Maxey vs. Wells Spears - Glen says he's in

by: sonia

Mon Jul 02, 2007 at 10:10 AM CDT

Glen Maxey is running for tax assessor-collector and voter registrar for Travis and we haven't even mentioned it here on BOR.  I can see Glen not starting the thread, but no reason someone else can't.  I think it's great news!

Austin Chronicle Campaign Buzz: June 29, 2007
In declaring for the race, Maxey is taking on 16-year incumbent Nelda Wells Spears, who had been rumored to be considering retirement. Asked Monday whether she's running for re-election for another four-year term, Wells Spears responded simply, "Yes, I am." She said she has "several projects in the works" that she wants to see to completion, citing specifically a computer-imaging system for records retrieval still in development that will "smooth the work flow," as well as additional training programs for employees. "We don't get many complaints about our public service," she adds, "but one is too many."

In his initial statements, Maxey has emphasized the full title of the office – tax assessor-collector and voter registrar – because in addition to its tax functions, the office is responsible for countywide voter registration. "There are basically four functions in the office," said Maxey – taxes, fees and fines, vehicle titling and registration, and voters' registration – and he describes its current operations as "fairly efficient but not being used to its potential," especially concerning voter outreach and registration. "We're not using the power of the office to achieve 100-percent registration of eligible voters," he said.

Amen to that Glen.  Lets kick it up!

Vehicle Titling and Registration (0.00 / 0)
If you win Glen, I worked 3 years for a fortune 500 companies Lien Perfection department, which was responsible for vehicle titling and registration for the entire companies portfolio.  I'm still with the company just different department

That coupled with my political background might could lend me a job if you win?  :)

I don't understand (1.00 / 3)
Why Glen Maxey is targeting one of the few Latinas elected in Austin, Travis County, who, by all accounts, is a good Democrat and excellent at her job.  I am afraid he'd use the office of Tax-Assessor collector for his own benefit - access to the voter file. Isn't that the reason he ran for TDP chair? It's also well known that Glen has alot of personal debt and he is looking for ways to erase it. I don't trust Glen Maxey. I think people should stop and think before jumping on his bandwagon.

I'm an open book.... (4.50 / 4)
Let me answer these charges directly.

“Why Glen Maxey is targeting one of the few Latinas elected in Austin, Travis County, who, by all accounts, is a good Democrat and excellent at her job. “

First, Nelda Wells Spears is not Latina.  Ms. Spears had told many people that she was retiring at the end of this term.  I made a decision to run for this office based on that.  She’s now decided to seek re-election.  Primary campaigns are about discussions of the vision of candidates for office.  Over the next months, we’ll have that discussion.

“I am afraid he'd use the office of Tax-Assessor collector for his own benefit - access to the voter file.”

The Tax Assessor-Collector maintains the voter registration file of the County.  It’s a public record, and as a political consultant, I’ve maintained a voter registration database for campaigns.  You can go to the TAC office and buy the entire file for $74.00.  I’d hardly be running for a four year term just to get at access to a file that you’d still have to pay the same amount of money to obtain.  Personal use of public issues is a crime.

“Isn't that the reason he ran for TDP chair?”

No, and that a ridiculous charge.  I ran for TDP chair for the reasons articulated in a very public campaign: to rebuild the Texas Democratic Party and elect good Democrats to office.

“It's also well known that Glen has alot of personal debt and he is looking for ways to erase it.”

I hold no more personal debt than the average person.  Moreover, since retiring from the Legislature, I have earned as much or more yearly through my consulting contracts than what this office pays.  So ultimately, that isn’t the reason.  The gossip about my personal finances probably stems from the much publicized fact that I personally have paid the medical and other costs of a friend with many problems.  That person is no longer in my care.  I have worked very hard to pay for his care, and I’m proud to say that I expect to actually be completely debt free other than my basic living expenses and car payment by the time I’d take office in 2009.

And to be perfectly clear about my debts... (5.00 / 1)
My entire debt, including credit cards, car note, tax liabiliites, and loans at the bank to pay for medical treatment totals $93,763.00.  My mom just passed away in February, and when her property is sold by summer's end and I pay off a chunk of my loans and credit cards , I'll owe a whopping $50,000 or so.

