HD-106 Election Results LiveBlog

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Tue Feb 28, 2006 at 07:07 PM CST

Here we go, LiveBlog tonight (syndicated at dkos and mydd as needed).

Let's see how the numbers pan out:
Dallas County Election site. SOS website will have numbers, too. If you'd like to see a map of the district with precinct numbers, check this one out in pdf format.

Early Vote In with 3.6% turnout of 67,620 eligible voters.

(D) Katy Hubener 960  39.39%
(L) Gene Freeman 18  0.74%
(R) Kirk England 1,459  59.87%

(-) TOTAL  2,437  100.00%

8:54: No new numbers, but I called Byron in Dallas and he said Katy had over 100 people on the ground today and there was no Republican groundwork to be seen. They are waiting just like us down here.

Phil's update: I'll second that. I talked to some of the volunteers. They said they knocked on every door in their universe today, over the weekend, and made every call at least once. Everything that could have been done on the ground was done.

9:20 From Ken Molberg on the ground in Dallas...

Returns in from all but one precinct.  I show us down by just under 400 votes, subject to correction.

And I need to add that this is a tought district for many reasons.  What this tells me, however, is that we can win it in November.

Everyone who worked this was tremendous.

If that's true, that means Katy did win the Election Day votes as it would narrow her margain. No actual numbers as of yet.

9:30 Final Results

(D) Katy Hubener  2,438  46.23%
(L) Gene Freeman 48  0.91%
(R) Kirk England  2,788  52.86%
(-) TOTAL  5,274  100.00%

Katy actually won the Election Day vote 1478 to 1328.  Congrats to everyone who helped on the ground, we will win this in November!  (There are report of 55 mail ballots still to be counted, but it's not enough to close the margin.)

Today's the day where we all see if Democrats can go two for two. Katy Hubener vs. Kirk "Empty-Nest" England in the Special Election for HD 106. Anyone who wants a last minute review about the race, read here:

Last Cycle Results (0.00 / 0)
By way of reference, these are the numbers from last cycle:

STATE REPRESENTATIVE DISTRICT 106
ALLEN, RAY  18,828  52.6%  52.6%
HUBENER, KATY  16,987  47.4%  47.4%

She's got a way to go to beat her percentage last time. Of course, keep in mind, if things don't go our way tonight, there's still November; expect turnout to be fairly low in this special.

The Turnout Problem... (0.00 / 0)
Last election they had the Martin Frost people running field.  This time, who knows.  Obviously the early vote is discouraging, but if her GOTV program was strong, she only has to make up 500 votes.

EV (0.00 / 0)
Any idea what the EV totals were last time?

Wow (0.00 / 0)
So is anyone else as bored as I am waiting for Dallas?

What are you doing in the meantime?

Laughing at the amount of money (0.00 / 0)
the Texans for Lawsuit Reform spent on Frank Madla's campaign in February.

Seriously, go check it out for yourself.  They basically just bankrolled his campaign.

Scrubs (0.00 / 0)
Watching Scrubs. J.D. just told Eliott (sp?) that he liked Grey's Anatomy b/c "it's like they were watching our lives, and then put it on television."

Burn.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

Wondering why... (0.00 / 0)
Kelly Pickler sucks at singing and still gets props from the American Idol judges...

I mean SERIOUSLY! She is terrible.

Hey, K-T, got a journal at BoomanTribune.com? You ought to crosspost there, too.

Are they having to boat the results across Lake Joe Pool or something?

Vince Leibowitz

[ Parent ]
I don't. (0.00 / 0)
I can only handle so many journals everywhere, and those two are the old standards I'm used to. If you have one... :)

Okey Dokey... (0.00 / 0)
Since I do have one, the results are slow as Christmas, and what not, I'll advance the cause of the Burnt Orange Report Syndicate Newswire.

It is either wait here.... (0.00 / 0)
or watch the girls compete on American Idol...I pick waiting here

OK... (0.00 / 0)
Everything's on electronic machines up there, and the machines total the votes themselves...

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

Oh Damn. (0.00 / 0)
I'm sorry, I've been on the phone with them all this time. I guess that means they can't send them over their dial-up line. Oops. My bad.

