Tarrant County Republicans Stand Against the Troops

by: Todd Hill

Wed Mar 21, 2007 at 02:54 PM CDT

As Vince pointed out, Texas congressional Republicans, many of who have never wore a military uniform, talk a good game on taking care of our troops but voting records and otherwise indicate how congressional Republicans only care about their political livelihood, accepting donations from companies profiting of the war, and voting to continue to demoralize and destroy our active military and their families.

Kay Granger (R-Fort Worth), Kenny Marchant (R-Coppell), Michael Burgess (R-Flower Mound),  and Joe Barton (R-Ennis), all of who represent portions of Tarrant County, have consistently contributed to the mirage of administration rhetoric about national defense and troop care, only to have their voting records demonstrate how much they don't care about the wellbeing of America's most precious military treasure.

With over 160,000 active Texas service-members, and over 23,000 Texas National Guard members in Iraq, coupled with military bases and defense companies too, the argument can be made that the Lone Star State makes a huge contribution to national defense.  Logically that would indicate a higher moral obligation amongst our congressional delegation to do what is right for our troops.  Point in fact, neither of the Tarrant delegation, minus Burgess because Dick Armey was still in office, asked the necessary questions or demanded oversight in the entire ramp up to the war, the execution of it, and the debacle after initial combat operations.  They put blind faith ahead of what was right for the country.

All of the Tarrant County Republican delegation stands with President Bush in sending men and women into combat without proper equipment and training, coupled with the proper amount of rest between multiple deployments into these war zones.  They are against applying goals and benchmarks, as recommended by the bi-partisan Iraqi Study Group, that the Iraqi government must reach in order to wean away a culture of dependency by the Malaki government.  They instead promote an open-ended commitment of more servicemen and women to combat without a real strategy for success in Iraq.

Considering over 2200 of the roughly estimated 24,000 wounded soldiers hail from Texas, each representative failed to do their part while in the majority to utilize foresight and ensure adequate appropriation for health care was granted for returning wounded war veterans.  Their unwavering support for President Bush would indicate they likely also support the reductions in veteran care for the proposed 2008 budget too.

Moreover, as Vince noted, all have expressed their intention to vote against the impending Iraq War supplemental spending bill, highlighting how each lean on rhetoric to act tough, but when push comes to shove will leave soldiers and their families out to dry every time.  Now who is "slow bleeding" our troops? These Republican troop haters have already voted against extending access to TRICARE health coverage for National Guard members and their families, and voted against combat bonuses for our overburdened military families.

The bottom line is that the artificial claim that Republicans have on being tough on defense, and caring for our soldiers, is all fictional rhetoric in an attempt to show "compassionate conservatism" politics.  It is pandering for self-political gain.  They've demonstrated time again the only thing important to them is maintaining absolute power at all costs, including our national defense, and profiteering from war.  As another congressional election year approaches, any candidates in Tarrant County wishing to take on these troop haters should be prepared to expose these Republican chicken hawks as the political panderers that they truly are.

Simply-
This leftist retoric is tired and boring.

Articles such as this have a more damaging effect than all of the "Terrorists" combined.

Know that a significant percentage of the true Americans believe your point of view is that of a supercilious adolescent.

Try something else for a while-)

So tired and boring... (0.00 / 0)
you felt the need to comment.  Interesting.

Not to mention, you address nothing the blog had to say.  I guess you were just so tired and bored you just had to write something?

As far as "significant percentage of true Americans" believing another point of view is bologne.  Considering a sweep of the House ejected rubber-stamp Republicans, and individuals like George "Macaca" Allen were blistered in the '06 elections, I would say a significant amount of Americans believe it is time to bring our men and women home.  Click here for more.  Oh, and click here too for good measure.

Now exactly how can you see with those rose-colored glasses on?

"Republican troop haters??" (0.00 / 0)
And remind me of Dick Durbin's comment on the Senate floor about troops being torturers?

Remind me of how it took Mother Sheehan to travel to Venezuela to stand with Hugo Chavez to condemn the Iraq War?

If anyone's supporting the troops, it's not the Pelosi/Reid/Sanders side. After all, what do you call it when you tie a bunch of bungee cords onto a bill that puts money behind executing a war, without a bunch of phony benchmarks that anti-war lefties throw in there?