I hope that satisfies anyone's interest in my financial situation.

Latina/o shouldnt equal free pass (5.00 / 2)
why ya gotta bring race into it?
why use a word like 'target'?
come on, who doesnt have debt?
and who doesnt want a job doing what they like, that pays well, and serves many?

i have nothing against the current TAC, yes i do know Glen quite well, AND i believe in the democratic process, and a clean competition ON THE MERITS.

if you bring up race as your firstpoint, i have to conclude you dont believe in a clean democratic competition, but that hispanics can only be in the office because of the color of the skin. as a hispanic guy that offends the heck out of me.

do i have to go into detail as to why that belief is super-problematic, for everyone?

(and for the record, glen didnt run for TDP chair solely for access to the voter file. that data is available, for not much money, to anyone and everyone. spending your money to get an unpaid job that provides access would be a silly silly strategy. for less than the cost of that campaign you can easily buy that data straight out! just saying...)

so, lets not fight, and i really am not trying to sway you to choose glen, but lets agree to leave race out of it, and focus on vision, strategy, plans, and the like.

That, and Nelda is African American (5.00 / 1)
That's not taking sides (I'm not), that's just pointing out a fact. =)

I agree with Mario on this (5.00 / 1)
I'm a Latina. Nelda Wells Spears is not a Latina, she's an African-American.  She's doing a good enough job. We have elections to periodically shake things up.  No elected official is guaranteed any position for life so long as the voters decide.  If Glen connects with the voters and offers something they feel worthy then he gets elected.  It's that simple.  It's not a reflection on the service that Nelda Wells Spears has performed to date.

It reminds me of the Barrientos/Watson situation frankly.  Senator Barrientos I think knew it was time to move on and let someone else start fresh representing that part of Travis in the Texas Senate.  There had been retirement rumors for a while. If Nelda is similarly thinking about retiring, I think this would be a good time to let someone who will bring in a fresh perspective.  And I think Glen would be an excellent TAC.

Race is already on the minds of some... (5.00 / 2)
And it has been for a long time because it is Glen's fault that minorities in Travis don't vote.  Remember EAI and TCCC '06 and those wonderful meetings with our minority electeds?  I mean that campaign is over and most everyone got what they wanted, but there are still individuals (even those working for the current TAC) inferring that Glen is a racist (e.g., he's targeting an older African-American grandma; he holds the purse strings and chokes East Austin; he said minorities in East Austin don't vote, etc.).

How long do we have to hear this?

I will take every chance I get to ask:  when are the minority electeds in our community going to take responsibility for their positions and show some leadership and stop blaming Glen?

[ Parent ]
hmmm (0.00 / 0)
I don't think attacking minority leaders is going to help Glen at all.

Who are your sources? I haven't heard anyone in East Austin call Glen a racist.

Please refer to KT's signature.

Infer - to guess, suggest, hint... (0.00 / 0)
Were you in attendance at any of the EAI meetings?

I am not attacking; I am simply asking the elected officials that represent me to use their positions as leaders to guide our community instead of blaming Glen for certain electoral shortcomings of a certain demographic (of which I am an active partcipant).

didn't have to be (0.00 / 0)
The tone of your post was a little harsh..."wonderful meetings"...minorities "should take responsibility"..."people are calling Glen a racist".

Your tone was way harsh considering that Glen is trying to gain support in East Austin and you're stirring the pot and ranting at the very leaders he's trying to get to!

If you have names, name them.  I haven't heard one single person call him a racist.

It's hard to tell if your straw man was built to help Glen or hurt him.

Please refer to KT's signature.

You are right. I was harsh. (0.00 / 0)
Please ask the TCDP Chair or staff, former TCCC campaign manager, 3rd Court of Appeals candidate, the County Attorney, the ADA, Councilmember Martinez, the staffs of former Sen. Barrientos or Rep. Rodriguez, or the campaign manager for the current TAC who inferred what...

I would just like to reiterate that I believe there is a leadership vacuum in East Austin and I am waiting for our representatives to step up to the plate - I don't care what color they are.
