Watts, Noriega, Reichstadt and.....Montford Too?

by: Todd Hill

Mon Jul 09, 2007 at 11:00 AM CDT

The Texas Political Resource Page is reporting that former Lubbock district attorny, state senator, AT&T Executive, as well as Texas Tech Chancellor John T. Montford is mulling a plunge into the Democratic primary for the US Senate.

Montford previously was rumored to be the candidate in 1996 to take on Republican Phil Gramm but decided against it at that time.  It would appear he might feel the climate is better with Cornyn being a wounded candidate heading into re-election.

Montford lives in San Antonio and attended the Mikal Watts $1.1 million dollar fundraiser for the DSCC a few months back.

Friends here in the Mid-Cities who know family members of John Montford are checking on the validity of these rumors, but if it is true, the former state senator would be a well funded and formidable candidate.

There are 254 counties in Texas so as the primary field continues to allegedly grow, if indeed Montford jumps in, then we could see some positive and intense political grassroots activity all over the state.

Watts reported raising over $1.1m in the second quarter.

I don't know how much of the second quarter he was actually working on fundraising...but an impressive showing, anyhow.

Noriega will not have to file any paperwork until he is no longer "testing the waters".

The next FEC compliance reports are due out in October.

Will someone please (5.00 / 1)
whisper to Sen. Montford that he would be a shoe-in for Lt. Governor in 2010?

Agreed (5.00 / 1)
And why do so many qualified politicians avoid running for Lt. Governor?  It is the most powerful position to hold in Texas state government.  Wasn't like Dewhurst was a shining star.

really, Montford? (0.00 / 0)
I thought he was President of ATT...not just an executive. None of the rumor mills in SA that I'm aware of are spreading this. Your NorTex sources may be better tuned in to what he is planning.

Would make it very interesting.  He did great things in the State Senate and moved heaven and earth at TxTech.

He's been out of it so long that it might not really get folks excited about his entrance into the race.

As I recall, he retired with a lot of money in his account, but wouldn't be able to use any of that on a federal race.

If it is true.

Agree Montford would be great as Lt. Gov, but wouldn't mind seeing him make a run for the Senate either.

Disclosure: I am a Texas Tech grad.

Montford rumor is false (0.00 / 0)
It has cropped up before but was just as phony then.  His contract with ATT has severe financial penalties for early retirement.  He has told those who bother to ask that he enjoys seeing his name in print but isn't running.

Why not run for Lt. Gov.? The pay is lousy (0.00 / 0)
It's my understanding the pay for the Lt. Gov. is the same as it is for legislators: $7,200 per year.

And so? (0.00 / 0)
Montford, and most other candidates, have hundreds of thousands..if not millions (Watts) in the bank.

They don't run for the pay they run for the power and influence of the position.

That is why most legislators in Austin are doctors, lawyers, and business owners.  They are generally the only one who can afford to run for office, and the only ones' who can afford a salary of $7200.

This, of course, doesn't mention the perks they get either.

The more candidates the better. If this primary gets heated, it could draw national attention. This is the last thing a vulnerable Cornyn wants.

Another thought... (0.00 / 0)
Speculation of another Republican jumping in to challenge Cornyn in the primary is circulating.  Did anyone notice that Cornyn ran to the local news coverage to show that he was trying to help flood victims?  Coincidentally, Dewhurst went to “survey” the damage just before Cornyn’s big press push?  The rumor mill is percolating and something of this magnitude may not be far off.

It's not a good sign (0.00 / 0)
that I have never heard of Montford.

And you heard of Watts prior to his entrance in the race?

Montford is probably better known than Noriega.
