Blogging Judge Headed for a Supreme Court Bid?

by: Texas Nate

(A blogger being recruited to run? Love it. - promoted by Matt Glazer)

I'm hearing rumors that blogging Judge Susan Criss -- author of As The Island Floats -- is being recruited to run for Texas Supreme Court.

That's really exciting news. Imagine a state wide candidate with major backing who's also intimately familiar with blogging as a way to communicate directly to the public.

Here's my favorite anecdote from Judge Criss' blog, by way of Grits for Breakfast (where she got her start as a guest blogger):

I brought over a defendant this week who had notified the Court that he was having a problem with his lawyer. When I asked him why he was upset with his lawyer the defendant stood and said, "Judge, he's not lying for me.. he's lying to me."

Sometimes keeping a straight face on while on the bench is challenging. A bit more questioning revealed that the lawyer had not lied to the defendant. He had procrastinated about communicating with his client when plea bargain negoitioations came to an impasse. Lawyers sometimes avoid going to see their clients in jail when there is no good news to report. That only causes more anxiety for both the lawyer and defendant in the long run.

Anyone else heard that she might be running statewide?

I've pasted her bio in the extended entry.

Here's her bio from her re-election site:

Judge Susan Criss was elected to the 212th District Court of Galveston  County, Texas in 1998. The 212th District Court is a trial court that handles  both felony criminal and civil cases.

Judge Criss is the Director for District 11 for the National Association of  Women Judges (N.A.W.J.) covering Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma. She is the  Project Director of the Color of Justice Video Project for Texas. Judge Criss   had a video created featuring Texas minority judges, lawyers, and law students  who encourage minority children to pursue careers in the law and the judiciary.   She has also participated on the N.A.W.J. Committee on Racial, Ethnic, and  Sexual Orientation Discrimination. Judge Criss joined the National Association  of Women Judges in 2001.

Judge Criss serves as the chairperson of the Gulf Coast MHMR Task Force on  Jail Diversion for the Mentally Ill. That task force is dedicated to pursuing  treatment for the mentally ill and diverting them from the criminal justice  system.

Shortly after coming on the bench Judge Criss set up the first court web site  in Galveston County at www.co.galveston.tx.us/judgecriss.  The  web site includes a section called Court Class for Kids. This  section teaches children about what happens in court and what to do if they  become witnesses.

Judge Criss launched a program to provide Spanish speaking probationers in  her court with written translations of probation terms, conditions and  rules.

I just heard (4.00 / 2)
She's looking at challenging Phil Johnson

My comments reflect my own personal opinion and not those of any client or colleague, current, former or future.

Well if so that would be cool. (0.00 / 0)
I had a chance to meet Judge Chris at Mikal Watts' fundraiser which she attended with her father Lloyd Chris who is on the SDEC from Galveston. (my most SINCERE apologies in my earlier comment for getting my wires crossed and getting my generations mixed). She's a really suburb individual and someone with the type of connections to make a credible statewide run of it if she choose. Of course, this is all just off of what Nate posted here so I have no idea as to any intentions, but that would be a very exciting race.

Oh, don't apologize!  I enjoyed the mix-up more than you could possibly imagine and I'm not likely to let her forget it for a very long time! ha!

When your initials are S.C., you can only assume God had a plan!  On to the Supreme Court!  She's got my vote!!!!

in Judge Criss's court.  I have to be careful because I have an active case in there.  Fair, no bs.

That's great news. (5.00 / 1)
Anyone interested in knowing why Judge Johnson needs to be replaced ought to read his sour grapes opinion in the case called Dew vs Crown Derrick. Source: http://www.houston-opinions.com/Tex-Medina.html A rig worker named Paul Dew died when he fell through a hole in an offshore drilling rig. Crown Derrick built the rig but did not follow the rig's design plans and left this hole open. The jury found against Crown Derrick. Even the far right-wing Judges on the Texas Supreme Court agreed that Dew's family proved their case, but this was not good enough for Judge Johnson. Johnson wrote a sepatate opinion just to say thet he would have completely ignored the binding cases that came before the Dew family's case in order to rule in favor of Crown Derrick. Any judge who is so far right-wing that he falls to the right of the other far right-wing judges on the Texas Supreme Court has no business serving on the court. For the safety of working men and women of Texas, Judge Johnson has got to go. Run, Judge Criss, run!

Go get em' Sue (0.00 / 0)
I am proud to say that Susan Criss is my Aunt. She has been a role model of mine for many years. Her ability to lead and communicate with members of Galveston County during her time as Judge of the 212 has been remarkable. I have recently concluded my final year of college baseball eligibility and am now looking forward to doing my best to represent my last name as well as Susan has. Go get em' Sue!
