Taking back the Texas 10th District - TrueBlue 10

by: BeckyH

Mon Mar 26, 2007 at 10:21 AM CDT

(Sounds like the perfect type of project that an ActBlue nominee fund could be useful for. What a great project! - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

Shortly after last November's election, while many people were celebrating the great Democratic victory, a group of people in Texas decided that we wanted a victory ourselves. The candidate for the 10th Congressional District, Ted Ankrum, was a first-time candidate and had little money ($65,000 altogether) but still managed to hold incumbent Michael McCaul, the son in law of the guy who owned Clear Channel, to 55% of the vote. That's the smallest victory margin of any surviving GOP congressman in Texas.

If Ted Ankrum could come so close, coming from nowhere with little help, then a candidate that starts early with the support of a core group of volunteers can win in 2008. The next Democratic nominee should not have to start from scratch.

We formed a group we call TrueBlue 10. Our goal is to organize this gerrymandered district & wrest control of it in the next election. We decided to organize the district, not as a candidate committee. We are willing to look at any Democrat who is seriously interested in running.

The Tenth Congressional District was LBJ's, then it was Jake Pickle's, then it was Lloyd Doggett's. It was a proud, liberal, Central Texas district. It has been re-drawn and, as you would expect a district drawn up by Tom DeLay's cronies, crazily shaped. It has two big population centers at either end, with a narrow swath of rural Texas connecting them. (Picture a misshapen barbell.) If there are two areas of Texas with less in common than the very conservative north part of Houston/Harris County and hippie liberal central Austin that got glommed together in this district, I don't know what they'd be. And the areas in between - what do Brenham and Bastrop have in common? Who knows? But we have residents in all areas of this district in our e-mail group, organizing so that we'll have a better chance in 2008. And yes, we would also like to take back the Texas House & undo this horribly-drawn map - you know, actually have districts that make some sense. But this is something more immediate we can do. Michael McCaul has a horrible voting record (see my diary from back in July, "Top Ten Bad Things About Michael McCaul" http://www.dailykos.... ) and, a voter who will vote for whoever is McCaul's opponent can probably be persuaded to vote for the Democratic candidate for the state house, too.

We have monthly meetings and a Google group, and only members can view the
messages, because we are discussing strategy and organization.  But if you are in that district, and want to get in on this, go to the page linked below & click on "apply for membership"

http://groups.google...

We can accept contributions and spend them on general organizing, but not on advocating the election of a specific candidate -- that's the job of the candidate's campaign committee. More information will appear on our not-yet-ready website: TrueBlue10.org

So that's what we're doing about the 2008 election, how about you?

is anyone considering (3.00 / 1)
this race besides Ted Ankrum? He would be a great candidate once more, I am just interested to hear about any activity.

at the CAD meeting last week (0.00 / 0)
There was a guy. He said he'll be getting stuff together by the end of the month. He's the only one I know of so far.

Ted has said he won't run again, which makes me very sad. I like Ted a lot, and he would have been such a good congressman....

Do you recall his name? (3.00 / 1)
When did Ted decide he was not going to run? I thought I recently saw something on the TCDP calendar that he was having a meeting of supporters to discuss 2008.

[ Parent ]
sent him an e-mail (0.00 / 0)
I bet he'll be introducing himself soon, but I figure anyone thinking of running for an office should get to do that for themselves.

Ted told the CD10 group that he doesn't want to run, maybe 2 weeks ago. It was pretty recent. Made me very sad. Like I said in my DK post, I'm geeky enough that his former employment at NASA was a major plus for me. Then I started really reading his stuff. Such a smart man.

do you think you could send me an email with the name?

He is working on his own diary (0.00 / 0)
He says he'll introduce himself around soon. I don't want to steal anybody's thunder.

Women Candidate (3.00 / 1)
Annie's List held a "Candidate's School" this past Saturday in Houston and plans on promoting women candidates in Texas.  Maybe you could get with them to find a viable person to run.

That would be a great idea. (0.00 / 0)
Though EMILY's List record wasnt very good in 06, they are a great resource.

Opening offices in Houston and Austin (3.00 / 1)
Very good resource for women running and they are planning on opening offices here in Houston and I believe in Austin, if they haven't already.  These are paid staffers not volunteers!

There is a good chance I'll help (3.00 / 1)
95 percent that I'll end up at the University of Texas next year, and I'll probably be spending a lot of time in CD10; even if for no other reason than to help my Smithville grandfather on his ranch and visit the rest of my Bastrop county (very Republican) family.  ..

McCaul's record wil help convert them (0.00 / 0)
check out the link in the post to my 10 bad things about him. Especially these 2:

7. Opposed expanding access to the military's health insurance program to members of the National Guard and Reserves, even though 20 percent of all Reservists do not have health insurance, and 40 percent of Reservists aged 19 to 35 lack health coverage. I guess it's ok that people get yanked from their jobs and sent over to fight a war that didn't need to be, but if they ask for healthcare, they're whiners?

And

6. Voted for emergency appropriations for the war so the money train to Halliburton didn't stop, despite the Pentagon auditing process finding that $100 million of their costs were "unreasonable". They could find money for their contractor friends but not for healthcare for reservists?

McCaul...don't get me started (5.00 / 1)
McCaul's constituent services are for shite.

I mean, for crying out loud! I got a letter via snail mail today from the Governor's office in response to an e-mail. From Rick "Crony" Perry!!

And Doggett will send you stuff even if you aren't in his district.

From Mike? I get nothin'. Even Cornylio and Kaybee have sent me stuff.

McCaul...well...he's worthless. Even if he does support public radio. (Yeah. I'll bet he does. Clear Channel Son in Law that he is.)

McCaul. Worth less than a dead armadillo.

that's #10 in my DK diary (0.00 / 0)

We need more like you on board! (3.00 / 1)
One of the problems we kept running up against in "06" was that we couldn't find enough people for block walking, etc.  We need more young Democrats involved at every level.  Glad to hear you will be on board with the CD10 race.

Sorry! (0.00 / 0)

We could use another blogger around these parts that is actually a UT student you know. :)

Two Candidates! (3.00 / 1)
Wow, it seems we not only have one candidate going for the CD10 position but two.  This feels like "06"!  Get involved with the CD10 group at yahoo and get one of these guys elected...
