Low Turnout

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Tue Mar 07, 2006 at 03:15 PM CST

Looks like we're headed for one of the lowest turnout primaries in Texas in a decade.  The Statesman has a morning report.

New electronic voting machines in Caldwell County might provide the most excitement in Central Texas on this primary election day.

Election officials there as well as in Travis, Williamson and Hays counties reported slow, uneventful mornings at area polling places.

Except for a few no-show election volunteers, Travis County Clerk Dana DeBeauvoir voting has gone remarkably smoothly.

The Secretary of State projected 13% overall turnout for both primaries. I think that's high and would project more like 10% and it's (as we have already seen), going to be regionally based. For Republicans it's going to be the Leininger 5 districts, SBOE, and SD-7-like areas.  For Democrats, it's the SD-19/CD-28 triangle between Laredo, San Antonio, and El Paso.

I'd project maybe 15,000 votes to be cast here in Travis County today giving us around 23,000 total votes, down from 44,000 in 2004.  Statewide, me bets are on a Dem turnout between 500,000 and 600,000 total votes.

The big question is who will win the next Champion of the Republic award for voter turnout? Is this election even one in which they are awarded?

(If you'd like to see a picture of Gammage with UDems last night, check the extended entry. I'm holding up the left side of the banner in yellow.)

Trei sent me this link of a new sign we are seeing a lot of in San Antonio.

This is the newest in a series of Cuellar Campaign signs if he wins.

Just to give blog props where they're due - I picked that up off a Swing State Project post.

UID 8 suckas.

Yeah (0.00 / 0)
the whole "Half of Democrats not being unable to identify Bell or Gammage" thing hampers turnout a bit.

Bell's probably going to get a victory margin from Harris County.

Because Houston Dem's love him... (0.00 / 0)
Not.

I think everyone remembers the stunts he pulled during the 2001 Mayoral election against Brown. That created many hard feelings in this city. Especially in the minority communities.

Combine what he did, with his votes on taxes, the Iraq War, ANWAR and a host of other issues, and you will see why I don't buy  the "Chris Bell: Progressive" line.

While Bob Gammage is older than Chris Bell, he has the experience of about 30 years of public service at the state and federal level. He knows how to run a state, and clean up a state.

I'm not really endorsing Bell (0.00 / 0)
But while Bell's name recognition is around 30% in most of the state, it's much higher in Houston.

(Yes, he doesn't deserve a clap for that)

But then again, Texas primaries are not known for being predictable, right?

Keeping in mind... (0.00 / 0)
That my preceint is in South Motgomery county, the democratic turnout today has been absymal. 12...12...Twelve...Doce... democrats have voted in the primary today.

Out of the 10,000 early votes (I think that was for all of south county), 800 of them were Democrats. Pathetic.

Oh well...

my parents still (0.00 / 0)
have to vote in South Montgomery County, but they're voting Bell. I bet you know them if you're a SoMoCo Dem, they're standby precinct chairs.

my prediction... (0.00 / 0)
The highest turnout will be in Plano TX! Why? I dont know it just sounded good. And Plano is easy to pick on.
