The Progressive Majority: On Immigration

by: David Brock

Mon Jun 25, 2007 at 04:00 PM CDT

How many times have you heard in the media that America is a conservative country and becoming more conservative every day? It's a claim that has been repeated so often by the media, it's become conventional wisdom. Well, Media Matters for America and the Campaign for America's Future have examined 20 years of independent, nonpartisan polling data to prove that this claim is FALSE.

In our new joint report -- "The Progressive Majority: Why a Conservative America is a Myth" -- we disprove the assumption that Americans are overwhelmingly conservative and demonstrate that, in contrast to the conventional wisdom that Americans are overwhelmingly conservative, a majority of Americans agree with progressives on issue after issue and have for decades.

One area we cover in our report is on immigration. Here are some of our key findings:

•Two-thirds of Americans feel that “on the whole” immigration is a “good thing for the country today.”

•57 percent of Americans feel “most recent immigrants to the U.S. contribute to this country” rather than “cause problems.”

•More than five times as many Americans (49 percent vs. 9 percent) believe penalizing employers is the best way to reduce illegal immigration than building more fences.

Despite the perception given by the media, Americans do hold progressive positions on immigration, among many other issues. The independent, non-partisan polling data -- gathered over the course of 20 years by sources such as American National Election Studies, the General Social Survey, and Gallup -- speaks for itself.

In our report, we examined not only the top-level conclusions, but the underlying questions asked in each of the surveys. You can click here to view our full findings, complete with supporting materials.

I urge you to let your friends, family and colleagues know about our report. We have an easy way to do that here on our website.

By spreading the word, you can help expose the myth that we live in a conservative America and show people -- by using the facts -- that you truly are among America’s progressive majority.

That is a really great and hopeful study. I hope the Texas numbers (0.00 / 0)
aren't very different from the national numbers.

The Baptist are going to help too (0.00 / 0)
I saw this story this morning and was surprised.  I hope they mean it and will do the right thing.

Baptists announce national immigration effort
Church program will help immigrants seek citizenship

Citing a biblical obligation to speak on behalf of the stranger, Texas Baptist leaders will announce today the creation of a national initiative that will train churches to provide legal assistance to immigrants seeking citizenship.

The Baptist General Convention of Texas, which represents 5,600 congregations and 2.3 million Baptists, and Buckner International, a Baptist ministry that helps at-risk children, have joined to create the Immigration Service and Aid Center, or ISAAC.

The national initiative, which will be open to all denominations, is the first of its kind for a local church-based ministry that aids immigrants in becoming U.S. citizens, leaders say.

The idea grew out of the Baptist Immigration Services Network led over the past year by Suzii Paynter, director of the state convention's Christian Life Commission. That program has helped churches gain accreditation from the government and provided the legal training required to assist immigrants with forms and representation in immigration court.

The announcement comes as Convención Baptista Hispana, the largest gathering of Hispanic Baptists in the United States, meets in Austin this week.

The Progressive Majority: On Immigration (0.00 / 0)
An excellent report on the whole showing the Neocons have been lying about Americans position on Immigration. The majority favor Legal Immigration and recognize the benefits its brought to our Country.

But the Immigration figures used are for Legal Immigration mostly, only a few pertain to Illegal Immigration. We need to be careful not to claim that a majority of Americans support Illegal Immigration when they clearly do not.
