Another D in the TX-10

by: Matt Glazer

Thu May 03, 2007 at 05:40 PM CDT

There will be a primary in the 10th Congressional District.

Yesterday we announced Dan Grant's entry into the race.  Today, Larry Joe Doherty has filed the necessary paperwork to force a democratic primary.

LJD, as we will likely refer to him, is not at the same level as Grant or Ankrum.  He is an actor, poet, singer, attorney, husband, father, outdoorsman, wildlife advocate, and classic car. At least that is what his bio says.

If you contact LJD, you can talk to him about public speaking, voice over work, merchandise, or other items of interest.  If you need to talk to him about his campaign, I would suggest either public speaking or other.

In either case, Houston, Austin, and everywhere in between, get ready for a primary (kind of).

Sticking with Grant (0.00 / 0)
It sounds to me like Mr. Doherty's idea of a political campaign is a bit like Kinky Friedman's — a marketing opportunity.  No thanks.  I'll stick with Grant.

I've met Dan, and as he is a fellow Austinite, he is ahead of Mr. Doherty in my book, but in reading the things Doherty posts to the CD10 list, he seems like a good guy. I wouldn't just dismiss him. And - he'd be a much, much better representative than what we have now. So would Dan. We've got plenty of time until the primary to get to know them both. Now, what was that date again? ; )

According to the link (5.00 / 2)
Larry Joe filed on April 26, not today.

I've met both candidates, and I expect to have a serious primary between the two (and any others who may file before the eventual deadline).

I'm not saying that you shouldn't form an opinion, just that you should not write off any potential candidate this early in the game.

Larry Joe has some name recognition that the other candidates don't/didn't.  I don't know if that will help or harm, but it cannot be discounted.

Hell, I'm just excited to have challengers at all.  After Ted decided against running, I was worried we wouldn't field anybody.  I want to take this seat back so badly I can taste it.

Comparing candidates in CD10 (4.33 / 3)
Both Dan Grant and Larry Joe Doherty are very qualified candidates.  Both are intelligent, articulate, dedicated, and have a ton of energy.  Larry Joe is older, has extensive experience in Texas politics, is more flamboyant, and has better connections on the Houston end of the district.  Dan is younger, has a compelling foreign policy resume (Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo), and has lots of connections in Travis County.

Neither one of them has really found his voice yet, or crafted an effective theme for the campaign.  They both have trouble articulating why they want to represent this district.

That's temporary, and I'm not too worried about either of them.  As Ted Ankrum and I can attest, there is a learning curve to being a candidate.  As time goes on, you find ways to express what you really believe in ways that resonate with voters.  In the end, we will have a very strong nominee going up against Michael McCaul.

The TrueBlue10.org group is staying neutral for now.  We are offering advice and logistical help to both candidates, so they can get their campaigns off the ground.  We are encouraging everybody to get to know both candidates, and to offer all the help they can to the candidate of their choice.

If one of them takes off and the other starts to fizzle, we'll encourage the second guy to drop out.  Both Larry Joe and Dan are committed to unseating McCaul, and will not stand in the way of a manifestly better candidate.  Both have pledged to run a clean and positive primary campaign.

Let's see how they do!

Haha, Larry Joe Doherty is the judge host of the courtroom show Texas Justice.  Perhaps his name recognition will help him.
