Senate Democratic Primary Making National Rounds

by: Todd Hill

Tue Jul 10, 2007 at 10:04 AM CDT

Aaron Blake of the The Hill wrote a detailed article about our emerging Democratic primary contest, focusing mostly on the money Mikal Watts raised, which Blake notes here:

Watts raised about as much as incumbents such as Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Mary Landrieu (D-La.), who are up for reelection in 2008, in about a third of the time. His total even outpaces comedian Al Franken’s (D) first quarter, in which the former “Saturday Night Live” actor and Minnesota Senate candidate raised $1.4 million in 45 days.

The Hill didn’t ignore Noriega by any means, noting his solid experience and knowledge related to at least two of the top political hot potatoes in border security and national security.  Watts fundraising pace also opened the door for Noriega to take a minor jab:

“I think that was to be expected based on his business associates,” Noriega said. “He’s done a lot of referral work as a trial attorney, and so I think that’s just some owe-me’s coming back to him.”

On the heels of the Wall Street Journal article about the GOP losing its grip on Texas, it is quite clear our little senate race here in Texas is going to get national spotlight.  Watts is proving to be a formidable fundraiser, even outpacing incumbent senators up for re-election, which is quite impressive.

Noriega has stellar credentials and a Hispanic surname in a majority-minority state.  Again, impressive in of itself but he is obviously feeling the pressure from Watts to quickly get started, even forgoing the formal “exploratory process.”

How can Democrats not be excited about the potential we have to pick up a United States senate seat in the Lone Star State?  Moreover, for Texas Democrats, this simply marks the continued political pendulum swinging in our favor.

My hope is that our senate primary doesn’t get too contentious so as to allow our candidate to emerge relatively unscathed; forcing Cornyn to spend his own money to do opposition research.

C'mon Todd.  You know better.  It read like Sean Hannity wrote the header.

I never thought I would live long enough to be compared to Sean Hannity.  Can we say, overly dramatic?

Nitpick-
Defined as overly critical or to criticize minor details.

Seems that would apply here.

Don't adopt their language (0.00 / 0)
http://en.wikipedia...._(phrase)

Democrat Party is a political epithet used in the United States by some conservative commentators and by some members of the Republican Party in speeches and press releases instead of the name (or more precisely, the proper noun) Democratic Party.

Many members of the Democratic Party object to the term. New Yorker commentator Hendrik Hertzberg wrote: "There’s no great mystery about the motives behind this deliberate misnaming. 'Democrat Party' is a slur, or intended to be - a handy way to express contempt. Aesthetic judgments are subjective, of course, but 'Democrat Party' is jarring verging on ugly. It fairly screams 'rat.'"[1]

As you lecture me about not adopting "their language," you feel the need to adopt the tried and true tactic of tear your own apart.

Comparing me to Sean Hannity is ridiculous.

Thanks for pointing out your opinion and I'll be more careful in the future.

Now I would suggest instead of being overly dramatic in making your opinion, a simple "heads up" will do just fine in the future.

"It read like Sean Hannity wrote the header."

I did not compare you to Sean Hannity (although you two look similar around the eyes ... lol)  I pointed out that it was language similar to what the Right-wingers use when describing the "Democrat Party."

I was not being dramatic, just annoyed at reading that on a Democratic website from someone who certainly knows better.  Not that big a deal.

A simple "Oh yeah, oops." would have sufficed.  Get that Sean?  just kidding.

I hate to see Noriega and Watts going after each other already. (0.00 / 0)
How much of Watts'money is his own?

Junior John voted against the immigration measure that could grant legalization to the estimated 12 million unlawful immigrants if they pass background checks and pay fines and fees. It also would toughen border security and institute a new system for weeding out illegal immigrants from workplaces.
