Sly Turner: Glutton for Punishment

by: Jose Blasquez

Mon Apr 02, 2007 at 09:18 PM CDT

Speaker Pro Tempore Sylvester Turner is looking more and more like this session's Charlie Brown.  Getting oh so close to kicking that football only to have Republicans pull it away at the last minute.

Turner, foiled again on a point of order by Republican Robert Talton, has yet to pass either one of his primary (election) protection bills, which would partially restore CHIP and the System Benefit fund.  Craddick is laying his Speaker Pro Tempore out to dry- begging for the a Dem to go after Turner come February/March.

But then again, what should any Democratic State Representative expect from a House led by Speaker Craddick?  Craddick upheld an obscure point of order, proving once again that party trumps loyalty so long as he is holding the gavel.

The final test, however, will come tomorrow when Turner's CHIP bill is finally re-heard.  Will Talton kill it with a third point of order, and if so, will he officially become Turner's nemesis?  Will Turner allow unfriendly amendment after unfriendly amendment to gut his bill, or will he withdraw it if that happens?  Will his political survival trump good public policy?

Who knows, but don't be surprised if you hear the words "good grief" come from the House chambers tomorrow.

Remember people, selling out to Tom Craddick gets you NOTHING.

Craddick doesn't care about his own Republican members, so it really shouldn't come as a shock to anyone that he won't help or protect his Democratic shills.

Bookmark this post everybody -- and get ready to pull it up during the primaries when the Craddick D's are telling everyone about all the great schwag they got in exchange for selling out.

/What's the over/under on how how long it takes Colin to get on this thread in a pitiful attempt to defend his bosses?

point of order was just a slap at Turner and Craddick... (0.00 / 0)

and it doesn' stop people from receiving the benefits of the System Benefit Fund.

I posted this over at Capitol Annex not too long ago...

Poor people are not affected by the point of order. Turner had $170 million included in the House budget to pay for this program, but apparently, he also wanted to set the money off limits for future legislatures, which was the purpose of this legislation and which made it liable to a point of order. Assuming the Senate doesn't strip the program from the House budget, poor people will still get a break on their electric bills.

What about the scumbag Talton?? (0.00 / 0)
Why do you go after Turner and give Talton a pass?  Talton is the one attacking poor kids and seniors.

The questions from your last post that was exactly like this one remain...is there anyone in his district we can help beat Talton????

It's because Talton's a Republican.  I don't expect a thing from him.

I expect better from our side.

Turner and six more of his Craddick D friends could've changed the equation on January 9.  They didn't.

Now look what he gets for his troubles.

I see your point, but WHAT ABOUT TALTON?? (0.00 / 0)
Talton supported Pitts.  The underlying message you seem to be delivering is that Pitts could have kept Talton from raising these points of order.

I just don't buy that.  As I pulled from highly reputable statewide newspaper accounts, Talton is wholeheartedly (assuming he has a heart) opposed to the very concept of CHIP.

I don't see how Pitts could have changed his mind.

Good grief is right (0.00 / 0)
This whole thing is extremely frustrating, but I don't think it's as simple as attacking Turner for supporting Craddick.  It's an understandable strategy, in my opinion... unfortunately, it seems to have been a very ill-conceived and ill-fated strategy.
