HOUSTON: Vote For Melissa Noriega

by: RandySF

Fri May 11, 2007 at 02:53 PM CDT

(Get out there Houston...or else we *will* have a problem. ;) - promoted by KT)

Tomorrow, the people of Houston can drive a nail in the coffin of the Tom Delay era. Melissa Noriega, wife of State Representative and potential Senate candidate Rick Noriega, is running for the at-large Houston City Council seat vacated by Shelley Sekula Gibbs when temporarily filled Delay's Congressional seat. Now, I am sure some of you wonder what credentials she holds other than her last name, I can assure you they are abundant.

The Chronicle endorses Melissa Noriega, a candidate with a diverse range of useful experience and a demonstrated commitment to learning, and solving, Houstonians' needs.

Noriega, who grew up in Austin and Houston, has a master's degree from the University of Houston College of Education. She worked for 27 years in HISD, in roles including administration, research and initiatives to increase community involvement.

Two years ago, Noriega shot into the Texas spotlight. Her husband, state Rep. Rick Noriega, is a lieutenant colonel in the Texas Army National Guard and in June 2004 was deployed to Afghanistan. Melissa Noriega stepped down from her job to take his place in the Legislature. She served with aplomb, sitting on the Defense Affairs and State and Federal Relations Committee, as well as the Corrections Committee. Her colleagues awarded her the Joe E. Moreno Public Service Award....

Noriega is especially attuned to the needs of Houston's poor and fragile. While Rep. Noriega was out of the city, she monitored developments in his district, at one point visiting a complex where a house fire had killed three children.

She found a physically and emotionally devastated community that had gone without electricity for two weeks. Noriega spearheaded the effort to restore power and other services.

This mix of competence and compassion makes Melissa Noriega the Chronicle's recommendation for council member at-large, Position 3.

If you live in the Houston area, remember to vote and/or do whatever you can to get her voters to the polls. Taking back Texas is a long process and tomorrow, we can take another step on that journey.

The Constitutional Amendment and the one School Board Trustee spot? Vote for Guzman, he has signs up around town. lol

I haven't been around much (0.00 / 0)
been kind of cooped up in Jester, so I haven't seen any signs.  After I posted I found out the Chronicle and Statesman both endorsed Guzman and the constitutional amendment, so I'll go with him.  I recall a year and a half ago the chronicle said to vote no on all the constitutional amendments while the Statesman said to vote for 7 out of 9, so if the Chronicle endorses one, you know it's a pretty common sense one to endorse.

voting for Melissa tomorrow.

Not Houston BUT . . . (5.00 / 1)
I made it back in time to my home town of Friendswood (south side of Houston) for our city council elections. Pretty much we have a 4-3 extremist* advantage, 1 of the far right extremists is up tomorrow and 1 of the good guys is having to step down due to term limits.

If you are in Friendswood please vote for:
Leslie Reid place 4
Andy Rivera place 6

this would tip the favor of the council, please vote.

*since coming to their advantage last spring the F-wood council has
1. Tried to eliminate Friendswood's tree ordinance, but passed a much weaker version of what they hoped.
2. Successfully eliminated Water Conservation education to grade schools
3. Tried to establish English as the official language only to realize there was backlash to this idea and the bill failed on a council vote of 2-5