Dial Up?! (0.00 / 0)
Huh! I thought they were transcribing the results into bianary code, etching that on stone tablets, and then carrying them by horseback to the County Clerk's Office and by go cart to the SOS.

Early Vote - last time and this time (3.00 / 1)
The last election, the weather was really great all through early vote, and then kinda crappy on election day.  It was just the opposite this time.  All except for a day or two, early vote was rainy or even icy, and today was great.  And of course with this much fewer voters the margin of error is greater.  Just some positive ideas while we wait for the final word.

Vision = Truth to Power

I hope so. (0.00 / 0)
It would have been nicer if it was closer but it's not impossible. We always knew this race would be by a couple points.

Please read the Community Guidelines and How to Rate Comments.

Could be that (0.00 / 0)
there was a lot of people waiting in line to still vote at 7.  Which should bode for well for us.

thejeffersonian.blogspot.com

is it always this slow? (0.00 / 0)
What is up with the wait?  in the past the statewide races would be over by now true?

In Re: The Logo (0.00 / 0)
Ok, so this is totally off-topic (but there are no results, and Boston Legal doesn't start for a few more minutes), but the new logo looks cool. This afternoon, I actually thought it was newly animated with like some yellow sky spots or something moving in and out of the black. Turns out it was sunshine from the window reflecting on my monitor, but it looked cool.

Vince Leibowitz

Really... (0.00 / 0)
Ok. Well, if it is, it doesn't show up on my laptop here in the living room. Maybe it looks better on the desktop. Or, wait...are you kidding me? Or is my eyesight failing as I near 30?

Vince Leibowitz

[ Parent ]
Ok. Thank god. (0.00 / 0)
I was thinking you had to be drunk to see the animation or something, or download a plug-in for Firefox. I'm such a doofus.

Vince Leibowitz

[ Parent ]
Why (0.00 / 0)
does it say "take your ball and go home" when the cursor is over the logo?

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

[ Parent ]
a better question (0.00 / 0)
Is why not?

Far more entertaining than "home".

Ground Game (0.00 / 0)
That may be a bad omen, that the GOP didn't have a ground game.

I know in several races I've been involved in, if the GOP is doing phone polling and it shows a comfortable majority, they literally will shut down a few days before the election. This is one of Jeff Fisher's strategies in particular.

A lot of the GOP that follows his model does the same thing.

In HD-05 last year, Hughes had zero groundgame going into early voting or during.

Vince Leibowitz

Oh man. (0.00 / 0)
Now I'm so bored I'm watching Real Word: Key West.

At least they have the token Gay guy back again. I really missed that in the Austin show.

Please read the Community Guidelines and How to Rate Comments.

The vote (0.00 / 0)
Well, we're not gonna make this one tonight, but it's not for lack of trying.  When it ends, we'll be talking about a few hundred votes.

We'll make it in November, though.

Katy's a great candidate.  We'll just have to wait a little longer.

Ken.... (0.00 / 0)
If you are up there with Byron like I think you are... just let the numbers come in first. You never know.

Please read the Community Guidelines and How to Rate Comments.

Do you have other numbers? (0.00 / 0)
Ken, are you there? Got other numbers?

Of course, England will have the advantage of being the incumbent and the PAC cash that holds.

gotv game plan (0.00 / 0)
That GOTV plan sounds weird.  What benefit does that hold?  Since last minute hit pieces from all sides can turn voters off or on.  Pushing out your base has been a bedrock of all of the Perry type campiagn tactics.  If we know one thing it's that Perry can turn out his base when he wants too. It does not sound like a smart move to sit on any so call lead.  Does it?

It is, it isn't... (0.00 / 0)
They don't stop direct mail. That's planned out to the last minute, except for content, and special pieces.

But, I can tell you from experience: the GOP does not do door-to-door GOTV or phone GOTV if the race is going to be close, and they follow the Leininger/Reese/Fisher/Winning Strategies model.

Just watch and see what Dan Flynn does in HD 2 this time. No opponent will get near him, and he'll have no last-minute door-to-door or phone, I assure you.

Is the voting up there done (0.00 / 0)
by punching chads....Is that why it is taking so long....

Results (0.00 / 0)
The unofficials that I have show us down 350 votes (at 2438 and the opposition at 2788)with all precincts counted and 44 mail ballots uncounted.

Final results are posting now.