Most people aren't stupid, Todd. There's a device called a "poison pill" that a legislator will put into a bill to kill it. It's a political tactic, and you know it.

If you'd actually read into the context and motivation to the benchmark tie in, then maybe you could write a truthful blog, er, article about it for the first time.

Supporting the Troops (5.00 / 1)
Tom Delay admitted yesterday on NPR's Morning Edition that Chris Smith R-NJ was removed as Chair of the Veteran Affairs Committee and then removed from the committee because he requested more funding for Veterans' health care.  In spite of the current scandal at Walter Reed and other VA Hospitals, DeLay stands by that decision.  That's what I call "Supporting the Troops!"

Since you asked ... (5.00 / 1)
Oh, I know these ... pick me.

And remind me of Dick Durbin's comment on the Senate floor about troops being torturers?

Actually, Durbin NEVER commented on the troops being torturers.  He said that Guantanamo Bay sounded like Russian Gulags and Nazi Concentration Camps.  He did NOT say that all or most or even a significant number of troops were tortures.  In fact, he didn't even use the term "troops" or "soldiers".  He just said "Americans".  Durbin's comments, though strong, were on indecent conditions in a prison, and said nothing about his or anyone else's support for the troops.  Most smart honest people realize this, and that's why you didn't hear anyone from the brass responding to Durbin.  The screeching was almost entirely rightwing noise.

Remind me of how it took Mother Sheehan to travel to Venezuela to stand with Hugo Chavez to condemn the Iraq War?

Though I didn't think much of Sheehan hanging out with Chavez, she doesn't write foreign policy, and this says nothing about whether she supports the troops.  But, to imply that her actions somehow justify someone doubting whether the antiwar left supports the troops is deeply dishonest.

After these first two questions, I really hope you don't question someone's integrity at the end of your post.

After all, what do you call it when you tie a bunch of bungee cords onto a bill that puts money behind executing a war, without a bunch of phony benchmarks that anti-war lefties throw in there?

A poorly executed war without combat ready troops is prescription for their own death, so requiring benchmarks and basic military readiness is vast improvement over the current situation.

Shorter sfagrad02: But ... but ... Dick's comments and Cindy's Hugo hug prove that the antiwar left hates the troops.

This is the most dishonest arguement in American politics.

If you'd actually read into the context and motivation to the benchmark tie in, then maybe you could write a truthful blog, er, article about it for the first time.

Oh crap!

So when someone calls Durbin to the carpet for his comments on the floor and feels insulted on behalf of the troops, they're simply a right winger out to get Durbin? Oh, please. Not anywhere in that speech did Durbin compliment or defend the troops. Only people who were defended were the terrorists who were kept in the camp.

"Though I didn't think much of Sheehan hanging out with Chavez, she doesn't write foreign policy, and this says nothing about whether she supports the troops.  But, to imply that her actions somehow justify someone doubting whether the antiwar left supports the troops is deeply dishonest."

You have got to be kidding me. First off, it's not about "hanging out with Chavez." It's about endorsing him by an appearance. Anytime a notorious American goes overseas and makes a contrary statement, it echoes throughout the world. And as far as writing policy, sometimes the tongue is mightier than the pen. She and her cohorts, a few months ago, hijacked a Democratic press conference and reminded viewers that she helped bring them into Congress. She's the same one who has gained the endorsement of David Duke by claiming that the Iraqi war is being fought on behalf of Israel. Please tell me you don't agree with her on that nutjob view.

"A poorly executed war without combat ready troops is prescription for their own death, so requiring benchmarks and basic military readiness is vast improvement over the current situation."

You really don't see the purpose of the so-called "benchmarks," do you? These restrictions are being placed on the military, you know- the organization that the libs claim they support? When you have your hands tied down by more regulations, how much harder can they make it to go about your job? Then again, libs love regulating everything they can get their hands on, while waving their hands like illusionists and masquerading them as "benchmarks." With their supporters having recently defaced the Capitol building, a congressman's office and a military recruiting office, it is nearly impossible to convince me that libs actually want the military to succeed.

"Shorter sfagrad02: But ... but ... Dick's comments and Cindy's Hugo hug prove that the antiwar left hates the troops."

Not once did I say anything about anyone hating the troops. No need to put words in my mouth while drinking the Kool-Aid. But their actions and hidden motives- that the mainstream media won't even touch- bring any possibility of honest, genuine support of our military into question.

