"There is simply no justification for imprisoning innocent children who pose no threat to anyone," said Vanita Gupta, a staff attorney with the ACLU's Racial Justice Program.  "This is an affront to our core values as a nation. We need practical, realistic immigration policy, not draconian methods that are harming vulnerable kids."

[...]

"ICE fails miserably to meet the required standards by placing children at  Hutto," said Barbara Hines, Clinical Professor of Law with the University of  Texas School of Law Immigration Clinic.  "These children, who can safely be  released with their families under reasonable supervision, are basically  imprisoned under conditions that do not meet generally accepted child welfare  and juvenile justice standards. It is truly a disgrace."

The ACLU Challenges Prison-Like Conditions at Hutto Detention Center:

On March 6, the ACLU brought several lawsuits against Michael Chertoff, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), on behalf of 10 children detained at the T. Don Hutto detention facility in Taylor, Texas. The lawsuit contends that the conditions inside Hutto violate numerous provisions of Flores v. Meese, a 1997 court settlement that established minimum standards and conditions for the housing and release of all minors in federal immigration custody.

I encourage everyone to go here to see some more art by the children at TDH, like the flag above, it's heartbreaking stuff, literally.  Also in the side bar there's links to the plaintiff statements, family profiles, and much more.  If you have children just picture yourself in that position with your children and you'll have to get involved.  It's truly shameful this is happening in America.

After reading all of that, then read what Rep. Carter had to say about TDH.  Don't forget to let 'ol John know how you feel about this, him, and his campaign contributor that profits from jailing children.

If you don't live in CD-31 then call you Rep. instead.

I got your back (1.00 / 1)
No innocent child should be incarcerated. It's morally wrong.
