| Rep. Joaquin Castro:We also heard a lot about fiscal notes. We're passing this bill despite the fact that it has a fiscal note. We defeated amendments because they had fiscal notes. And although money is one way to measure loss, and a very popular one, it's not the only way. And I can't help but think that there is a democracy note here, and that the democracy cost here is even more than the fiscal cost to our state.
Rep. Mark Veasey:But back during the '60s the black ministers and everyone else that marched for freedom, that marched for voting rights, rarely did any of the white pastors from the South join in, and the fact that the Baptist General Convention joined in shows that we are making some progress in this country on racial harmony.
Rep. Rafael Anchia:So ladies and gentlemen, you have a pig on your hands. It's an ugly bill. It creates more of an opportunity for voter fraud than current law...
Rep. Dawnna Dukes: Call it what you want, but I know Jim Crow when I see him. HB 218 has nothing to do with protecting the vote and has everything to do with suppressing the vote. Since they cannot bring back the poll tax, they are coming at us from a different angle.
Rep. Lon Burnam: Racism is racism. Xenophobia is xenophobia. It's too bad we have to see it on the House floor again. |
