that you take a page (literally) from Jim Wright and purchase a full page ad taking them on.  Don't let bigotry go uncontested.  Call a spade a spade.

RE: Alert! Republican Consultant running for FW City Council Dist 9 (0.00 / 0)
GOP Campaign Consultant Chris Turner is running for Fort Worth City Council District 9.  Fort Worth proper votes Democrat.  We do not need another Republican voice in Fort Worth politics.  Turner probably plans to take advantage of the efforts of Republicans in HD 97, which overlaps with FW Council Ditrict 9.

Democrats should beware of Turner's candidacy.