Two Sentences That Should Never Be Said Together (5.00 / 1)
No need to put words in my mouth while drinking the Kool-Aid. But their actions and hidden motives- that the mainstream media won't even touch- bring any possibility of honest, genuine support of our military into question.

No honest or thinking person would say those two sentences together.  Your first sentence attacks me for assigning motive, while your second assigns motive to Democrats.

Unbelievable.

Moreover, you said: If anyone's supporting the troops, it's not the Pelosi/Reid/Sanders side.  You even said this immediately bringing up Durbin and Sheehan.  So, I interpreted this as though you were using their actions to justify your claim that the left does not support the troops.

That's basic reading comprehension, not putting words in your mouth or drinking Kool Aid.  If you'd prefer my not using the word "hate", I'll revise:

Shorter sfagrad02: But ... but ... Dick's comments and Cindy's Hugo hug prove that the antiwar left does not support the troops.

Huh? (0.00 / 0)
Please tell me what "assigning motive" and stretching to paraphrase someone's words have in common? I'd sure like to know.

With comments made against the troops (as you deny) and mountains of regulations being proposed on them, how can you justify that such actions support the troops?

And I'd like to know how supporting troops is equal to condemning them. And how is standing side by side with an adversary to our country who condemns us supportive of our country? Please, explain this new brand of logic to me.

In regards to Sheehan, she has been asked point blank in interview after interview whether or not she wants us to win in any war- she could not give a straight answer. Don't the fringe libs dog the other side on such a response?

Gotta love that <==== ward hypocrisy.

Unsubstantied Argument (5.00 / 1)
To make myself perhaps more clearly understood, I'm going to try to make this a little more civil.  I'm also going to supply two definitions:

Support: to promote the interests of.
Troops: the soldiers in the entire U.S. military.

Please tell me what "assigning motive" and stretching to paraphrase someone's words have in common?

Paraphrasing someone's words is assigning a short summary of ones comments. Assigning motivate to someone is assigning a short summary of what someone is thiking in one's brain.  Though they are not exactly the same, they both provide short summaries of someone else's positions, so they have a lot in common.

With comments made against the troops (as you deny) and mountains of regulations being proposed on them, how can you justify that such actions support the troops?

You're correct, no comments were made against the soldiers in the entire U.S. military, so I am denying them.  The burden of proof that comments were made against the the soldiers in the entire U.S. military is on you.  (I'll talk more about this later). Plus, said regulations are requiring the the soldiers in the U.S. military to be combat ready, getting better protective armor, ensuring that the military is meeting milestones, etc.  As mentioned in my first post, I believe that these regulations are in the interests of the soldiers in the entire U.S. military.

And I'd like to know how supporting troops is equal to condemning them.

I've expained this already.  No one condemned the soldiers in the entire U.S. military.  Not Durbin.  Not Sheehan.  Not anyone on the left or right to my knowledge.  And again, the burden of proof is on you to show that such condemnations were made.  (1) Supply the exact quotes.  (2) Define the interests of the soldiers in the entire U.S. military that their speakers are against.  (3) Demonstrate that the soldiers in the entire U.S. military are indeed interested in these interests.  (4) Show that the were indeed against these interests.  Anything short of (1)--(4) will not satisfy your burden.

And how is standing side by side with an adversary to our country who condemns us supportive of our country?

This is not a complete sentence, so it's hard to answer it.  As you you can read in my earlier post, I was against her standing side by side with Chavez.  But, again her actions, didn't say anything about her promotion of the interests of the soldiers on the U.S. military, nor do they say anything about the antiwar left's promotion of the interests of the soldiers on the U.S. military.  And again the burden of proof is on you, so you need to take steps (1)-(4).

Here's how I read your argument:

Thesis statement: The left does NOT promote of the interests of the soldiers on the U.S. military.

Supporting Evidence:
1) Durbin's comments
2) Sheehan's actions
3) Regulating the war

My original reponse was that your argument is "dishonest".  But to be more civil, I'll assume that you are genuine in your claims and modify this to "unsubstantiated".  Until you provide steps (1)-(4), none of your evidence proves that the left does not promote the interests of the soldiers in the U.S. military.  In fact, here's an article summarizing the interests of the soldiers in the U.S. military.

We've now rehashed this several times, so unless you can back up your claims, I'm done here.
